The Datong mining area is a typical double system coal seam mining area in China, where the Jurassic and Carboniferous coal seams are mined simultaneously. The upper Jurassic coal seam has been largely mined, leaving a large amount of gob area. Besides, a large amount of harmful water is accumulated. With the exploitation of the 3-5# extra-thick coal seam in the Carboniferous system, the scope of overburden damage is greatly increasing, and the mining fracture field is further developed. Once the mining-induced fractures connect with the overlying gob, it is easy to induce the water discharge disaster. With the mining geological conditions of the 8202 working face in the Tongxin coal mine as references, the disastrous mechanism of water discharge in the abandoned gob above the stope in the mining extra-thick coal seam is researched by numerical simulation with the UDEC numerical software, and the research results are obtained. The water in the overlying gob percolates through the mining-induced fractures in the higher key layer forming a “shower” seepage pattern. The water in the above gob converges in the key fracture channel, flowing into the working face. The seepage in the fractures in the high key stratum experiences the process of increase, decrease, and stabilization, related with the stretching and extrusion deformation between the high key stratum blocks. Compared with other fractures, the flow rates in the No.2 and No.4 fractures in the far field key lay are larger, because the fractures are in the tension state, forming the “saddle-shaped” flow pattern. The influencing distance of mining-induced seepage is about 80 m in front of the working face. The research results provide a guided reference for the prediction and prevention of water discharge disaster in an abandoned gob above the stope in a mining extra-thick coal seam.

In order to reveal the evolution law of gas discharge of carbon monoxide in mining an extra-thick coal seam of the Datong mining area by the numerical simulation and field monitoring test, the 8202 working face and 8309 working face in the Tongxin coal mine are chosen as the test sites. The results show that the seepage flow of carbon monoxide gas reaches 1.854 × 10 − 8   m 3 / s in the #1 fracture after the #3 key stratum in the far field breaks in the 8202 working face, the seepage flow of carbon monoxide gas reaches 1.307 × 10 − 7   m 3 / s in the #2 fracture, the seepage flow of carbon monoxide gas reaches 4.276 × 10 − 7   m 3 / s in the #3 fracture, the seepage flow of carbon monoxide gas reaches 4.192 × 10 − 7   m 3 / s in the #4 fracture, and the seepage flow of carbon monoxide gas reaches 1.623 × 10 − 7   m 3 / s in the #5 fracture. The initial caving of the #3 key stratum in the far field occurs and collapses to the gob, when the working face in the #3-5 coal seam advances to 180 m, and the voussoir beam forms in the #3 key stratum. Besides, a shower shape was formed by the seepage flow of carbon monoxide gas, and the maximum flow in the working face reaches 4.562 × 10 − 4   m 3 / s . When the 8309 working face advances from 521.2 m to 556.4 m, the air pressure at the working face gradually rises and reaches the maximum magnitude and then begins to decrease; when the working face advances to 556.4 m, the air pressure at the working face reaches the maximum magnitude of 91.35 kPa. The gas discharge disaster of carbon monoxide in mining the extra-thick coal seam of the Datong mining area is effectively controlled by the dynamic balance multipoint control technology. The research results can be treated as an important theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment for carbon monoxide discharge disaster in mining the extra-thick coal seam of the Datong mining area.

The water inrush of a working face is the main hidden danger to the safe mining of underwater coal seams. It is known that the development of water-flowing fractured zones in overlying strata is the basic path which causes water inrushes in working faces. In the engineering background of the underwater mining in the Longkou Mining Area, the analysis model and judgment method of crack propagation were created on the basis of the Mohr–Coulomb criterion. Fish language was used to couple the extension model into the FLAC3d software, in order to simulate the mining process of the underwater coal seam, as well as to analyze the initiation evolutionary characteristics and seepage laws of the fractured zones in the overlying strata during the advancing processes of the working face. The results showed that, during the coal seam mining process, the mining fractured zones which had been caused by the compression-shear and tension-shear were mainly concentrated in the overlying strata of the working face. Also, the open-off cut and mining working face were the key sections of the water inrush in the rock mass. The condition of the water disaster was the formation of a water inrush channel. The possible water inrush channels in underwater coal mining are mainly composed of water-flowing fractured zones which are formed during the excavation processes. The numerical simulation results were validated through the practical engineering of field observations on the height of water-flowing fractured zone, which displayed a favorable adaptability.

Abstract Gob-side entry retained with roadside filling (GER-RF) plays a key role in achieving coal mining without pillar and improving the coal resource recovery rate. Since there are few reports on the cyclic filling length of GER-RF, a method based on the stress difference method is proposed to determine the cyclic filling length of GER-RF. Firstly, a stability analysis mechanics model of the immediate roof above roadside filling area in GER was established, then the relationship between the roof stress distribution and the unsupported roof length was obtained by the stress difference method. According to the roof stability above roadside filling area based on the relationship between the roof stress and its tensile strength, the maximum unsupported roof length and rational cyclic filling length of GER-RF. Combined with the geological conditions of the 1103 thin coal seam working face of Heilong Coal Mine and the geological conditions of the 1301 thick coal seam working face of Licun Coal Mine, this suggested method was applied to determine that the rational cyclic filling lengths of GER-RF were 2.4 m and 3.2 m, respectively. Field trial tests show that the suggested method can effectively control the surrounding rock deformation along with rational road-in support and roadside support, and improve the filling and construction speed.

Gob-side entry retaining technology with roof cutting (GERRC) has been widely used in flat and near-flat coal seam conditions, but its application under inclined coal seam is still very deficient. In order to further improve the application system of GERRC and overcome the application difficulties under special geological conditions, this paper takes the 43073 working face of Yixin coal mine as an example to research the GERRC with upper roadway under gently inclined thick coal seam. Firstly, the difficulties in the upper entry retaining with inclined coal seam are analyzed and the corresponding key technologies and system designs are put forward. Subsequently, the roof cutting and upper entry retaining are designed in detail according to geological conditions of test working face, and the roof cutting and pressure releasing effect is analyzed by numerical simulation to expound the stress distribution and pressure releasing mechanism of surrounding rock. Finally, the upper entry retaining field test is carried out to verify the feasibility and applicability of the technology and related designs. Through field monitoring, it is found that the weighting step increases significantly, the weighting strength decreases effectively on the roof cutting side, and the pressure relief effect is obvious. Meanwhile, the maximum roof to floor convergence is 361 mm and the maximum shrinkage of both sides is 280 mm, so the retained entry can meet the reuse requirement of adjacent working face.

Background:: China's thin and extremely thin coal seam resources are widely distributed and rich in reserves. These coal seams account for 20% of the recoverable reserves, with 9.83 billion tons of industrial reserves and 6.15 billion tons of recoverable reserves. Objective: Due to the complex geological conditions of the thin coal seam, the plow mining method cannot be effectively popularized, and the drum mining method is difficult to be popularized and applied in small and medium-sized coal mines, so it is necessary to find other more advantageous alternative mining methods. Methods: The equipment integrates mining operations, conveying operations, and supporting operations, and is suitable for mining short and extremely thin coal seam with a height of 0.35m-0.8m and width of 2m-20m. It has the advantages of the low body of the shearer, no additional support on the working face, and small underground space. The mining efficiency of thin coal seam and very thin coal seam can be improved and the mining cost can be reduced. Results: Thin coal seam shear mining combines mining, conveying, and supporting processes together and has the advantages of a low fuselage, no extra support required for the working face, and feasibility in a small underground space. Conclusion: The summarized mining method can improve the mining efficiency of thin and extremely thin coal seams, reduce mining costs, and incorporate green mining practices, which take both mining economy and safety into account.

According to the specific geological conditions in themulti-layer worked-out areas of Yongding coal seam, by the methods of integration of theoretic analysis, numerical value calculation and so on, we studied movement law of Overlaying Strata and influence of coal pillar in Coal seam mining, obtained the basic law of the overlying strata movement in multiplayer, provides a theoretical basis for the safe and efficient exploitation of the success of multiplayer. Many mining area in China is mining of closed distance coal seam group, By the impact of coal seam in the overlying, face and the tunnel roof structure will be different injury in sub-coal seam mining, Roof structure has changed greatly, even damage and easily take the roof leakage, When the the goaf communication with the overlying coal seams, caused by the induced secondary disasters such as face air leakage, Therefore, exploitation of the law of motion of the overlying strata in the multiplayer is a pressing problem. Exploitation multiplayer seam few theoretical and technical foundation at home and abroad, affecting the validity of the mining, rationality. although a lot of research on theory and technology of coal mining over the years[1~5], But it was not able to an overall comprehensive analysis of upper goaf adjacent goaf and overlying the coal pillar and present mining face, create a dynamic structural mechanics model, which is likely to cause the occurrence of disasters.

The movements of overburden induced by mining a thick coal seam with a hard roof extend widely. The effects of breakages in the hard strata on the strata behaviors might vary with the overlying strata layers. For this reason, we applied a test method that integrated a borehole TV tester, borehole-based monitoring of strata movement, and monitoring of support resistance for an in situ investigation of a super-thick, 14–20 m coal seam mining in the Datong mining area in China. The results showed that the range of the overburden movement was significantly high, which could reach to more than 300 m. The key strata (KS) in the lower layer main roof were broken into a ‘cantilever beam and voussoir beam’ structure. This structure accounted for the ‘long duration and short duration’ strata behaviors in the working face. On the other hand, the hard KS in the upper layer broke into a ‘high layer structure’. The structural instability induced intensive and wide-ranging strata behaviors that lasted for a long time (two to three days). Support in the working face were over-pressured by large dynamic factors and were widely crushed, while the roadways were violently deformed. Hence, the structure of a thick coal seam with a hard roof after mining will form a ‘cantilever beam and voussoir beam and high layer structure’, which is unique to a large space stope.

The FLAC-3D software was used to study the surrounding rock displacement and the side abutment pressure distribution laws about roadway in thick coal seam. Based on this model, through change the mining height, working face length and mining depth, the differences of roadway underground pressure characteristics were analyzed between thick coal seam working face and normal working face. The results indicate that: ①the displacement of roadway surrounding rock increases with the increase of mining depth and mining height, the closer to the coal wall the larger of the increase range of roadway displacement. ②the peak of side abutment pressure increases with the increase of mining depth and mining height, the peak district of the stress will move toward the inner department of rock body. ③ the effect of working face length on the roadway displacement and the side abutment pressure is very feeble.

Abstract This work aimed at revealing the mechanism of strong strata behavior in extra-thick coal seam mining which was influenced by an overlying coal pillar (OCP). To this end, the evolution characteristics of the stress and displacement in advance coal body of the working face were studied via numerical simulation. On this basis, the mechanism of strong strata behavior in working face affected by OCP was revealed. In situ monitoring also demonstrated that, as the working face mining near to the position of OCP, severe rib spalling and roadway deformation frequently appeared. The scheme of strengthening the hydraulic supports resistance and adding anchor cables was put forward to control the surrounding rocks in the stope. As a result, the maximum deformation of the roadway height was 0.66m and could completely meet the demands for safe mining. The study on the mechanism of strong strata behavior in working face and the strengthen supporting scheme would provide a theoretical basis for similar mining conditions, thus ensure safe and efficiency coal seam mining.
