Detection of out-of round (OOR) faults of metro vehicle wheels is very important to improve stationarity and stability in metro vehicles and avoid accidents caused by OOR faults. Diagnosis of OOR faults demands extracting useful information accurately from mass of vibration signals with poor signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of metro vehicle wheels for complex running condition. In this paper, we proposed a diagnosis method on OOR faults of metro vehicle wheels combined with variational mode decomposition (VMD), kernel principal component analysis (KPCA), and deep belief network (DBN) to diagnose the OOR faults of metro wheels. Vibration signals of China metro vehicle wheels collected while the metro vehicle is running are used to train the diagnosis model and adjust parameters of DBN and KPCA based on testing accuracy. The different dimensions of KPCA, epoch number, and node number of DBN are compared, and the better parameters of diagnosis model based on vibration signals are concluded in this paper. The generalization of the diagnosis model is checked nine times by testing the calculation of each group of parameters and using an error declining process. The mean accuracy of diagnosis model proposed in this paper is 0.9136, and the diagnosis model presented in this paper is very significant to detect OOR faults online.

Crack and shaft misalignment are two common types of fault in a rotor system, both of which have very similar dynamic response characteristics, and the vibration signals are vulnerable to noise contamination because of the interaction among different components of rotating machinery in the actual industrial environment, resulting in great difficulties in fault identification of a rotor system based on vibration signals. A method for identification of faults in the form of crack and shaft misalignments is proposed in this paper, which combines variational mode decomposition (VMD) and probabilistic principal component analysis (PPCA) to denoise the collected vibration signals from a test rig and then achieve signal feature extraction and fault classification with convolutional artificial neural network (CNN). The key parameters of the CNN are optimized and determined by genetic algorithm (GA) firstly, and the domain adaptability of the trained network is verified by the signals with different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values; then, the noisy vibration signals are decomposed into multiple band-limited intrinsic modal functions by VMD, and further data dimension reduction is performed by PPCA to realize the separation of the useful signals from noise; finally, the crack and shaft misalignment of the rotor system are identified by the optimized CNN. The results show that the proposed method can effectively remove the interference noise and extract the intrinsic features of the vibration signals, and the recognition rates of crack and shaft misalignment faults for the rotor system with different SNR values are more than 99%, which is considered to be very effective and useful.

To address the problem that the faults in axial piston pumps are complex and difficult to effectively diagnose, an integrated hydraulic pump fault diagnosis method based on the modified ensemble empirical mode decomposition (MEEMD), autoregressive (AR) spectrum energy, and wavelet kernel extreme learning machine (WKELM) methods is presented in this paper. First, the non-linear and non-stationary hydraulic pump vibration signals are decomposed into several intrinsic mode function (IMF) components by the MEEMD method. Next, AR spectrum analysis is performed for each IMF component, in order to extract the AR spectrum energy of each component as fault characteristics. Then, a hydraulic pump fault diagnosis model based on WKELM is built, in order to extract the features and diagnose faults of hydraulic pump vibration signals, for which the recognition accuracy reached 100%. Finally, the fault diagnosis effect of the hydraulic pump fault diagnosis method proposed in this paper is compared with BP neural network, support vector machine (SVM), and extreme learning machine (ELM) methods. The hydraulic pump fault diagnosis method presented in this paper can diagnose faults of single slipper wear, single slipper loosing and center spring wear type with 100% accuracy, and the fault diagnosis time is only 0.002 s. The results demonstrate that the integrated hydraulic pump fault diagnosis method based on MEEMD, AR spectrum, and WKELM methods has higher fault recognition accuracy and faster speed than existing alternatives.

In actual engineering applications, inevitable noise seriously affects the accuracy of fault diagnosis for rotating machinery. To effectively identify the fault classes of rotating machinery under noise interference, an efficient fault diagnosis method without additional denoising procedures is proposed. First, a one-dimensional deep residual shrinkage network, which directly takes the raw vibration signals contaminated by noise as input, is developed to realize end-to-end fault diagnosis. Then, to further enhance the noise immunity of the diagnosis model, the first layer of the model is set to a wide convolution layer to extract short time features. Moreover, an adaptive batch normalization algorithm (AdaBN) is introduced into the diagnosis model to enhance the adaptability to noise. Experimental results illustrate that the fault diagnosis model for rotating machinery based on one-dimensional deep residual shrinkage network with a wide convolution layer (1D-WDRSN) can accurately identify the fault classes even under noise interference.

Because deep belief networks (DBNs) in deep learning have a powerful ability to extract useful information from the raw data without prior knowledge, DBNs are used to extract the useful feature from the roller bearings vibration signals. Unlike classification methods, the clustering method can classify the different fault types without data label. Therefore, a method based on deep belief networks (DBNs) in deep learning (DL) and fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering algorithm for roller bearings fault diagnosis without a data label is presented in this paper. Firstly, the roller bearings vibration signals are extracted by using DBN, and then principal component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce the dimension of the vibration signal features. Secondly, the first two principal components (PCs) are selected as the input of fuzzy C-means (FCM) for roller bearings fault identification. Finally, the experimental results show that the fault diagnosis of the method presented is better than that of other combination models, such as variation mode decomposition- (VMD-) singular value decomposition- (SVD-) FCM, and ensemble empirical mode decomposition- (EEMD-) fuzzy entropy- (FE-) PCA-FCM.

This paper proposes a diagnosis method of ball screw preload loss through the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) and Multiscale entropy (MSE) process when machine tool is in operation. Maximum dynamic preload of 2% and 4% ball screws are predesigned, manufactured and conducted experimentally. Vibration signal patterns are examined and revealed by Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) with Hilbert Spectrum. Different preload features are extracted and discriminated by using HHT. The irregularity development of ball screw with preload loss is determined and abstracting via MSE based on complexity perception. The experiment results successfully show preload loss can be envisaged by the proposed methodology.

Online fault diagnosis for the train axle box bearings is a wide and important study topic since it plays a critical role in train safety. Due to the vibration signals nonlinear and non-stationary characteristics, accuracies of the methods such as neural network and hierarchical clustering are less than 90% which are not satisfying. In this paper, kernel principal component analysis (KPCA), a nonlinear process technique, was to tackle each signals 18 feature parameters for extracting the main features to reflect the signal characteristics. Then, in fault pattern recognition, support vector machine (SVM) based on genetic algorithm (GA) was used to identify the current fault type of the bearings, including normal, outer ring fault, inner ring fault and rolling element fault. The results show that the prediction accuracy of GA-SVM method reaches to 96.33%, which is quite effective.

Bearing is a key component of satellite inertia actuators such as moment wheel assemblies (MWAs) and control moment gyros (CMGs), and its operating state is directly related to the performance and service life of satellites. However, because of the complexity of the vibration frequency components of satellite bearing assemblies and the small loading, normal running bearings normally present similar fault characteristics in long-term ground life experiments, which makes it difficult to judge the bearing fault status. This paper proposes an automatic fault diagnosis method for bearings based on a presented indicator called the characteristic frequency ratio. First, the vibration signals of various MWAs were picked up by the bearing vibration test. Then, the improved ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method was introduced to demodulate the envelope of the bearing signals, and the fault characteristic frequencies of the vibration signals were acquired. Based on this, the characteristic frequency ratio for fault identification was defined, and a method for determining the threshold of fault judgment was further proposed. Finally, an automatic diagnosis process was proposed and verified by using different bearing fault data. The results show that the presented method is feasible and effective for automatic monitoring and diagnosis of bearing faults.

S700K turnout is the key equipment of railway line conversion. The diagnosis of S700K turnout in a normal, sub-health, and fault running state is the primary premise to ensure the safe operation of the railway. Aiming at the consistency between the characteristics of the power curve of S700K turnout and its state information, this paper proposes a new algorithm based on variational mode decomposition (VMD) and kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) to extract the characteristics of the power curve of S700K turnout. It uses fuzzy clustering analysis to diagnose the running state of S700K turnout. First, to extract the detailed components of the action power curve, it is decomposed into intrinsic mode function with limited bandwidth (BIMF) by VMD. Secondly, the multi-scale permutation entropy (MPE) is used to characterize the signal complexity of the power curve and different BIMF components, which are taken as the running state feature set. After KPCA analysis, eigenvalues with a contribution rate greater than 95% are selected as the state eigenvector. The experimental results show that the diagnosis algorithm can effectively identify the running state of S700K turnout, meet the characteristics of fewer fault samples of S700K turnout, and do not need to train in advance, which is of great significance for field guidance.

During the operation process of a gearbox, the vibration signals can reflect the dynamic states of the gearbox. The feature extraction of the vibration signal will directly influence the accuracy and effectiveness of fault diagnosis. One major challenge associated with the extraction process is the mode mixing, especially under such circumstance of intensive frequency. A novel fault diagnosis method based on frequency-modulated empirical mode decomposition is proposed in this paper. Firstly, several stationary intrinsic mode functions can be obtained after the initial vibration signal is processed using frequency-modulated empirical mode decomposition method. Using the method, the vibration signal feature can be extracted in unworkable region of the empirical mode decomposition. The method has the ability to separate such close frequency components, which overcomes the major drawback of the conventional methods. Numerical simulation results showed the validity of the developed signal processing method. Secondly, energy entropy was calculated to reflect the changes in vibration signals in relation to faults. At last, the energy distribution could serve as eigenvector of support vector machine to recognize the dynamic state and fault type of the gearbox. The analysis results from the gearbox signals demonstrate the effectiveness and veracity of the diagnosis approach.
