The buckling instability of long slender piles in soft soils is a key consideration in geoengineering design. By considering both the linear shaft friction and linear lateral stiffness of the soft soil, the buckling behaviors of a tapered friction pile embedded in heterogeneous soil are extensively studied. This study establishes and validates an analytical model to formulate the equilibrium equations and boundary conditions and then numerically solves the boundary value problem to obtain the critical buckling load and buckling shape by using software Matlab. The effects of boundary conditions, tapered ratio, stiffness ratio, friction ratio, lateral stiffness, and shaft friction on the buckling behavior of the friction pile are extensively explored. This study demonstrates that the buckling load decreases with the increase of friction ratio of the linear shaft friction. There exists an optimal tapered ratio corresponding to the maximum dimensionless buckling load in the tapered friction pile with linear shaft friction. The result means that the linear shaft friction should be considered in designing the tapered friction piles in heterogeneous soils. The results also have potential applications in the fields of growing of tree roots in soils, moving of slender rods in viscous fluids, penetrating of fine rods in soft elastomers, etc.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to study the buckling behavior of new aircraft material, i.e. glass fiber metal laminated (GFML) plates. Design/methodology/approach The first-order Reissner–Mindlin theory is used in the present finite element formulation to determine the buckling loads of GFML plates. A program is developed in MATLAB for analyzing the effect of different parameters on buckling loads GFML plates. A set of experiments was performed to determine critical buckling loads of GFML plates using universal testing machine INSTRON 8862 and compared with predictions using the numerical model. Findings The effects of various parameters such as aspect ratio, side to thickness ratio, ply orientation and boundary conditions on buckling loads of GFMLs are examined. With the increase of aspect ratio, the reduction in buckling load is observed, while the increase inside to thickness ratio decreases the buckling load of GFML plates. There is a slight variation in buckling load with the increase of ply orientation. The buckling load is significantly influenced by boundary conditions because of restraint at the edges. Practical implications These types of materials are used in lightweight structures such as aircraft, aerospace and military vehicles. The results reported in the present study can be used as design guidelines while designing fiber metal laminated (FML) plated structures. Originality/value For the first time, the authors have studied the buckling behavior of bidirectional woven FML plates using both numerical and experimental techniques.

We show how an energy analysis can be used to derive the equilibrium equations and boundary conditions for an end-loaded variable ply much more efficiently than in previous works. Numerical results are then presented for a clamped balanced ply approaching lock-up. We also use the energy method to derive the equations for a more general ply made of imperfect anisotropic rods and we briefly consider their helical solutions.

The use of granular column is one of the ground improvement methods used for soft soils. This method improves the foundation soils mechanical properties by displacing the soft soil with the compacted granular columns. The columns have high permeability that can accelerate the excess pore water pressure produced in soft soils and increase the undrained shear strength. When it comes to very soft soils, the use of granular columns is not of interest since these soils present no significant confinement to the columns. Here comes the encased columns that receive the confinement from the encasement materials. In this study, the influence of the column installation method on the surrounding soil and the encasement effect on the granular column performance were investigated using numerical analyses and experimental tests. The results show that numerical simulations can reasonably predict the behavior of both the encased column and the surrounding soil.

Soil consolidation testing using an oedometer and rowe cell. Oedometers are often used on clay and soft soils. However, in the development of the rowe cell device, the results of lowering soft soil were better than the oedometer. The advantage of this rowe cell is that it can determine the saturation value of the soil samples tested. The rowe cell tester can measure the pore water pressure at the beginning and end of each consolidation stage. This rowe cell can provide suitable settlement for soft soils. This consolidation test to obtain soil parameters such as Cv and Cc by using the rowe cell tool. After that, from the test results, the two tools were compared.

In the paper presented the behavior of a transversely formed box-girder model subjected to pure bending is discussed, where the deck plating of the model is loaded above the buckling load. The experimental results obtained are in reasonable agreement with theoretical investigations and show the influence of fabrication initiated plate deflections on the buckling and postbuckling behavior of the deck plating clearly. A method is suggested for determining the buckling load of plates having large initial deformations.

The three-dimensional stress-strain state of an isotropic plate loaded on all its surfaces is considered in the article. The initial problem is divided into two ones: symmetrical bending of the plate and a symmetrical compression of the plate, by specified loads. It is shown that the plane problem of the theory of elasticity is a special case of the second task. To solve the second task, the symmetry of normal stresses is used. Boundary conditions on plane surfaces are satisfied and harmonic conditions are obtained for some functions. Expressions of effort were found after integrating three-dimensional stresses that satisfy three equilibrium equations. For a thin plate, a closed system of equations was obtained to determine the harmonic functions. Displacements and stresses in the plate were expressed in two two-dimensional harmonic functions and a partial solution of the Laplace equation with the right-hand side, which is determined by the end loads. Three-dimensional boundary conditions were reduced to two-dimensional ones. The formula was found for experimental determination of the sum of normal stresses via the displacements of the surface of the plate.

A water treatment sludge (WTS) was characterized in order to evaluate if its properties would be suitable for use as liner of earthworks or for strengthening a clay soil. A WTS and a clayey soil was characterized in terms of granulometry, cumulative volumes, specific surface, density, plastic limit, liquid limit, water content, hydraulic conductivity, and characteristics of compaction (optimal water content and dry density). This study aimed to exhibit and evaluate these investigated parameters of WTS, soft soil and mixed proportions between the materials for liners’ material production while evaluating soft soils’ reinforcement feasibility. The results have shown WTS’s contribution with its fine granulometry and compaction characteristics, indicating filling properties and possible feasibility as soft soils additions for liners’ material production while being applicable for soils‘ reinforcements, corroborating with existing literature on the subject. Thus, the currently developed investigation has exposed WTS as a potential addition for these applications while also attending society’s new demands towards a more sustainable future.

The post-buckling behavior of heavy tubular columns following static instability under the combined action of weight, tension/compression at the top, and fluid static pressure forces in the gravity field is studied. A two-dimensional nonlinear small-strain large-deflection model of the column is derived, consisting of an integrodifferential equilibrium equation and two end rotation conditions. The equation of equilibrium is discretized using a finite-element method. An approximate solution valid in the neighborhood of the bifurcation point and an incremental solution are used to determine the secondary equilibrium path. The results of both methods are corrected by Newton-Raphson iteration. Conditions for unstable initial post-buckling behavior and existence of limit points on the secondary equilibrium path are presented. The numerical solution is applied to the problem of the elastica and is found to be in good agreement with the analytical solution. The secondary equilibrium path for a 500-m-long (1640 ft) marine drilling riser is calculated for two sets of boundary conditions and various values of the drilling mud density. The effect of the drilling mud density and the boundary conditions on the riser's post-buckling behavior is discussed.

In this research, investigations are presented of the free vibration of porous laminated rotating circular cylindrical shells based on Love’s shell theory with simply supported boundary conditions. The equilibrium equations for circular cylindrical shells are obtained using Hamilton’s principle. Also, Navier’s solution is used to solve the equations of the cylindrical shell due to the simply supported boundary conditions. The results are compared with previous results of other researchers. The numerical result of this study indicates that with increase of the porosity coefficient the nondimensional backward and forward frequency decreased. Then the results of the free vibration of rotating cylindrical shells are presented in terms of the effects of porous coefficients, porous type, length to radius ratio, rotating speed, and axial and circumferential wave numbers.
