With the development of microelectronic technology and computer systems, the research of motion intention recognition based on multimodal sensors has attracted the attention of the academic community. Deep learning and other nonlinear neural network models have a wide range of applications in big data sets. We propose a motion intention recognition algorithm based on multimodal long-term and short-term spatiotemporal feature fusion. We divide the target data into multiple segments and use a three-dimensional convolutional neural network to extract the short-term spatiotemporal features. The three types of features of the same segment are fused together and input into the LSTM network for time-series modeling to further fuse the features to obtain multimodal long-term spatiotemporal features with higher discrimination. According to the lower limb movement pattern recognition model, the minimum number of muscles and EMG signal characteristics required to accurately recognize the movement state of the lower limbs are determined. This minimizes the redundant calculation cost of the model and ensures the real-time output of the system results.

Multistep ahead prediction of a chaotic time series is a difficult task that has attracted increasing interest in the recent years. The interest in this work is the development of nonlinear neural network models for the purpose of building multistep chaotic time series prediction. In the literature there is a wide range of different approaches but their success depends on the predicting performance of the individual methods. Also the most popular neural models are based on the statistical and traditional feed forward neural networks. But it is seen that this kind of neural model may present some disadvantages when long-term prediction is required. In this paper focused time-lagged recurrent neural network (FTLRNN) model with gamma memory is developed for different prediction horizons. It is observed that this predictor performs remarkably well for short-term predictions as well as medium-term predictions. For coupled partial differential equations generated chaotic time series such as Mackey Glass and Duffing, FTLRNN-based predictor performs consistently well for different depths of predictions ranging from short term to long term, with only slight deterioration after k is increased beyond 50. For real-world highly complex and nonstationary time series like Sunspots and Laser, though the proposed predictor does perform reasonably for short term and medium-term predictions, its prediction ability drops for long term ahead prediction. However, still this is the best possible prediction results considering the facts that these are nonstationary time series. As a matter of fact, no other NN configuration can match the performance of FTLRNN model. The authors experimented the performance of this FTLRNN model on predicting the dynamic behavior of typical Chaotic Mackey-Glass time series, Duffing time series, and two real-time chaotic time series such as monthly sunspots and laser. Static multi layer perceptron (MLP) model is also attempted and compared against the proposed model on the performance measures like mean squared error (MSE), Normalized mean squared error (NMSE), and Correlation Coefficient (r). The standard back-propagation algorithm with momentum term has been used for both the models.

Electromyogram (EMG) signals cannot be forged and have the advantage of being able to change the registered data as they are characterized by the waveform, which varies depending on the gesture. In this paper, a two-step biometrics method was proposed using EMG signals based on a convolutional neural network–long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) network. After preprocessing of the EMG signals, the time domain features and LSTM network were used to examine whether the gesture matched, and single biometrics was performed if the gesture matched. In single biometrics, EMG signals were converted into a two-dimensional spectrogram, and training and classification were performed through the CNN-LSTM network. Data fusion of the gesture recognition and single biometrics was performed in the form of an AND. The experiment used Ninapro EMG signal data as the proposed two-step biometrics method, and the results showed 83.91% gesture recognition performance and 99.17% single biometrics performance. In addition, the false acceptance rate (FAR) was observed to have been reduced by 64.7% through data fusion.

With the development of society and the improvement of people's material level, more and more people like to travel by airplane. If we can predict the passenger flow of an airline in advance, it can be used as an important decision-making basis for its flight route planning, crew scheduling planning and ticket price formulation in the process of management and operation. However, due to the high complexity of aviation network, the existing traffic prediction methods generally have the problem of low prediction accuracy. In order to overcome this problem, this paper makes full use of graph convolutional neural network and long—short memory network to construct a prediction system with short—term prediction ability. Specifically, this paper uses the graph convolutional neural network as a feature extraction tool to extract the key features of air traffic data, and solves the problem of long term and short term dependence between data through the long term memory network, then we build a high-precision air traffic prediction system based on it. Finally, we design a comparison experiment to compare the algorithm with the traditional algorithms. The results show that the algorithm we proposed in this paper has a higher accuracy in air flow prediction according to the lower loss function value.

Recent deep learning-based Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) decoding algorithms mainly focus on spatial-temporal features, while failing to explicitly explore spectral information which is one of the most important cues for BCI. In this paper, we propose a novel regional attention convolutional neural network (RACNN) to take full advantage of spectral-spatial-temporal features for EEG motion intention recognition. Time-frequency based analysis is adopted to reveal spectral-temporal features in terms of neural oscillations of primary sensorimotor. The basic idea of RACNN is to identify the activated area of the primary sensorimotor adaptively. The RACNN aggregates a varied number of spectral-temporal features produced by a backbone convolutional neural network into a compact fixed-length representation. Inspired by the neuroscience findings that functional asymmetry of the cerebral hemisphere, we propose a region biased loss to encourage high attention weights for the most critical regions. Extensive evaluations on two benchmark datasets and real-world BCI dataset show that our approach significantly outperforms previous methods.

AbstractThe remaining useful life (RUL) estimation of bearings is critical for ensuring the reliability of mechanical systems. Owing to the rapid development of deep learning methods, a multitude of data-driven RUL estimation approaches have been proposed recently. However, the following problems remain in existing methods: 1) Most network models use raw data or statistical features as input, which renders it difficult to extract complex fault-related information hidden in signals; 2) for current observations, the dependence between current states is emphasized, but their complex dependence on previous states is often disregarded; 3) the output of neural networks is directly used as the estimated RUL in most studies, resulting in extremely volatile prediction results that lack robustness. Hence, a novel prognostics approach is proposed based on a time–frequency representation (TFR) subsequence, three-dimensional convolutional neural network (3DCNN), and Gaussian process regression (GPR). The approach primarily comprises two aspects: construction of a health indicator (HI) using the TFR-subsequence–3DCNN model, and RUL estimation based on the GPR model. The raw signals of the bearings are converted into TFR-subsequences by continuous wavelet transform and a dislocated overlapping strategy. Subsequently, the 3DCNN is applied to extract the hidden spatiotemporal features from the TFR-subsequences and construct HIs. Finally, the RUL of the bearings is estimated using the GPR model, which can also define the probability distribution of the potential function and prediction confidence. Experiments on the PRONOSTIA platform demonstrate the superiority of the proposed TFR-subsequence–3DCNN–GPR approach. The use of degradation-related spatiotemporal features in signals is proposed herein to achieve a highly accurate bearing RUL prediction with uncertainty quantification.

In this paper, we address various challenges in multi-pedestrian and vehicle tracking in high-resolution aerial imagery by intensive evaluation of a number of traditional and Deep Learning based Single- and Multi-Object Tracking methods. We also describe our proposed Deep Learning based Multi-Object Tracking method AerialMPTNet that fuses appearance, temporal, and graphical information using a Siamese Neural Network, a Long Short-Term Memory, and a Graph Convolutional Neural Network module for more accurate and stable tracking. Moreover, we investigate the influence of the Squeeze-and-Excitation layers and Online Hard Example Mining on the performance of AerialMPTNet. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to use these two for regression-based Multi-Object Tracking. Additionally, we studied and compared the L1 and Huber loss functions. In our experiments, we extensively evaluate AerialMPTNet on three aerial Multi-Object Tracking datasets, namely AerialMPT and KIT AIS pedestrian and vehicle datasets. Qualitative and quantitative results show that AerialMPTNet outperforms all previous methods for the pedestrian datasets and achieves competitive results for the vehicle dataset. In addition, Long Short-Term Memory and Graph Convolutional Neural Network modules enhance the tracking performance. Moreover, using Squeeze-and-Excitation and Online Hard Example Mining significantly helps for some cases while degrades the results for other cases. In addition, according to the results, L1 yields better results with respect to Huber loss for most of the scenarios. The presented results provide a deep insight into challenges and opportunities of the aerial Multi-Object Tracking domain, paving the way for future research.

AbstractThe ability to emulate multiplexed neurochemical transmission is an important step toward mimicking complex brain activities. Glutamate and dopamine are neurotransmitters that regulate thinking and impulse signals independently or synergistically. However, emulation of such simultaneous neurotransmission is still challenging. Here we report design and fabrication of synaptic transistor that emulates multiplexed neurochemical transmission of glutamate and dopamine. The device can perform glutamate-induced long-term potentiation, dopamine-induced short-term potentiation, or co-release-induced depression under particular stimulus patterns. More importantly, a balanced ternary system that uses our ambipolar synaptic device backtrack input ‘true’, ‘false’ and ‘unknown’ logic signals; this process is more similar to the information processing in human brains than a traditional binary neural network. This work provides new insight for neuromorphic systems to establish new principles to reproduce the complexity of a mammalian central nervous system from simple basic units.
