With the economic development in our country, there are more and more international exchanges and communications. Hence, the ability to read, write, and communicate in English is essential and very necessary. In traditional English classroom teaching, teachers are the disseminators of knowledge, whereas students only receive knowledge passively. Due to the limitation of teaching hours and the lack of teaching approaches, it is necessary to make up for the insufficiency in the teaching activities through computer technology and multimedia technology. Abundant teaching approaches can cultivate the independent inquiry ability of students, and the establishment of such an English learning platform is conducive to improving the students’ ability to make full use of the information technology. Through teaching and learning, the students can become the main entity in the English teaching, which can stimulate their enthusiasm and form a good awareness for English learning. In this paper, the radial basis function (hereinafter referred to as RBF for short) algorithm is adopted. Combined with the constructive English teaching method, practical design and construction are carried out by analyzing the concepts, principles, and application strategies of smart classroom teaching in the multimedia background. The practice has proved that the method proposed in this paper is effective and has certain research value and positive significance for the research on English teaching.

In fact, not a few students find it difficult and lack of enthusiasm in learning English. One of the major problems is the teaching method which is less interesting and tends to be boring. Therefore, one of the solutions to resolve this problem is through the implementation of gamification. One of the most well-known employed gamification tools is Kahoot. Kahoot is one of the most used application to impove students’ engagement in learning English. Kahoot is a free game-based learning platform that can be used by teachers and students. Hence, this paper will describe at first the challenges in teaching English language in digital era. Further, it discusses the theory of gamification in education, advantages of gamification, the description of Kahoot, advantages of using Kahoot and how to apply Kahoot in English classroom. Some previous research highlighting the effect of using Kahoot on the students’ engagement in learning English is the main point covered next. English classroom's process of teaching and learning is an important aspect of successful English teaching and learning. The analysis of classroom discourse is a very important form which the classroom process research has taken place. The present study focuses on SMA (high school) English classroom discourse. The microethnography of Spradley was the research method deployed. Through a detailed description and analysis of the collected data referring to Sinclair and Coulthard’s classroom discourse analysis model, the problem of patterns of the classroom discourse is made clear. On the basis of the discourse patterns' problem found, a few strategies for high school English teachers are put forward through the teacher training in order to improve English teaching and learning at high school in Indonesia. The research results showed that teacher talk highly dominated the English classroom discourse; 94% of teacher-students talk. The oral English teaching faces several common problems: the teaching method is very inefficient, and the learners are poor in oral English. The development of computer-aided language learning offers a possible solution to these problems. Based on techniques of speech recognition, cloud computing and deep learning, this paper applies the deep belief network (DBN) to recognize the speeches in oral English teaching, and establishes a multi-parameter evaluation model for the pronunciation quality of oral English among college students. The model combines the merits of subjective and objective evaluations, and assesses the pronunciation from four aspects: pitch, speech rate, rhythm and intonation. Finally, the proposed model was verified through speech recognition and pronunciation evaluation experiments on 26 non-English majors from a college. The results show that the proposed evaluation model output credible results, which are consistent with those of experts, as evidenced by consistency, neighbourhood consistency and Pearson correlation coefficient. The research provides a feasible way to evaluate the oral English proficiency of learners, laying the basis for improving the teaching and learning efficiency of oral English.

Use of Clickers in classroom teaching and learning has become growingly popular in USA. This study aims to identify whether use of Clickers in college English class can improve learners' English proficiency and enhance students' awareness of metacognition compared with traditional multimedia aided pedagogy in Malaysian contexts. By comparing the data obtained from three questionnaires and an IELTS test instructed via Clickers and traditional multimedia at the end of corresponding semesters, it is found that Clickers pedagogy can give rise to better learning outcomes and higher metacognitive levels than traditional multimedia. Limitations of this study are also discussed, coupled with recommendations for future research.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the role of coding and observation manuals in classroom studies. While observation manuals have been a part of the methodological toolkit for measuring various aspects of instruction for decades, the field has also been suffering from ‘paradigm wars’, fragmentation and local production of instruments. Common frameworks for investigating teaching are needed, including observation instruments for teaching that are both generic and subject specific. Such common tools for research developed within an integrated methodological design could help researchers make progress in aggregating knowledge about the impact of different teaching approaches across settings and subjects. This article serves as one such integrative mechanism by summarizing and reviewing existing manuals targeted towards developing knowledge for and in teaching. The analysis provides status, overview and focus of the different observation manuals; additionally, the article discusses how recent developments in instruments and coding procedures might provide increased rigour and a shared vocabulary to talk about teaching. We discuss both pitfalls and possibilities of coding manuals, and argue that if used in a reflexive manner, coding manuals can provide a common language and vocabulary when talking about – and researching – classroom teaching and learning.
