A new type joint of Circular Tubed Steel-Reinforced Concrete (CTSRC) columns was designed in this paper. The structural characteristics, manufacturing process, and mechanical properties of raw materials of the new joint were introduced. In order to simulate the earthquake action, two joint specimens were subjected to low-cycle cyclic loading at the end of the column. Based on the in-depth study of the failure characteristics, load-displacement hysteretic curve, skeleton curve, ductility index, load-strain hysteretic curve in the core area of the joint, energy dissipation performance, strength and stiffness degradation performance, and shear deformation in the core area of the joint during the whole loading process, the seismic behavior of this new type of joint was investigated. The results show that the new joint has reasonable failure characteristics, high bearing capacity, good ductility, excellent seismic energy dissipation performance, and strong resistance to strength and stiffness degradation, which meets the seismic design principle of “strong joint and weak component” and is suitable for the results with special requirements for seismic performance. In addition, preliminary design recommendations were put forward. The research results of this paper can provide a theoretical basis for the application of this kind of new structure.

Joints are the forces cross points of members, and the bearing modes are more complex than other members, especially under earthquake action, so the rationality of joints are directly related to the safe reliability of structure. By the pseudo-static test of 4 concrete-filled square steel tubular column and steel beam joint with outer stiffened ring, this paper discusses the failure characteristics, failure mechanism and seismic behavior of joints under different axial compression ratio. The analysis of the testing results shows: the energy dissipation capacity of joints is much better, the degradation of strength and stiffness are slowly when reached the ultimate strength, and the ductility is also good.

Three specimens with ribbed stainless steel rebar and one specimen with ribbed ordinary steel rebar are tested concerning the strength degradation and energy dissipation of stainless steel reinforced concrete columns. The tests results indicate that the damage of the specimens exhibit ductile failure characteristics, and the reinforced concrete columns with stainless steel rebar damage to a lesser extent, appear good ductility and energy dissipation. The strength degradation of stainless steel reinforced column with high axial compression ratio is quite obvious, and with the increasing of the stirrup ratio of column with stainless steel rebar, the strength of column is enhanced.

A new type of construction employing shaped steels as boundary elements and layered braces of RC(Reinforced Concrete) short-pier shear wall is put forward. The braces are in X shape and are erected in a multi-storied form. They are embedded in the boundary zone and the web of SRC (Steel Reinforced Concrete) short-pier shear wall respectively to make it possible to improve the bearing capacity and ductility of this shear wall and to improve its seismic performance. Three half-scale specimens of the SRC short-pier shear wall are tested under reversed cyclic loading. High design axial load radio of 0.5 is used. The failure processes and modes of the specimens are observed. The law about bearing capacity and displacement ductility of the specimens influenced by the layered braces structures is revealed. The experimental results show that the displacement ductility is closely related to the amount of stories of braces. The specimens with layered braces structures have better ductility and larger bearing capacity, and therefore the layered braces structures effectively improve the seismic performance of the SRC short-pier shear wall.

The lateral performance of a typical reinforced concrete external wall panel is analyzed by finite element method and the analysis results show that the reinforced concrete external wall panel has a certain strength and stiffness in its own plane. In order to rational use the strength and stiffness of the wall panel, a new type of energy dissipation connector is designed based on passive energy dissipation. The energy dissipation connector is analyzed by finite element method and the analysis results show that this energy dissipation connector has ideal hysteresis curve. The energy dissipation connector can improve the seismic behavior of main structure through rational design.

In this paper, two joints of circular tubed steel-reinforced concrete (CTSRC) column were designed. The load-displacement hysteretic curve and skeleton curve of this new type of joint are obtained by the pseudostatic test under low cycle cyclic load on the top of the column. The results show that this new type of joint has good seismic energy dissipation performance. On the basis of the test, a three-fold skeleton curve model considering three characteristic points of yield, limit, and failure is proposed, and the expression of skeleton curve model is given. The load and unload stiffness degradation law of specimens under reciprocating load is studied, and the expression of stiffness degradation law is given. The hysteresis law of the new type joint specimens is described in detail. The validity of the model is verified by comparing the experimental curve with the model curve. The model can be used in the elastic-plastic seismic time-history analysis on the joint of circular tubed steel-reinforced concrete (CTSRC) column.

The results of an experimental program on eight short reinforced concrete columns having different structural sizes and axial compression ratios subjected to monotonic/cyclic lateral loading were reported. A 3D mesoscopic simulation method for the analysis of mechanical properties of reinforced concrete members was established, and then it was utilized as an important supplement and extension of the traditional experimental method. Lots of numerical trials, based on the restricted experimental results and the proposed 3D mesoscopic simulation method, were carried out to sufficiently evaluate the seismic performances of short reinforced concrete columns with different structural sizes and axial compression ratios. The test results indicate that (1) the failure pattern of reinforced concrete columns can be significantly affected by the shear-span ratio; (2) increasing the axial compression ratio could improve the load capacity of the reinforced concrete column, but the deformation capacity would be restricted and the failure mode would be more brittle, consequently the energy dissipation capacity could be deteriorated; and (3) the load capacity, the displacement ductility, and the energy dissipation capacity of the short reinforced concrete columns all exhibit clear size effect, namely, the size effect could significantly affect the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete columns.
