This paper aims at investigating the elastic buckling behavior and the effective width method (EWM) to predict the ultimate strength of the simply supported rectangular plates under gradient stress (SSRPSG) with circular or rectangular holes. The analytical models of SSRPSG with circular or rectangular holes were established by using the finite-element (FE) software ABAQUS. The FE parametric study covered the aspect ratio, slenderness ratio, and stress gradients of plate and the dimension and spacing of holes. The FE analysis included eigenvalue buckling analysis and ultimate strength analysis. The eigenvalue results show that the buckling coefficient of the perforated plate gradually decreases, and subsequently, it gradually increases with the increase of the dimension of the hole. The buckling mode changes from the buckling including hole to the buckling of plate strip adjacent to hole at the section of the hole. The increasing stress gradient causes an increasing effect on buckling coefficient. The buckling coefficients are less affected by the aspect ratio and the slenderness ratio of the perforated plate and the spacing of hole when the hole spacing meets a certain limitation. The buckling coefficient equations of the SSRPSG with circular or rectangular holes were developed according to results obtained by FE analysis. Finally, the effective width design method was developed based on FE results and developed buckling coefficient equations. The comparisons on ultimate strength between FE results and the predicted results for SSRPSG with circular and rectangular holes and between the predicted results and test results for perforated columns and beams indicate that the proposed effective width design method is accurate, which can be used to predict the ultimate strength of SSRPSG with circular or rectangular holes.

The curved plate has been extensively used as a structural member in many industrial fields, especially the shipbuilding industry. The present study investigated the ultimate strength and collapse behavior of the simply supported curved plate under a longitudinal compressive load. To do this, experimental apparatuses for evaluating the buckling collapse test of the curved plates was developed. Then, a series of buckling collapse experiments was carried out by considering the flank angle, slenderness ratio, and aspect ratio of plates. To examine the fundamental buckling and collapse behavior of the curved plate, elastoplastic large deflection analysis was performed using the commercial finite element analysis program. On the basis of both the experimental and FE analysis, the effects of the flank angle, slenderness ratio, and aspect ratio on the characteristics of the buckling and collapse behavior of the curved plates are discussed. Finally, the empirical design formula for predicting the ultimate strength of curved plates was derived. The proposed empirical formula is a good indicator for estimating the behavior of the curved plate.

In this article, a comparative study is presented on the post-buckling load redistribution in stiffened aircraft panels modeled with and without material nonlinearity. In the first part of the study, a baseline stiffened panel is generated for further investigation of the material nonlinearity on the post-buckling behavior and on the effective width of the stiffened panel. In this respect, a stiffener section which provides classical clamped edge condition is designed by matching the compression buckling coefficient determined by the finite element analysis closely with the analytically determined buckling coefficient of the clamped edge panel. Post-buckling analysis of the stiffened panel is then performed utilizing linear and nonlinear material models in the finite element analysis and the effect of material plasticity on the post-buckling behavior of the panel is ascertained. The load distribution in the stiffened panel is investigated just before the buckling of the panel and before the collapse of the panel in the post-buckled stage. The effective widths of the panel are calculated before the collapse of the panel using the load distributions determined by the finite element analyses of the panel models with and without material nonlinearity and comparisons are made with the effective width calculated by the classical effective width formulation. It is shown that material nonlinearity accounts for higher effective width and in general the classical empirical approach gives the smallest effective width.

Numerical analyses and theoretic analyses are presented to study the elastic buckling of H-section beam web under combined bending and shear force. Results show that the buckling stress of a single web with clamped edges gives a good agreement with the buckling stress of an H-section beam web when the local buckling of the beam is dominated by the web buckling. Based on theoretic analyses, a parametric study is conducted to simplify the calculation of buckling coefficients. The parameters involved are clarified first, and the improved equations for the buckling coefficient and buckling stress are suggested. By applying the proposed method, the web buckling slenderness ratio is defined. It is verified that the web buckling slenderness ratio has a strong correlation with the normalized ultimate strength of H-section beams when the buckling of the beams is dominated by web buckling. Finally, a design equation is proposed for the ultimate strength of H-section beams.

This study predicts the behavior of welded plate panels (unstiffened plates) with different geometrical properties (slenderness ratio and aspect ratio) in order to address a rational structural design procedure, as these parameters are of great importance from a structural design perspective. Nonlinear finite element analysis has been used to simulate the butt-welding process of plate panels, giving the three-dimensional distribution of distortion and residual stresses induced by welding through the design of a moving heat source. The numerical results are validated with published experimental measurements. The effect of geometrical properties such as slenderness ratio β and aspect ratio a/b on the creation of welding-induced imperfections (distortion and residual stresses) have been investigated in this work. These geometrical properties influence the creation of the welding-induced imperfections, which in turn affect the load-carrying capacity of the plate panels. Three different plate slenderness ratios with three different aspect ratios have been studied. It is concluded that increasing the plate aspect ratio can highly increase the out-of-plane distortion magnitude as well as the compressive residual stress. The plates with high slenderness ratio (thin thicknesses) are highly affected by increasing plate aspect ratio a/b. As the slenderness ratio β increases, the reduction in the ultimate strength due to the existence of welding-induced imperfections highly decreases. Slenderness ratio β can highly affected the ultimate strength of plates with smaller aspect ratio more than plates with higher aspect ratio.

The values of Many parameters which involve in the design of fluid film journal bearings mainly depend on the bearing applied load when using the conventional design method to design the journal bearings, in this study, as well as applied bearing load, the dynamic response and critical speed have been used to calculate the dimensions of journal bearings. In the field of rotating machine, especially a heavy-duty rotating machines, the critical speed and response are the main parameters that specify bearing dimensions. The bearing aspect ratio (bearing length to bore diameter) and bearing clearance have been determined based on rotor maximum critical speed and minimum response displacement. The analytical solution of rotor Eq. of motion was verified by numerical solution via using ANSYS Mechanical APDL 18.0 and by comparing the numerical solution with the preceding study. The final study results clearly showed that the bearing aspect ratio has little effect on the critical speed, but it has a high effect on the dynamic response also the bearing clearance has little effect on the critical speed and considerable effect on the dynamic response. The study showed that the more accurate values of bearing aspect ratio to make the response of rotor as low as possible are about 0.65 - 1 and bearing percent clearance is about 0.15 - 0.2 for different rotor dimensions.

The effect of welding residual stress on the buckling behavior of storage tanks subjected to the harmonic settlement was simulated using the shell-to-solid coupling method. In the numerical model of tanks coupled with the welding residual stress, the welding joint and its adjacent zone were modeled using the solid submodel and the zone far away from the welding joint was built by the shell submodel. Effects of welding parameters (e.g., welding velocities and welding passes) on the buckling behavior of tanks were analyzed systematically. Results indicate that the buckling strength of tanks is enhanced due to the welding residual stress. Comparatively, a slow welding velocity presents a more remarkable strengthening effect than the fast welding velocity due to a larger axial residual stress produced at the welding joint. Nevertheless, no significant difference between the double-side welding and the one-side welding for buckling strength enhancement is observed for the cases studied. This indicates that the current design method causes a conservative design without considering the welding residual stress.

This study aims at studying different configurations of the stiffened panels in order to identify robust configurations that would not be much sensitive to the imprecision in boundary conditions that can exist in experimental set ups. A numerical study is conducted to analyze the influence of the stiffener’s geometry and boundary conditions on the ultimate strength of stiffened panels under uniaxial compression. The stiffened panels with different combinations of mechanical material properties and geometric configurations are considered. The four types of stiffened panels analysed are made of mild or high tensile steel and have bar, ‘L’ and ‘U’ stiffeners. To understand the effect of finite element modelling on the ultimate strength of the stiffened panels, four types of FE models are investigated in FE analysis including 3 bays, 1/2+1+1/2 bays, 1+1 bays and 1 bay with different boundary conditions.

Purpose Computational efficiency is always the major concern in aircraft design. The purpose of this research is to investigate an efficient jig-shape optimization design method. A new jig-shape optimization method is presented in the current study and its application on the high aspect ratio wing is discussed. Design/methodology/approach First, the effects of bending and torsion on aerodynamic distribution were discussed. The effect of bending deformation was equivalent to the change of attack angle through a new equivalent method. The equivalent attack angle showed a linear dependence on the quadratic function of bending. Then, a new jig-shape optimization method taking integrated structural deformation into account was proposed. The method was realized by four substeps: object decomposition, optimization design, inversion and evaluation. Findings After the new jig-shape optimization design, both aerodynamic distribution and structural configuration have satisfactory results. Meanwhile, the method takes both bending and torsion deformation into account. Practical implications The new jig-shape optimization method can be well used for the high aspect ratio wing. Originality/value The new method is an innovation based on the traditional single parameter design method. It is suitable for engineering application.

In order to obtain the non-linear average stress-average strain relationships (σ-ε curves) of damaged structural members under both tensile and compressive loads, the systematical calculations are performed using the non-linear FE analysis (FEA) code, LS-DYNA, and the idealized σ-ε curves of damaged structural members are estimated from FEA results. In addition, by introducing the idealized σ-ε curves of damaged structural members to the simplified calculation program, which is developed by authors and based on the Smith’s method, the residual ultimate strength of damaged hull structures is calculated. The residual ultimate strength of damaged hull structures is also calculated utilizing FEA, the calculation results by the simplified calculation program are compared with the results obtained from FE analyses so as to examine the accuracy of simplified calculation method.

This article aims to shed light on the nonlinear local-distortional-global interactive behavior of web-slotted channel columns by use of the finite element method. The effects of three kinds of initial geometric imperfection based on different distortional buckling mode were evaluated. It indicates that different distortional buckling mode does little difference on the nonlinear interactive buckling behavior of web-slotted channels. Based on the extensive parametric study, some modifications were made to the traditional Effective Width Method for the practical design of web-slotted channel columns undergoing local-distortional-global interactive buckling.
