Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been widely applied in industries for its low cost, nontoxicity, biodegradability, and renewable advantages. However, its unstable structure may not meet some strong physical and mechanical needs. In order to enhance the performances of the PVA film, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), tannic acid (TA), and chitosan (CS), working as a reinforcer, a crosslinker, and an antimicrobial agent, respectively, were introduced into the PVA matrix. The results indicated that CNCs, TA, and CS were evenly distributed and cohesively incorporated within the PVA matrix, which contributed to the good mechanical properties and thermal stabilities of biocomposite PVA films. Besides, the addition of TA remarkably improved the antiultraviolet and antioxidant capabilities of PVA films, although the light transmittance declined slightly. It was also observed that the pure PVA film and PVA reinforced with CNCs were incapable of protecting against bacteria, while the ones with CS had prominent antibacterial properties to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Overall, the resulting film presented a high potential utilization as a food packaging material for its outstanding physical and mechanical performances.

Composite films containing different amounts of potassium sorbate (KS) were prepared by using fish scale collagen (Col) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), light transmittance, mechanical, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), and the antibacterial properties of the composite films were analyzed. The results showed that the addition of Col significantly reduced the light transmittance of the composite film, but KS had no significant effect on the light transmission. The tensile strength decreased first and then increased with the addition of KS, while the WVTR increased first and then decreased. The composite film exhibited a certain degree of antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus. In addition, we found that ultrasonic treatment reduced the WVTR, and also improved tensile strength and elongation at break of the composite films, but had no significant effect on other properties. The KS/Col/PVA films have the potential to be used as antimicrobial food packaging.

Gum karaya (GK), a natural hydrocolloid, was mixed with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) at different weight ratios and electrospun to produce PVA/GK nanofibers. An 80 : 20 PVA/GK ratio produced the most suitable nanofiber for further testing. Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) were synthesised through chemical reduction of AgNO3(at different concentrations) in the PVA/GK solution, the GK hydroxyl groups being oxidised to carbonyl groups, and Ag+cations reduced to metallic Ag-NPs. These PVA/GK/Ag solutions were then electrospun to produce nanofiber membranes containing Ag-NPs (Ag-MEMs). Membrane morphology and other characteristics were analysed using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and UV-Vis and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The antibacterial activity of the Ag-NP solution and Ag-MEM was then investigated against Gram-negativeEscherichia coliandPseudomonas aeruginosaand Gram-positiveStaphylococcus aureus. Our results show that electrospun nanofiber membranes based on natural hydrocolloid, synthetic polymer, and Ag-NPs have many potential uses in medical applications, food packaging, and water treatment.

AbstractWith the increasing application of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films in the field of food packaging, it is important to improve its mechanical and antibacterial properties. This paper focuses on the preparation of PVA nanocomposite films and how their properties are affected by a silver-loaded nanocellulose solution. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were used as both the carrier and the dispersant of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) prepared using glucose as the reducing agent. Ag+ was stabilized by the many hydroxyl groups located in the CNCs, and then the Ag+ was reduced to AgNPs in situ. After addition of silver-loaded nanocellulose, the tensile strength of the CNC-PVA-AgNP films increased from 47 MPa to 73 MPa, and the nanocomposite films displayed reduced moisture absorption and good antibacterial properties.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have shown remarkable application prospects due to their outstanding chemical and physical properties. In this research, cellulose nanocrystals were isolated from grass waste using alkali, bleaching and acid hydrolysis treatments and further used as nanofiller in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films. The valorisation of the grass waste, as an eco-friendly and sustainable low-cost precursor yields ~23.3% of CNCs. The morphology of the CNCs was observed under transmission electron microscopy and the influence of the grass waste derived CNCs (gw-CNCs) content on the optical transmittance, and water uptake and absorption capacity were investigated by varying the CNCs content in the PVA films. The results showed that the UV transmittance, and water uptake and absorption capacity of the composite films decreased with increasing of gw-CNCs content. The optimum gw-CNCs content for the composite film was determined in this study. The enhanced characteristics contributed to the UV shielding and water absorption properties implies the potential of the gw-CNCs to be used as potential nanofiller for packaging application.

In this study, biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was blended with natural antioxidant tea polyphenols (TPs) to produce PVA/TP nanofiber films by electrospinning. The effects of heat treatment and TP incorporation on the structural and physical properties of the films were then evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that the PVA/TP nanofiber film has a more compact structure and better morphology than PVA alone. In addition, the water resistance was enhanced, and the formation of hydrogen bonds between the TP and PVA molecules increased via the heat treatment. Furthermore, the mechanical, antioxygenic, and antibacterial properties of the nanofiber films were significantly improved (P < 0.05) owing to the incorporation of TP. In particular, when the mass ratio of the PVA/TP was 7:3, the elongation at break (EAB) of the film increased to 105.24% ± 2.87%, and the antioxidant value reached a maximum at 64.83% ± 5.21%. In addition, the antibacterial activity of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) increased to the maximum levels of 82.48% ± 2.12% and 86.25% ± 2.32%, respectively. In summary, our study produced a functional food packaging material that includes preservation with an acceptable bioactivity, ability to keep food fresh, and biodegradability.
