In this paper, an FPGA-based convolutional neural network coprocessor is proposed. The coprocessor has a 1D convolutional computation unit PE in row stationary (RS) streaming mode and a 3D convolutional computation unit PE chain in pulsating array structure. The coprocessor can flexibly control the number of PE array openings according to the number of output channels of the convolutional layer. In this paper, we design a storage system with multilevel cache, and the global cache uses multiple broadcasts to distribute data to local caches and propose an image segmentation method that is compatible with the hardware architecture. The proposed coprocessor implements the convolutional and pooling layers of the VGG16 neural network model, in which the activation value, weight value, and bias value are quantized using 16-bit fixed-point quantization, with a peak computational performance of 316.0 GOP/s and an average computational performance of 62.54 GOP/s at a clock frequency of 200 MHz and a power consumption of about 9.25 W.

We present a sample-efficient image segmentation method using active learning, we call it Active Bayesian UNet, or AB-UNet. This is a convolutional neural network using batch normalization and max-pool dropout. The Bayesian setup is achieved by exploiting the probabilistic extension of the dropout mechanism, leading to the possibility to use the uncertainty inherently present in the system. We set up our experiments on various medical image datasets and highlight that with a smaller annotation effort our AB-UNet leads to stable training and better generalization. Added to this, we can efficiently choose from an unlabelled dataset.

This thesis investigates methods for traffic scene perception with monocular cameras for a basic environment model in the context of automated vehicles. The developed approach is designed with special attention to the computational limitations present in practical systems. For this purpose, three different scene representations are investigated. These consist of the prevalent road topology as the global scene context, the drivable road area and the detection and spatial reconstruction of other road users. An approach is developed that allows for the simultaneous perception of all environment representations based on a multi-task convolutional neural network. The obtained results demonstrate the efficiency of the multi-task approach. In particular, the effects of shareable image features for the perception of the individual scene representations were found to improve the computational performance. This paper develops a hybrid algorithm of adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and regions with convolutional neural network (R-CNN) for stereo vision-based object recognition and manipulation. The stereo camera at an eye-to-hand configuration firstly captures the image of the target object. Then, the shape, features, and centroid of the object are estimated. Similar pixels are segmented by the image segmentation method, and similar regions are merged through selective search. The eye-to-hand calibration is based on ANFIS to reduce computing burden. A six-degree-of-freedom (6-DOF) robot arm with a gripper will conduct experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that can result in hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior. While electroencephalography (EEG) has been used as an auxiliary tool for diagnostic purposes in several recent studies, all EEG channels are treated homogeneously without addressing the dominance of certain channels. The main purpose of this study is to obtain the weight value of each channel as the quantitative representation of influence of each scalp area on the classification of schizophrenia phases, and then to apply the weight values to improve the accuracy of classification. We propose a new convolutional neural network (CNN) structure based on AlexNet to derive weight values as weight layer and classify the samples better. Our results show that the modified CNN structure achieves better performance in terms of time consumption and classification accuracy compared with the original classifier. Also, the visualization of the weight layer in our model indicates possible correlations between scalp areas and schizophrenia conditions, which may benefit future pathological study.
