The optimization of important multidimensional factors is conducive to cognitive engagement, which is a crucial dimension of student engagement and plays a significant role in college students’ learning of the Ideological and Political Theory Course. However, because there are many influencing factors associated with cognitive engagement, the influence mechanism and analysis strategy of this kind of model are relatively complex. In order to solve this research gap, this paper establishes an optimization model affecting Chinese college students’ cognitive engagement in IPTC on the basis of sample collection and investigation. In this process, 4,700 questionnaires were distributed to 47 colleges and universities across the country, and copies were effectively recovered (N = 3992); the effective recovery rate was 84.94%. Cronbach’s alpha of 0.759 indicates that the scale has high reliability and Pearson’s correlation coefficient P  ≤ 0.001 shows that the scale has good validity. The KMO value of 0.703 in the Bartlett sphere test also shows that the scale is suitable for factor analysis. Firstly, according to the method of factor analysis, there are six important factor dimensions affecting college students’ cognitive engagement in the IPTC, namely, attention and motivation factor dimension, behavior and value attainment factor dimension, interest and practicality factor dimension, personality and will factor dimension, evaluation and time factor dimension, and knowledge and strategy factor dimension. Then, through descriptive analysis, it is found that personality and will factor dimension (M = 6.5837) plays a relatively major role while knowledge motivation dimension (M = 6.3505) has a weak impact on cognitive engagement. Finally, from linear regression analysis, there is a significant positive correlation between cognitive engagement and other variables. In addition, undergraduates are slightly lacking motivation in the learning of the course, and vigorously strengthening college students’ cognitive engagement is still necessary, so as to effectively enhance the effectiveness of the IPTC in the future.

ABSTRACT

Toward greater prediction of the perception professional competence in college students.

The aim of this study is designs and validates the Scale of Professional Competence, and determines the predictive power of the variables of teacher´s care, autonomy, self-determined motivation on perceived professional competence. It has carried out two studies. The sample of study 1 included of 274 university students from eight degrees at the University Miguel Hernández of Elche, and the sample of Study 2 included of 431 college students (202 men and 220 women) from nine degrees of the same university. The teacher´s care, perceived autonomy, self-determined motivation and perceived professional competence was measured. The exploratory factor analysis and internal consistency revealed adequate psychometric measures of Professional Competence Scale. In the study 2, the results of confirmatory factor analysis also indicated goodness of this scale. The linear regression analysis was used to determine if teacher´s care, autonomy and self-determined motivation predicted the perceived professional competence. It was predicted 35% of explained variance where self-determined motivation was the most predictive factor the perceived professional competence. So, to achieve greater professional competence, could be used a methodology based on the support of autonomy during the training stage.

Self-concept refers to the domain of self-descriptions that have self-evaluative connotation. Though many researchers embarked in the study of self-concept, and some even developed tests that measured self-concept, majority of these instruments had methodological and theoretical problems due to lack of systematic instrument development and presentation. The objective of the study is to develop a reliable and valid alternative approach to measuring the self in a semi-structured undisguised comics-type test that directly accounts for the way college students consider their choices of superheroes’ traits that characterizes their own. A preliminary survey on self-concept, in a form of open-ended statements was conducted to five hundred ninety-eight (598) college students of selected schools in Manila and Bulacan to know how college students see themselves indicatory of their self-concepts. Results of which, were collated to form the preliminary form. The preliminary form of the SCSS was administered to five hundred ninety-five (595) college students of different universities and colleges. Eighty-eight (88) items under eight (8) components were subjected to item analysis by identifying factors through a series of exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Descriptive results were also calculated, as well as the exact reliability coefficient through split-half and Cronbach’s alpha. For the validity, content analysis was applied using two groups of experts who ascertain the suitability of each item in terms of content, relevance, clarity, appropriateness and their representations. They include three (3) experts who have a long experienced in comics industry and another three (3) experts in the field of college students’ self-concept formation. From the total of 88 items, 30 items were eliminated. However, the items that constitute the final form of the SCSS was concentrated into 55 items under six (6) factors upon post-analysis consideration. Statistical analysis revealed that the experts’ ratings were consistent and has high reliability with a generated r value of .894.The SCSS final form was administered to 809 respondents following the same procedures that were used for the preliminary form. The test scores were subjected to reliability facility, such as Alpha Coefficient and Split-Half, computing the reliability coefficients of the final form. Validity was established through convergent analysis, tested in a sample of 419 respondents who took the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS: 2) Adult Form. The test was found to have high reliability with r = .792.
