When a working face is crossing the abandoned roadways, problems such as roof subsidence, rock fracture, and instability will occur, resulting in widespread roof fall and rib spalling, which seriously affect safe and efficient mining on the working face. In this paper, the no. 23 coal pillar working face of Juji coal mine is taken as the engineering background, a mechanical model of crossing the abandoned roadways is constructed aimed at the problem of the working face crossing the abandoned roadway group, the collapse of the abandoned roadway roof is analyzed, a scheme of crossing the abandoned roadways is designed, and the development law of the stress and plastic zone after the reinforcement scheme is stimulated and analyzed. The results show that when the working face advances to the abandoned roadway, key block B crosses the abandoned roadway and the solid coal to form a “cross-roadway long key block.” It is calculated that the minimum support resistance required for the abandoned roadway is 6700 kN. Based on the results of numerical comparison, it is concluded that filling wood pile when the working face passes through the roof abandoned roadway and adding anchor cables for reinforcement support when the working face crosses the coal seam abandoned roadway effectively reduce the stress concentration of surrounding rocks, decrease the development of the plastic zone, and achieve safe and efficient mining when the working face crosses the abandoned roadways.

Multi-coal-seam mining creates surrounding rock control difficulties, because the mining of a coal face in one seam can affect coal faces in another. We examine the effects of multi-coal-seam mining on the evolution of the deviatoric stress distribution and plastic zone in the roadway surrounding rock. In particular, we use numerical simulation, theoretical calculation, drilling detection, and mine pressure observation to study the distribution and evolution characteristics of deviatoric stress on Tailgate 8709 in No. 11 coal seam in Jinhuagong mine when the N8707 and N8709 coal faces in No. 7-4 coal seam and the N8707 and N8709 coal faces in No. 11 coal seam are mined. The evolution laws of deviatoric stress and the plastic zone of roadway surrounding rock in the advance and behind sections of the coal face are studied, and a corresponding control technology is proposed. The results show that the peak value of deviatoric stress increases with the advance of the coal face, and the positions of the peak value of deviatoric stress and the plastic zone become deeper. The deflection angle of the peak stress after mining at each coal face and the characteristics of the peak zone of deviatoric stress and the plastic zone of the roadway surrounding rock under the disturbance of multi-coal-seam mining are determined. In conclusion, the damage range in the roadway roof in the solid-coal side and coal pillar is large and must be controlled. A combined support technology based on high-strength and high pretension anchor cables and truss anchor cables is proposed; long anchor cables are used to strengthen the support of the roadway roof in the solid-coal side and coal pillar. The accuracy of the calculated plastic zone range and the reliability of the combined support technology are verified through drilling detection and mine pressure observation on site. This research can provide a point of reference for roadway surrounding rock control under similar conditions.

Aiming at the problem of large deformation and instability failure and its control of soft coal and soft roof roadway under intense mining, laboratory experiments, theoretical calculations, Flac3D numerical simulation, borehole peeping, and pressure observation were used to study the deflection characteristics of the deviatoric stress of the gas tailgate and the distribution and failure characteristics of the plastic zone in the mining face considering the strain softening characteristics of the roof and coal of roadway, and then the truss anchor cable-control technology is proposed. The results show the following: (1) The intense mining influence on the working face will deflect the peak deviatoric stress zone (PDSZ) of the surrounding rock of the gas tailgate. The influence distance of PDSZ is about 20 m in advance and 60 m in lag; the PDSZ at the gob side of the roadway is located in the range of 3–5.5 m from the surface of the coal pillar, while the coal wall side is mainly located in the range of 3–4.5 m at the shoulder corner and bottom corner of the solid coal. (2) The intense mining in the working face caused the nonuniform expansion of the surrounding rock plastic area of the gas tailgate. The two shoulder angles of the roadway and the bottom of the coal pillar have the largest damage range, and the maximum damage location is the side angle of the coal pillar (5 m). Angle and bottom angle of coal pillar are the key points of support control. (3) The plastic failure line of the surrounding rock of the gas tailgate is always between the inner and outer contours of the PDSZ, and the rock mass in the PDSZ is in a stable and unstable transition state, so the range of anchor cable support should be cross plastic failure line. (4) The theoretical calculations and numerical simulation results agree well with the drilling peep results. Based on the deflection law of the PDSZ and the expansion characteristics of the plastic zone, a truss anchor cable supporting system with integrated locking and large-scale support function is proposed to jointly control the roof and the two sides, which effectively solves the problem of weak surrounding rock roadway under severe mining deformation control problems realizing safety and efficient production in coal mines under intense mining.

The mechanical model of the basic roof fracture structure is established on the basis of key block theory to study the roof breaking mechanism of gob-side entry retaining under roof cutting and pressure relief, and the analytical formula of roof support resistance is derived when the key block of the basic roof is stable. The influence of roof cutting angle and cutting height on roof support resistance is also analyzed. Determining the cutting seam parameters of the retained roadway roof is necessary to identify the support resistance of the roadway roof due to the correlation between the roof cutting parameters and the support resistance. Taking the II 632 haulage drift of the Hengyuan coal mine as the engineering background, FLAC3D numerical simulation is used in this paper to analyze the influence of different roof cutting angles and cutting heights on the surrounding rock structure evolution of retained roadways. Results show that the roof cutting angle and cutting height respond to the support resistance of the retained roadway roof, and the support resistance required by the roof increases with the roof cutting angle and cutting height. This condition ensures that the side roof of the gob can be cut off smoothly, and the support resistance required by the roof of retained roadways is within a reasonable range. Through theoretical and numerical simulation analysis, the reasonable roof cutting height of II 632 haulage drift is 8 m and the roof cutting angle is 15°. The theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results reveal that the required support resistance to maintain the stability of the roadway roof is 0.38 MPa. The supporting scheme of the roof of the II 632 haulage drift in the Hengyuan coal mine is then designed. Finally, the field industrial test is used for verification. The borehole imaging results show that the overall line of the retained roadway roof is small based on the description of field monitoring results. The deformation of the surrounding rock surface of the retained roadway is less than 100 mm, and the roadway is 40 m from the lagging working face. The deformation rate of surrounding rock decreases with the increase in distance from the working face. The integrity of the retained roadway roof is good, and the deformation of the surrounding rock is effectively controlled.

Affected by high ground stress, the surrounding rock control of a roadway is one of the most important factors restricting the utilization of deep resources. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a method to improve the stress environment of the deep-buried roadway and reduce its deformation. The article focuses on the 121,302 machine roadway in Kouzidong coal mine to analyze the large deformations of roadways near goafs (RNGs) in deep coal mines and reveal the mechanisms related to pressure relief via roof cutting. Through physical simulation, overburdened structures and the migration laws of RNGs in deep coal mines are studied, and the overburdened RNGs will eventually have a double short-arm “F”-type suspended roof structure. The superposition movement of the structure is the prime cause for the large deformation of the RNGs considered here. Artificial roof cutting can weaken the superposition effect of the double “F” structure and induce the roof to produce a new fracture. Meanwhile, sliding deformation along the fault line releases greater stress, and the cut roof can better fill the goaf. The stress distribution ratio between goafs and the coal pillar is improved. Here, a mechanical model of key block B’ (KBB’) is considered and the stability criterion of KBB’ is obtained. According to the theoretical calculation here, the stress of a coal pillar could be reduced by 19.14% when KBB’ is cut along the edge of the coal pillar in the 121,302 machine roadway. After engineering verification, the field observation result shows that the deformation of the 121,302 machine roadway is reduced by more than 50% after roof cutting.

The width of an abandoned roadway has a great influence on the roof stability of the working face. According to the coal seam conditions of the 30106 working face in the Sanyuan Shiku mine, the advance of a working face through an abandoned roadway was studied by using theoretical analysis, similar material simulation, numerical simulation, and field testing to determine the law of stope roof fracture migration, the stress distribution characteristics, and the variation in support resistance. Several conclusions are drawn: (1) The roof of the overlying strata is fractured at the edge of the abandoned roadway in front of the coal pillar and rotates downward due to the run-through of the plastic zone between the working face and abandoned roadway. (2) The hydraulic support working resistance gradually increases with decreasing coal pillar width between the working face and abandoned roadway, and the working resistance of the support tends to peak when the plastic zone extends to the coal, resulting in 3~4 times the normal recovery. Leakage occurred in front of the support in the caving zone. (3) The analysis of the relationship between the support and surrounding rock with the mechanical model for calculating the support load allows the derivation of the support working resistance formula for a working face passing through an abandoned roadway. (4) When the working face is excavated to expose the abandoned roadway, the shrinkage of the front column of the hydraulic support is significantly greater than that of the back column, and the stability is greatly reduced. This problem can be effectively solved when the uniaxial compressive strength of the backfill ≥2 MPa. (5) The engineering practice showed that the danger of leakage and roof fracture impact load was eliminated with the mining pressure reduction after reinforcement measures were taken in the abandoned roadway. The working face passed the abandoned roadway safely, providing the theoretical basis and guidance for coal remining under similar conditions.

Extremely close coal seam groups are widely distributed in China, and the main mining method is downward mining. In the downward mining process of extremely close coal seam groups, the violent movement of overlying strata will cause the redistribution of surrounding rock stress. It not only produces stress concentration on the pillar but also causes the roof of the lower coal seam to be broken and difficulty in maintaining the mining roadway. In this study, the physical similitude modeling method and field observations were used to study the breakage and migration law of overlying strata in the downward mining of extremely close coal seams. Results show that in the process of mining upper coal seam, the first weighting step of the main roof is 37.5 m and the periodic weighting step is 12.5 m. The occurrence of strata separation is beneficial to the prediction of roof weighting. When the working face advances to 25 m, the rock stratum approximating a parallelogram of height 5 m does not collapse, and the working face is relatively dangerous. When mining the lower coal seam, the overall pressure of the working face is large, but the periodic weighting of the working face is not obvious. The first collapse step of the immediate roof is 15 m. When mining the upper and lower coal seams, the subsidence of the monitoring point increases significantly at 17.5 and 15 m, respectively. The roof collapse of the lower coal seam occurs 2.5 m ahead of that of the upper coal seam. The hydraulic value of the support, roof fall height, and sloughing depth in the entire working face reach the maximum at the coal pillar, and the extreme points at the coal pillar are relatively concentrated. This research provides some guidance for the safe and efficient mining of extremely close coal seams in the future.

Gob-side entry retained technology is of great significance to develop coal mining industry sustainably, which can improve the coal recovery rate by mining without the coal pillar. However, scholars and researchers pay little attention to the gob-side entry retained with soft roof, floor, and seam in thin coal seams. In this study, the difficulties and key points of surrounding rock control for gob-side entry retained with soft roof, floor, and seam in thin coal seams were firstly proposed. Secondly, the mechanical model of the interaction between the roadside backfill body and the roof for gob-side entry retained with soft roof, floor, and seam in thin coal seams was established, and the relevant parameters were designed. Finally, the above results were verified by the engineering practice of gob-side entry retained technology and the monitoring of mine pressure on the 1103 working face of the Heilong Coal Mine. Moreover, the effect factors of surrounding rock stability for gob-side entry retained with soft roof, floor, and seam in thin coal seams were discussed using the discrete element method. The results could provide guidance for gob-side entry retained with soft roof, floor, and seam in thin coal seams under similar geological conditions.

Room-and-pillar mining is a commonly used mining method in previous practice in northwest China mining area. Due to priority selection of high-quality resources, coal mines in northwest China generally have to face upward mining above goaf. Thus, the stability of a floor coal pillar influenced by mining activities plays an essential role in upward mining above goaf. The results indicated that a floor coal pillar kept stable before coal excavation in the no. 6107 working face in the Yuanbaowan coal mine; however, the plastic zone in the floor coal pillar expanded sharply and the elastic core zone reduced suddenly on the influence of abutment pressure. Finally, the floor coal pillar supported failure. Accordingly, the paper proposed a floor coal pillar reinforcing technique through a grout injection filling goaf area. As physically limited by a different-height filling body on the double sides, the plastic zone scope and horizontal displacement and loading capacity of the floor coal pillar were studied, working out that the critical height of the filling body should be about 6 m which can ensure safe mining when upward mining above goaf. Case practice indicated that the fractures induced by mining in the floor coal pillar, filling body, and floor can be restrained effectively when the filling body height is 6 m, which can ensure floor coal pillar stability and safe mining of the no. 6107 working face in the Yuanbaowan coal mine. The research can provide theoretical and technical guidance for upward mining above goaf and have a critical engineering practice value.

The surrounding rock failure range of floor drainage roadway under the mining influence and its effect on the aquiclude are the key to determine the aquiclude thickness of the floor. This paper studied the distribution characteristics of the surrounding rock plastic zone by the numerical simulation when the floor drainage roadway was located at different positions under the working face and determined the rational position. Results show that (1) when the floor drainage roadway is staggered inward, the floor surrounding rock is prone to appear the butterfly plastic zone under single work face mining. And the butterfly plastic zone increases sharply after being affected by secondary mining of adjacent working face. (2) When the floor drainage roadway is staggered outward, the floor surrounding rock plastic zone extends gently affected by a single working face. And the depth of the plastic zone has no obvious change after being affected by secondary mining of adjacent working face. (3) According to the risk of water inrush, the three layout schemes can be ranked as follows: stagger   inward   25   m > stagger   inward   80   m > stagger   outward   15   m . (4) Considering the floor stress environment, gas extraction efficiency, and water prevention and control, the reasonable location of floor drainage roadway below the No. 11060 working face of Zhaogu No. 2 Coal Mine was finally determined. It was arranged in the sandy mudstone layer on the upper part of L9 limestone under the middle part of coal pillar and was drived along the seam floor.
