The study aimed to assess a negative impact of an acquired single-sided deafness on quality of life of the elderly. Prospective analysis of outpatient records was carried out to identify elderly patients with single-sided deafness using pure tone audiometry. The main inclusion criteria were age over 60, ≥90 dB threshold of an affected ear, ≤30 dB threshold of an intact ear, an acquired single-sided hearing loss with sudden onset and deafness duration less than 5 years. Taking inclusion criteria into account two groups were formed: the main group with single-sided deaf patients (n=25) and the control group of normal hearing patients (n=25). All participants were surveyed with PSQ, HHIE, THI questionnaires. There were revealed some changes in psychological status in the group of patients with single-sided deafness in comparison with the group of normal hearing participants. The scores of the questionnaires showed increased stress and anxiety levels and deterioration in quality of life. Patients with single-sided deafness complained about severe tinnitus in an affected ear, worse speech intelligibility in noisy environment and a constant need to adapt to the different acoustic situations that in turn badly affected psychoemotional homeostasis, intensifying stress severity, and quality of life.

Objectives: To study the effect of four weeks of aerobic exercise training, on sleep quality and quality of life parameters like anxiety, depression and physical functioning in Post Myocardial Infarction (MI) patients. Methods: ST elevated MI patients (n=21, <65years age) were voluntarily divided into 2 groups, control group (n=11) and exercising group (n=10). The patients in experimental group followed an exercise program of 3 sessions per week for 4 weeks. The subjective quality of life, anxiety and depression levels were assessed by the SF 36 questionnaire and Hospital Anxiety & Depression Scale (HAD scale) and the sleep quality was assessed using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Poor sleep quality and short sleep duration was defined as PSQI > 5 and total sleep time <6hrs. respectively. After 4 weeks of the program the questionnaires were repeated for all 21 patients. Wilcoxon rank order test and Student T test were used. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant Results: Intergroup analysis showed statically significant reduction in anxiety score (9vs0.5) and depression score (3vs0) in exercise group as compared to control group respectively. As compared to control group, exercise group also showed statistically significant improvement in the quality of life parameter score [physical functioning (750vs1000), role functioning physical (0vs400) & emotional (0vs300), energy level (215vs400), emotional well-being (400vs500), social functioning (120vs200), general health (230vs462.5) & health changes (50vs100)]. Intra group analysis also showed significant changes only in exercise group. After 4 weeks of exercise training, PSQI score improved in the experimental group from 9.5±4.11 to 1.13±0.35 (p=0.00029) indicating better sleep quality and duration. While it remained comparable to the baseline values in the control group i.e. from 9.9±4.70 to 10.33±3.87 (p value= 0.514). Conclusion: Four weeks of exercise program improves the quality & duration of sleep and quality of life in MI patients after 2 weeks of index event.

IntroductionSelf-stigma is a maladaptive psychosocial phenomenon that can disturb self-image and quality of life in psychiatric outpatients and may lead to dysphoria, social isolation and reduced adherence to treatment.ObjectivesSelf-stigma and QoL could be reflected as important factors for patients, who suffer from schizophrenia spectrum disorders, their caregivers and mental health specialists. Focus on reducing the self-stigma in supportive and educational therapy could be an important factor in promoting a higher QoL.AimsCurrent research moved attention to the relationship between demographic data, the severity of symptoms, self-stigma and quality of life in schizophrenic outpatients compared to the QoL in healthy controls.MethodsPatients who met ICD-10 criteria for schizophrenia spectrum disorder were recruited in the study. The Quality of Life Satisfaction and Enjoyment questionnaire (Q-LES-Q), Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness (ISMI) and severity of the disorder measured by objective and subjective Clinical Global Impression severity scales (CGI) were assessed.ResultsOne hundred and nine psychotic patients and 91 healthy controls participated in the study. Compared to the control group, there was a lower QoL and a higher score of self-stigma in psychotic patients. We found the correlation between the self-stigma, duration of disorder and QoL. The level of self-stigma correlated positively with total symptom severity score and negatively with the QoL. Stepwise regression analysis revealed that the objective severity and self-stigma score were significantly associated with the quality of life (Figure 2 and 3, Fig. 1).ConclusionsOur study suggests a negative impact of self-stigma level on the quality of life in patients suffering from schizophrenia spectrum disorders.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Background Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) has been used as a primary health outcome in cardiac rehabilitation programs (CRP). Aims This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an 8-week CRP on HRQOL and exercise capacity in myocardial infarction (MI) patients in Korea. Methods After matching on gender, age, and left ventricular ejection fraction, 60 subjects with a first acute MI were allocated to either a CRP group ( n =31) or a Control group ( n =29). The 8-week CRP included hospital-based, supervised exercise training (three times per week, average intensity of 65% VO2peak) and individual education sessions. The Control group was instructed on a home-based exercise regimen without contact during the 8 weeks. At baseline and 8 weeks, HRQOL was assessed by the Quality of Life Index (QLI)–cardiac version III; exercise capacity by a treadmill test. Results After adjusting for education level, the overall QLI, health/functioning and psycho/spiritual scores showed greater increases in the CRP group than the Control group ( p=.014, p=.016, and p=.036, respectively). We observed significant improvements in VO2peak ( p<.0001), anaerobic threshold ( p<.0001), and maximal exercise duration ( p<.0001) in the CRP group, compared to the Control group. Conclusions These findings suggest that the Korean CRP can lead to significant improvements in HRQOL outcomes and exercise capacity.
