A large number of numerical simulations are required to design an energy absorption scheme for train crashworthiness, leading to low design efficiency in the early stage. Based on train collision dynamics theory and the finite element method, a dynamic finite element model of longitudinal train collision is established. According to the model, we studied the acceleration time-history characteristics during the train collision process, obtained the mean-peak ratio coefficient, and determined the calculation formula for the maximum mean acceleration of a longitudinal train collision. Through characteristic analysis of the vehicle acceleration, interface force, and other parameters during a longitudinal train collision, the calculation method of the mean acceleration was improved. The analysis shows that the maximum mean acceleration depends on two stages in the collision process: (1) the coupler action of the head vehicle: the mean-peak ratio coefficient of the head vehicle is 0.7 in this stage, and the mean-peak ratio coefficient of other vehicles is 0.43; (2) the coupler of the collision interface is cut off, and the energy absorption devices of the head vehicle or intermediate vehicle absorb energy; the mean-peak ratio coefficient of the vehicle is 0.93 in this stage. On this basis, a mathematical function is established describing the mean acceleration of the vehicle and the average crushing force of the coupler collapse tube and the energy-absorbing device. The calculation formula is obtained for the maximum mean acceleration of the longitudinal train collision, and the results are compared with the mean acceleration obtained by numerical simulation. The Kruskal–Wallis ANOVA multisample independent nonparametric test was conducted to verify the reliability of the calculation results in the 95% confidence interval. The calculation formula can be used to calculate the maximum mean acceleration in the energy allocation stage of train crashworthiness design to effectively improve the efficiency of train collision energy allocation.

The specific energy absorption of a thin-walled tube can be improved by filler. This study examined the potential use of a cheaper biomass filler, paper scraps, to enhance the energy absorption characteristics of the structure while reducing its cost, compared to that with a traditional filler such as foam material. Quasi-static crushing tests and finite element simulations were performed by using the explicit non-linear finite element software LS-DYNA to determine the improvements to the mean crushing force and specific energy absorption of the steel tube when filled with different densities of paper scraps. The mean crushing force and specific energy absorption of the empty tube, the paper scraps, and thin-walled tube filled with paper scraps were determined, and corresponding numerical simulations were performed. The simulation and test results showed that the impact performance of tube filled with paper scraps was greatly improved when paper scraps density was 0.35 g/cm3. By optimizing paper scraps filling structure, a new structure that could further enhance the specific energy absorption was obtained. The optimal scheme could increase the specific energy absorption of Q345 steel tube by 11.35%.

This article adopts finite element method to model a kind of tower structure of the vertical axis wind turbine and carry out static and modal analysis. The static and dynamic characteristic results of tower in this paper provide reference for optimization design the support structure of wind turbine further.

Assessment of osteoporosis-associated fracture risk during clinical routine is based on the evaluation of clinical risk factors and T-scores, as derived from measurements of areal bone mineral density (aBMD). However, these parameters are limited in their ability to identify patients at high fracture risk. Finite element models (FEMs) have shown to improve bone strength prediction beyond aBMD. This study aims to investigate whether FEM measurements at the lumbar spine can predict the biomechanical strength of functional spinal units (FSUs) with incidental osteoporotic vertebral fractures (VFs) along the thoracolumbar spine. Multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) data of 11 patients (5 females and 6 males, median age: 67 years) who underwent MDCT twice (median interval between baseline and follow-up MDCT: 18 months) and sustained an incidental osteoporotic VF between baseline and follow-up scanning were used. Based on baseline MDCT data, two FSUs consisting of vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs (IVDs) were modeled: one standardly capturing L1-IVD–L2-IVD–L3 (FSU_L1–L3) and one modeling the incidentally fractured vertebral body at the center of the FSU (FSU_F). Furthermore, volumetric BMD (vBMD) derived from MDCT, FEM-based displacement, and FEM-based load of the single vertebrae L1 to L3 were determined. Statistically significant correlations (adjusted for a BMD ratio of fracture/L1–L3 segments) were revealed between the FSU_F and mean load of L1 to L3 (r = 0.814, p = 0.004) and the mean vBMD of L1 to L3 (r = 0.745, p = 0.013), whereas there was no statistically significant association between the FSU_F and FSU_L1–L3 or between FSU_F and the mean displacement of L1 to L3 (p > 0.05). In conclusion, FEM measurements of single vertebrae at the lumbar spine may be able to predict the biomechanical strength of incidentally fractured vertebral segments along the thoracolumbar spine, while FSUs seem to predict only segment-specific fracture risk.

AbstractTo analysis the failure and energy absorption of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) thin-walled square tube, the quasi-static axial compression loading tests are conducted for [±45]3s square tube, and the square tube after test is scanned to further investigate the failure mechanism. Three different finite element models, i.e. single-layer shell model, multi-layer shell model and stacked shell mode, are developed by using the Puck 2000 matrix failure criterion and Yamada Sun fiber failure criterion, and three models are verified and compared according to the experimental energy absorption metrics. The experimental and simulation results show that the failure mode of [±45]3s square tube is the local buckling failure mode, and the energy are absorbed mainly by intralaminar and interlaminar delamination, fiber elastic deformation, fiber debonding and fracture, matrix deformation cracking and longitudinal crack propagation. Three different finite element models can reproduce the collapse behaviours of [±45]3s square tube to some extent, but the stacked shell model can better reproduce the failure mode, and the difference of specific energy absorption (SEA) is minimum, which shows the numerical simulation results are in better agreement with the test results.

Correlation of sharp indentation problems is examined theoretically and numerically. The analysis focuses on elastic-plastic pressure-sensitive materials and especially the case when the local plastic zone is so large that elastic effects on the mean contact pressure will be small or negligible as is the case for engineering metals and alloys. The results from the theoretical analysis indicate that the effect from pressure-sensitivity and plastic strain-hardening are separable at correlation of hardness values. This is confirmed using finite element methods and closed-form formulas are presented representing a pressure-sensitive counterpart to the Tabor formula at von Mises plasticity. The situation for the relative contact area is more complicated as also discussed.

The use of finite element theory and modal analysis theory, the structure of the machine static and dynamic performance analysis and prediction using optimal design method for optimization, the new machine to improve job performance, improve processing accuracy, shorten the development cycle and enhance the competitiveness of products is very important. Selected for three-dimensional CAD modeling software-UG NX4.0 and finite element analysis software-ANSYS to set up the structure of the beam finite element model, and then post on the overall structure of the static and dynamic characteristic analysis, on the basis of optimized static and dynamic performance is more superior double wall structure of the beam. And by changing the wall thickness and the thickness of the inner wall, as well as the reinforcement plate thickness overall sensitivity analysis shows that changes in these three parameters on the dynamic characteristics of post impact. Application of topology optimization methods, determine the optimal structure of the beam ultimately.

The double V-wing honeycomb can be applied in many fields because of its lower mass and higher performance. In this study, the volume, in-plane elastic modulus and unit cell area of the double V-wing honeycomb were analytically derived, which became parts of the theoretical basis of the novel equivalent method. Based on mass, plateau load, in-plane elastic modulus, compression strain and energy absorption of the double V-wing honeycomb, a novel equivalent method mapping relationship between the thickness–width ratio and the basic parameters was established. The various size factor of the equivalent honeycomb model was denoted as n and constructed by the explicit finite element analysis method. The mechanical properties and energy absorption performance for equivalent honeycombs were investigated and compared with hexagonal honeycombs under dynamic impact. Numerical results showed a well coincidence for each honeycomb under dynamic impact before 0.009 s. Honeycombs with the same thickness–width ratio had similar mechanical properties and energy absorption characteristics. The equivalent method was verified by theoretical analysis, finite element analysis and experimental testing. Equivalent honeycombs exceeded the initial honeycomb in performance efficiency. Improvement of performance and weight loss reached 173.9% and 13.3% to the initial honeycomb. The double V-wing honeycomb possessed stronger impact resistance and better load-bearing capacity than the hexagonal honeycomb under impact in this study. The equivalent method could be applied to select the optimum honeycomb based on requirements and improve the efficiency of the double V-wing honeycomb.

Finite element model of track in frog zone is built by vehicle-turnout system dynamics. Considering variation of rail section and elastic support, bending deformation of turnout sleeper, spacer block and sharing pad effects, the track integral rigidity distribution in longitudinal direction is calculated in the model. Vehicle-turnout rigid-flexible coupling model is built by finite element method (FEM), multi-body system (MBS) dynamics and Hertz contact theory. With the regularity solution that different stiffness is applied for rubber pad under sharing pad of different turnout sleeper zone, analysis the variation of vertical acceleration of bogie and wheelset, rail vertical displacement and wheel-rail interaction force, this paper proves that setting reasonable rubber pad stiffness is an efficient method to solve rigidity irregularity problem.

Abstract This paper is to present a method and procedure for modeling the constitutive law of anti-vibration rubber hyperelasticity based on finite element simulations. The hyperelasticity of rubber-like material is briefly summarized first. Then a method and procedure for determining an accurate constitutive law of rubber hyperelasticity from uniaxial tension and compression experiment data is presented and implemented. Due to nonlinear elastic properties of rubber and application limitations of various forms of constitutive law, results of finite element simulation to rubber material experiments show that different forms of constitutive law have to be adopted in different ranges of strain. The proposed procedure to obtain an appropriate constitutive law of rubber hyperelasticity of vibration isolator provides engineers with an effective modeling technique for design and analysis of anti-vibration rubber components. Finally, models of three kinds of rubber materials of a hydraulically damped rubber mount (HDM) are determined by tests and finite element simulations and applied to static and dynamic characteristic analysis of the HDM. The predicted elastic characteristics of the HDM and its major rubber components agree well with experimental data, which demonstrates the practicability and effectiveness of the presented modeling technique to modeling engineering rubber materials in dynamic systems.
