The hydrodynamic theoretical lubrication model of the friction pair between the rotary shaft and the lip seal under the state of full film lubrication was established in this paper. The Reynolds equation was solved by using the finite difference method, and the influence of the viscosity-temperature characteristics of the lubricant was taken into account in the solution process. The distribution of the film thickness and the hydrodynamic pressure in the sealing area was obtained. At the same time, the bench test was carried out and the correctness of the model was verified by comparing the simulation results and test results of reverse pumping rate and friction torque under different rotational speed of the shaft. The microasperity of the lip surface is a necessary condition for achieving the sealing effect. Therefore, the influences of the contact load of the seal and the root mean square deviation of the lip surface on the sealing performance and frictional property were analyzed by using the theoretical model. The analysis results show that the sealing performance and frictional property can be changed by changing the contact load and surface roughness of the lip, but a single increase in the influence of a certain factor cannot achieve good results, and comprehensive consideration is required in product design.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the pumping efficiency of oil seals with different surface textures at different speeds, and the influence of the rotation direction of triangular texture on the sealing performance was further analyzed. Design/methodology/approach Based on the theory of elastohydrodynamic lubrication and the pumping mechanism of rotary shaft seals, establishing a numerical model of mixed lubrication in oil seal sealing area. The model is coupled with the lip surface texture parameters and the two-dimensional average Reynolds equation considering the surface roughness. Findings The results show that the application of lip surface texture technology has obvious influence on the oil film thickness, friction torque and pumping rate of oil seal. The triangular texture has the most significant effect on the increase of pump suction rate. When the rotation direction of triangular texture is 315 degrees, the pumping rate of oil seal is the largest compared with the other seven directions. Originality/value The model has a comprehensive theoretical guidance for the design of new oil seal products, which provides a certain basis for the application of surface texture technology in the field of sealing in the future. This project has been initiated in order to get a general basic understanding about the influence of additives onto elastomeric lip seal systems. It is necessary to determine the behavior with single additive base oil compounds. Two different synthetic base oils, Polyglycol (PG) and Polyalphaolefin (PAO), are used. Thus 19 different single additive base oil compounds have been reviewed. Two different elastomeric materials NBR and FPM have been taken for all the tests. In several dynamic tests the influences on the sealing systems have been investigated. These included tests for 24 hours to measure the friction torque and tests for 10 hours to measure the pumping rate. Furthermore, the operating conditions during 96 hours functional tests have been determined. A concluding view onto the compatibility, respectively the incompatibility, of the additives in these different points of view will be given.

Based upon EHD theory, the sealing performance of a rotary shaft helix lip seal has been analyzed numerically using a complete hydrodynamic lubrication model. In order to verify the analytical method, several experiments are carried out under different operating conditions. After verification by the experimental results, the analytical method is used to calculate the sealing limit and the optimum seal radial load. The effects of the boundary pressure of sump side upon the pumping rate of a seal are discussed.

Theoretical analysis, combined with experimental verification, is used to study the effect of wear on the performance of a rotary lip seal as characterized by the pumping rate and friction torque. The performance of a rotary lip seal is determined by the sealing lip surface microscopic characteristics and contact characteristics at the sealing zone. The variation of the contact characteristics with wear has been established based on the variation of the sealing lip profiles measured by using a trilinear coordinate measuring instrument. The impression method is used to copy the lip surface microtopography at different wear times and then an optical interferometer is used to measure the impression surface microtopography to obtain the variation of roughness with wear. The variations of the roughness, contact characteristics, and approximate contact temperature with wear are inserted into a mixed lubrication model to obtain the variations of the pumping rate and friction torque. A comparison of the simulated results with those from experimental measurement verifies the validity of the theoretical analysis.

A magnetorheological fluid (MRF) is one of many smart materials that can be changed their rheological properties. The stiffness and damping characteristics of MRF can be changed when a magnetic field is applied. This technology has been successfully employed in various low and high volume applications, such as dampers, clutches, and active bearings, which are already in the market or are approaching production. As a result, the sealing performance of MRF has become increasingly important. In this study, the wear properties of seals with MRFs were evaluated by a rotary-type lip seal wear tester. The test was performed with and without a magnetic field. The leakage time was monitored during the tests in typical engine oil conditions. The results showed that the wear resistance of the seal with MRF was decreased under the magnetic field.

Clutch disengaging dynamic characteristics, including the disengaging duration and the variations of friction pair gaps and friction torque, are crucial to the shifting control of an automatic transmission. In the present paper, the influence of lubrication oil (ATF) temperature on disengaging dynamic characteristics is investigated through a comprehensive numerical model for the clutch disengaging process, which considers the hydrodynamic lubrication, the asperity contact, the heat transfer, the spline resistance, and the impact between the piston and clutch hub. Moreover, the non-uniformity coefficient (NUC) is proposed to characterize the disengaging uniformity of friction pairs. As the ATF temperature increases from 60 °C to 140 °C, the clutch disengaging duration shortens remarkably (shortened by 55.1%); besides, the NUC sees a decreasing trend before a slight increase. When the ATF temperature is 80 °C, the distribution of friction pair gaps is most uniform. During the disengaging process, the increase of ATF temperature not only accelerates the change of the lubrication status between friction pairs but also contributes to the decrease of contact torque and hydrodynamic torque. This research demonstrates for the first time, evidence for clutch disengaging dynamic characteristics with the consideration of ATF temperature.

The flow field in the lubricating film of a rotary lip seal is analyzed numerically by solving the Reynolds equation with flow factors. The behavior of such a flow field is dominated by the asperities on the lip surface. Since previous analyses treated those asperities deterministically, they required very large computation times. The present approach is much less computationally intensive because the asperities are treated statistically. Since cavitation and asperity orientation play important roles, these are taken into account in the computation of the flow factors. Results of the analysis show how the operating parameters of the seal and the characteristics of the asperities affect such seal characteristics as the pressure distribution in the film, the pumping rate and the load support.

Abstract Clearance problem in coupling is often experienced in a rotary torsional vibration system. We tried to analyze the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of torsional vibration by modeling the bilinear spring stiffness with changing friction torque. Symmetric and asymmetric spring stiffness with friction models are developed to investigate the behavioral characteristics of the system for simulations and experiments. The frequency response curves and time response curves with external sinusoidal excitation are observed by several non-dimensional numerical simulations. The thoroughly experiments are done to understand the actual phenomena of torsional vibration, verification of models and adjustability of simulations. The frictional property considered as dry friction in coupling is found very significant parameter to reduce the vibration within a tolerable range in both of the simulations and experiments. The difference between the results getting from simulations and experiments are also demonstrated in this paper elaborately.
