The open-off cut is used for equipment installation of working face before underground mining, and its sectional size is larger than that of the mining roadway. Therefore, the stability of open-off cut surrounding rock determines whether the panel can be put into operation. To solve the roof instability of open-off cut in the Wanli No.1 coal mine, the roof failure mechanism of open-off cut under weak composite rock strata with thin thickness was studied by field monitoring, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation. First, the characteristics of surrounding rock and the basic law of strata behaviors were obtained by detailed field monitoring. Afterward, FLAC3D numerical simulation and mechanical analysis were used to obtain the main mechanical control parameters of surrounding rock instability, and the existence of a soft interlayer above the roof is the main cause of roof instability. Based on this, the supporting parameters of the open-off cut were optimized and adjusted. The optimized parameters were applied to the adjacent 31207 open-off cut. The engineering practice showed that the optimized supporting parameters have an ideal control effect on roof stability.

Numerical simulation tests were performed on the arch-bolt combined supported mining tunnel through an improved numerical simulation approach. The typical soft rock roadway was took as the background, and the influencing factors such as ground stress level, lateral pressure coefficient, and support type and parameters were considered. The failure mechanism of a semicircular roadway with two straight walls was analyzed; results showed that the arch legs’ inward bending deformation and the arch-rock separation are the breakthrough of the global failure of the supporting system, and rock bolts breakage promoted the failure process. The effects of different controlling measures were analyzed including enlarging the bolt diameter, replacing the conventional bolts with energy-absorbing bolts, and setting arch locking bolts on the arch legs. The field test of the concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) arch-bolt composite support scheme was carried out in a high-stress soft rock roadway, and the results indicate the reliability of the main conclusions.

The stability of the roadway surrounding rock is the key factor of underground mining. Roof subsidence occurred during roadway excavation in the Menkeqing Coal Mine. For the sake of safety, it was decided to stop tunneling project and strengthen roadway support, which resulted in a delay of the construction period and economic damage. To maintain the stability of the surrounding rock, we carried out a systematic study through field monitoring, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation. The deformation and failure law of the surrounding rock, roof structure characteristics, and mechanical properties of the surrounding rock were obtained by field monitoring. The failure characteristics and forms of deep composite roof roadway are further analyzed. The key points of stability of the roadway surrounding rock of soft rock composite laminated roof are obtained by theoretical analysis, i.e., improving the effective stress diffusion efficiency of the anchor cable through the reasonable arrangement of the anchor cable. We use FLAC numerical simulation software to study the influence of different supporting parameters of anchor cable on the stress diffusion in the surrounding rock and put forward the optimal parameters. The optimized support parameters have been applied in the field, and the ideal results have been obtained.

The stability judgement of surrounding rock is one of the key jobs in tunnel engineering. Taking the Erlongdong fault bundle section of Guanjiao Tunnel as the background, the stability of surrounding rock during construction of soft rock tunnel was discussed preliminarily. Based on plastic strain catastrophe theory, and combining numerical results and in-situ data, the limit displacements for stability of surrounding rock were analyzed and obtained corresponding to the in-situ monitoring technology. It shows that the limit displacements obtained corresponds to engineering practice primarily. The plastic strain catastrophe theory under unloading condition provides new thought for ground stability of deep soft rock tunnel and can be good guidance and valuable reference to construction decision making and deformation managing of similar tunnels.

A coal-rock (CR) combined body can be used to simulate structures of coal and rock strata, and its impact-induced failure characteristic conforms more close to engineering practice. Exploring the mechanical properties and impact energy in a CR combined body contributes to better predictions of rock bursts in coal mines. In the study, the mechanical properties of CR combined bodies with four different inclinations (0°, 15°, 30°, and 45°) of structural planes were measured, and also their failure mechanism was analysed. Based on the theory of particle mechanics, a calculation model for impact energy in a CR combined body with inclinations was established and then verified by using monitored acoustic emission (AE) data. The test results showed that inclination affected mechanical properties and failure characteristics of the CR combined body, i.e., the larger the inclination, the lower the strength and impact energy in the CR combined body and the lower the level of damage. The proposed calculation model for impact energy revealed the mechanical essence of energy accumulation and release of a CR combined body, providing a reference for investigating rock burst in coal mines.

In this paper, the mechanical behaviors of pipe roof and bolt of shallow and unsymmetrical tunnel in soft rock are analyzed. Through the finite element software Phase2.0, combined with the geological conditions that construction site often appear, the mechanical behaviors of pipe roof and bolt and surrounding rock in the process of horseshoe highway tunnel construction in the condition that surface is soft rock and underground for the bedrock are analyzed. Research results show that: after tunnel excavation in soft rock, surrounding rock near the tunnel is easy to suffer soft-rock large deformation even failure, which needs to timely support;Due to the impact of the unsymmetrical tunnel, the mechanical behaviors of surrounding rock are unsymmetrical, such as the maximum displacement of tunnel around 0.4 m distant from apex of arch ring, the stress is asymmetrical on both sides of the tunnel arch ring etc; In addition, pipe roof can effectively prevent from the displacement of soft rock strata, improve tunnel strength factor, reduce the plastic zone of surrounding rock. This paper provides theoretical basis for the design of pipe roof and bolt.

With the increasement of mining depth, the strata behavior of the roadway is obvious. As the stress of surrounding rock increases, the bottom of the soft rock roadway becomes deformed easily compressed by its top rock and two sides rock, which leads to the occurrence of the pucking and roadway destruction. Aiming the air inlet roadway destruction phenomenon of -450th level powder magazine in Hebi Zhongtai Mining Co.Ltd, the geological condition and the mechanism of the roadway failure are analysed comprehensively, and the bolt-grout supporting method is also proposed in this paper. At last, the deformation and heaving floor are controlled effectively which is proved by the field monitoring results.

Dalian speed railway tunnel is located in complex soft rock and soil, the road foundation deform and surrounding rock stability control is a concern problem. Along with the unloading process of excavation, surrounding rock moving to inner hole, while exceeding the elastic limitation, the plastic deform and the surrounding rock destroy then occurred. The paper adopted three dimensional elastic-plastic method based on Mohr-Coulomb yielding criterion and carried out numerical simulation of excavation process, in order to analyze and compare the surrounding rock vertical displacement contour, ground surface settlement and damage zone corresponding to different construction sequence. The elastic-plastic numerical method can reflect the damage and destroy character of nonlinear soil material of surrounding rock corresponding to different construction scheme, the simulation result has active guiding meaning for the Dalian speed railway tunnel construction design and dynamic analysis.

Taking +150 inclined shaft going through the soft rock strata at Muchengjian mine as the background, and based on the analysis of the deformation and failure feature of the roadway surrounding rock in the soft rock strata, this paper makes X-Ray Differaction (XRD) phase analysis of the soft rock; using finite difference numerical software FLAC3D, it stimulates and makes comparative analysis of the stress and deformation distribution characteristics of the roadway surrounding rock with bolt support with different intervals, and the support of the high-strength bolt with high pre-tension stress in the inclined shaft through the soft rock strata. The results show that the roadway surrounding rock in the +150 inclined shaft at Muchengjian mine is swelling soft rock prone to softening, degradation and swelling in water, which is bad for the roadway support; different types of rock strata have significant different impact on the stress and deformation of the roadway surrounding rock; for the soft rock roadway, the increased pre-tension stress of the bolt can cause higher compressive stress in the roadway surrounding rock and reduce the tension failure of the surrounding rock;compared with the end anchorage, the full-size anchorage with high pre-tension stress can cause the overlap of the conical compressive stress zone and enhance the roadway overall support.
