Proper posture provides the best balance and body stability at minimal muscular effort. It is constantly controlled by the central nervous system, which integrates the stimuli from the proprioceptors (deep feeling sensors), vision receptors, and balance receptors through the subcortical structures. The main purpose of the study was to describe single stance stability and its correlation with the degree of scoliosis and trunk rotation among patients suffering from idiopathic scoliosis and in the control group without scoliosis. The study included 80 patients (69 girls and 11 boys) and 40 healthy children without scoliosis (21 girls and 19 boys). The Cobb angle technique was used to determine the magnitude of the deformity. All subjects were divided into three subgroups according to Bogdanov’s classification. Single stance stability with eyes open and eyes closed was assessed with an electronic postural station—Delos Postural Proprioceptive System (DPPS). In case of multiple group comparisons for variables with normal distribution ANOVA with Scheffe, post hoc test was used or Kruskal-Wallis test was used as the nonparametric equivalent. The relationship between the two continuous variables was investigated using either Pearson product-moment correlation or Spearman’s rank correlation. In all these calculations, the statistical significance level was set to p<0.05. The single stance test showed a significant difference between the stability index with eyes open and stability index with eyes closed in study and control groups. The character of these alterations is influenced by the degree of trunk rotation. The degree of scoliosis according to Bogdanov classification does not determine the decrease in stability indexes. In summary, significantly lower values of the stability index during one-leg standing with eyes closed indicated balance impairment, which is mainly connected with inadequate functioning of the proprioceptive system.

Abstract Background The coach attitude impacts the whole mind and body system of a child athlete from emotional and motivational aspects to motor skills like motor coordination. It translates into the ability to control and stabilize posture. The vestibular system plays an important role in this regulation. This system, next to the visual system and mechanoreceptors, is responsible for balance and control during posture transition. Moreover, the vestibular system is influenced by emotional factors. Therefore the authors of this study focused on the changes in the balance stability of children practicing sport after the implementation of the psychological workshops for coaches. Methods Fifty-nine children at the age of 9–12 practicing soccer, art gymnastic and sport gymnastic were divided into two groups. The experimental group consisted of 31 participants and 28 in the control group. Experimental group children were under the influence of the 3 coaches who attended three workshops over 12 weeks period. Control group children were coached by 5 coaches who attended no workshops. Postural stability tests were performed on children before and after the workshops. Results The statistically significant changes were observed in selected parameters of children’s balance stability after the experiment. The significant difference between the experimental and control group in Overall Stability Index (OSI) (p < 0.0002), Anterior–Posterior Stability Index (AP) (p < 0.01), Medial–Lateral Stability Index (ML) (p < 0.01) with eyes open were observed after the experiment. The results show a significant deterioration in control group contrary to the experimental group where the improvement trend was observed. Moreover, the difference between the groups was observed in OSI parameter (p < 0.005) with eyes closed after the experiment. Conclusion The results obtained by the authors of the current study may support the thesis that educating coaches allows for better results in postural stability of child’s athletes. Nevertheless, this thesis requires further research, with particular emphasis on the age and gender of young athletes.

Introduction. Vibration disease (VD) is one of the leading occupational diseases. One of the manifestations of this disease when exposed to general vibration may be a violation of balance.The aim of the study is to identify the imbalance and the causes of their occurrence in patients with vibration disease.Materials and methods. 3 groups of patients were examined. The first group consisted of 50 patients diagnosed with VD associated with combined exposure to local and general vibration (age 48.7±3.1 years); the second group consisted of 50 patients diagnosed with VD associated with exposure to local vibration (age 48.9+2.8 years); the control group consisted of 50 relatively healthy men not in contact with vibration (age 49.1+2.5 years). Survey on electronic stabilometer ST–150 (Biomera, Russia). Patients performed the Romberg test standing barefoot vertically on a stabilometric platform with a “European” stop position. Statistical processing of the results was carried out using the software package “Statistica 10.0” (StatSof, USA, 2011). Methods of descriptive statistics included estimation of median, lower and upper quartiles. The statistical significance of the differences was determined using the nonparametric Wilkinson method. Differences were considered statistically significant at p<0.05.Results. In the analysis of the obtained stabilometric parameters found that in the first group of patients marked imbalance.Moreover, in comparison with the second group and the control group in the phase with eyes closed, patients are more difficult to maintain a given posture, which increases the length of statokinesigram (p=0.02 and p=0.005), increasing the speed of movement of the center of pressure (p=0.03 and p=0.004) and the square of the deviation of the center of pressure (p=0.03 and p=0.004). When closing the eyes, patients put more effort to maintain balance, which affects the rate of mechanical work (p=0.001 and p=0.001). When comparing the second group with the control group, no statistically significant difference was found in the main stabilometric indicators.Conclusions: In the group of patients with VD associated with the combined effects of local and general vibration, marked (64%) and moderate (36%) postural disorders, especially in the phase of closed eyes. In the group of patients with VS associated with local vibration exposure and in the control group, imbalance was detected in 10% and 6%, respectively. The leading role in the occurrence of postural disorders in patients with VD, associated with the combined effects of local and general vibration, plays the formation of a focus of stagnant excitation in the centers of vibration sensitivity. In the future, the pulse can spread to nearby centers of pain, temperature sensitivity and proprioception, which contributes to the emergence of lower limb polyneuropathy and impaired stability in patients with vibration disease.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a resistive tubing kick training protocol on postural sway in uninjured collegiate wrestlers. An experimental group (n= 10) performed a progressive resistive tubing kick training protocol three times per week for 6 weeks. A control group (n= 9) performed no resistive tubing training during the 6 weeks. Postural sway (stability index) was assessed before and after the 6-week training period. ANOVAs demonstrated no significant interactions, although significant main effects were found for group and eye condition. The experimental group demonstrated less postural sway than the control group regardless of training, and postural sway was greater with the eyes closed than with the eyes open. Resistive tubing kick training does not significantly improve postural sway in healthy collegiate wrestlers. Further research should examine the potential benefits of proprioceptive training using a greater intensity of training and/or using subjects who have a greater potential for improvement.

Techniques to quantify postural stability usually rely on the evaluation of only two variables, that is, two coordinates of COP. However, by using three variables, that is, three components of acceleration vector, it is possible to describe human movement more precisely. For this purpose, a single three-axis accelerometer was used, making it possible to evaluate 3D movement by use of a novel method, convex polyhedron (CP), together with a traditional method, based on area of the confidence ellipse (ACE). Ten patients (Pts) with cerebellar ataxia and eleven healthy individuals of control group (CG) participated in the study. The results show a significant increase of volume of the CP (CPV) in Pts or CG standing on foam surface with eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC) after the EC phase. Significant difference between Pts and CG was found in all cases as well. Correlation coefficient indicates strong correlation between the CPV and ACE in most cases of patient examinations, thus confirming the possibility of quantification of postural instability by the introduced method of CPV.

ABSTRACT Background: Migraine is one of the most frequent and incapacitating headaches, with a high degree of impairment of balance control and postural stability. Objective: To investigate the effects of episodic and chronic migraine on postural balance through using static and dynamic balance tests. Methods: The study included 32 chronic and 36 episodic migraine patients and a control group of 36 healthy volunteers. Right/left single-leg static and dynamic balance tests were performed in each group with eyes open and closed using a posturographic balance platform (Techno-body Prokin). Results: No significant difference was found among episodic and chronic migraine patients and control subjects with regard to eyes-open and eyes-closed area values (eyes-open area values: p=0.559, p=0.414 and p=0.906; eyes-closed area values: p=0.740, p=0.241 and p=0.093, respectively). However, the area values were significantly higher in episodic and chronic migraine patients than in the control group, which indicates that migraine patients may have lower balance performance. Perimeter values were relatively higher which supports the idea that migraine patients have lower balance performance. Additionally, the average number of laps was significantly lower among migraine patients than in the control group, which also implies that migraine patients may have lower balance performance. Conclusion: Although no significant difference was detected between chronic and episodic migraine patients and the control group and between chronic and episodic migraine patients with regard to balance performance, chronic migraine patients seemed to have relatively lower performance than episodic migraine patients. Further studies with larger numbers of patients are needed, to investigate the relationship between these parameters and balance.

    The current research aims to identify (the effect of using a proposed method in teaching physics at the skill of the experiment at the fourth-grade science students and their application of physical principles. The researcher adopted the experimental design of the two groups. The number of students in the research sample reached (59) students of the fourth grade of the secondary school of Ibn al-Fadr under the General Directorate for the education of Diyala / Khalis for the academic year 2016-2017 divided between two divisions, (B) and (B) to represent the experimental group studied in the proposed method. The researcher also constructed the skill test level for the physics subject of (10) paragraphs , And verified the authenticity of its content, presented to a group of specialists , And was applied to a sample to ascertain the veracity of the vertebrae, and was confirmed by the stability of the equation Koderrichardson 20, and was a coefficient of stability (0.72), and was confirmed the strength of discriminatory paragraphs, and the coefficient of difficulty, and the effectiveness of alternatives.  The researcher constructed the test applied to the physical principles of physics consisting of (30) objective paragraphs of the type of multiple choice, and verified the validity of its content, presented to a group of specialists, and then applied to a sample survey to ensure the clarity of paragraphs, The coefficient of stability was 0.77, and the discriminant force of its vertebrates, the coefficient of difficulty, and the effectiveness of its substitutions were determined. Using the t-test, with the ends of two independent samples, the null hypothesis was tested. - There is a statistically significant difference between the grades of the experimental group students who studied in the proposed method and the students of the control group who studied in the usual way and for the benefit of the experimental group in the measure of application of the physical principles. - There is a difference of statistical significance between the grades of students of the experimental group who studied in the proposed method and students of the control group who studied in the usual way and for the benefit of the experimental group in the scale of the skill of conducting the experiment. 1- Adopting the proposed method in teaching the physics subject and inserting it into curriculum syllabus and teaching methods in the faculties of education. 2 - Conduct similar studies in several materials and stages to identify their impact in other variables.

Category: Ankle Introduction/Purpose: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is a disease entity commonly seen after ankle ligament injury. It is divided into mechanical ankle instability (MAI) and functional ankle instability (FAI), with different pathological conditions. The purpose of this study was to test the balancing ability of MAI and FAI patients. Methods: 30 CAI patients and 10 normal subjects were included according to the injury history, clinical symptom and MRI presentation. Stress tests were given under fluoroscopy to find out those with mechanical instability in CAI patients. Among them there were 18 MAI and 12 FAI patients. All patients were tested on a customized balancing ability assessment system developed by Shanghai Jiaotong University. Subjects were asked to stand on the platform for 30 seconds for both feet, 10 seconds for single foot, with eyes open. And 30 seconds for both feet, 5 seconds for single foot, with eyes closed. Each condition was tested for 3 trials and results were averaged. Parameters of balance like the swaying trajectory length and speed at both medial-lateral and anterior-posterior directions, the trajectory length per unit were obtained. Results were compared among three groups. Results: The MAI group presented significantly greater imbalance in both medial-lateral and anterior-posterior directions compared with that in the control group while standing on the single diseased foot, with eyes open or closed. While in the FAI group, no significant difference was found in postural sway compared with that in the control group. The MAI group presented significantly greater imbalance in both medial-lateral and anterior-posterior directions than the FAI group while standing on the single diseased foot with eyes open or closed. No significant difference in balancing was found of the contralateral ankle in the two groups. Conclusion: The balancing ability of MAI patients was impaired and then make them vulnerable to falling. Thus either balance training program or reconstructive surgery is needed to restore the balancing ability in those patients.

<p><strong>Purpose</strong>: The objective of the study is to evaluate the balance disorders in patients with surgical treatment of ankle fractures with the use of Sunlight Tetrax. <strong>Methods</strong>:The subjects in the study were 20 patients with ankle fractures treated surgically(after six months of the procedure)and the control group comprised 21 healthy subjects. Two groups compare the general stability index (ST), the high frequency of Fourier transformation (F5-F6),the body weight distribution index (WDI) ,synchronicity of foot under natural standing on solid surface with eyes opened and natural standing on solid surface with eyes closed and the fall index (FI). <strong>Results</strong>: The fall index (FI) and the stability index (ST) under natural standing on solid surface with eyes opened of two groups were statistically significant differences. The balance of patients with ankle fracture after 6 months with surgical procedure is significantly poorer than healthy subjects. </p>

Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the possible associations among biochemical parameters that may be correlated with the possible mechanisms of iron metabolism in healthy children with normal body mass index (BMI), along with morbid obese (MO) children with and without metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: To this end, children aged 6-18 years with no history of any acute or chronic diseases were selected as the population of this prospective case-control study. Thirty MO children (with BMI higher than 99th percentile and without MetS findings), 28 MO children (with BMI higher than 99th percentile and with MetS), and 30 healthy children (with BMI values between 15th and 85th percentiles) participated in the study. Then, anthropometric measurements were recorded, followed by performing the complete blood count and serum iron profile. In addition, ferritin, transferrin, hepcidin, irisin, ferroportin, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), WISP1, and PTP1/fortilin levels were measured using ELISA. Finally, statistical analyses were performed and P<0.05 was considered as the level of statistical significance. Results: Significant differences were obtained among the groups regarding anthropometric measurements, blood pressures, triacylglycerols, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Further, there was a tendency toward an iron deficiency in both MO groups while an increase in ferritin levels was significant in the MetS group. However, BDNF, hepcidin, and ferroportin demonstrated no significant difference among the groups. Eventually, although the above-mentioned parameters were statistically insignificant, fortilin levels indicated a gradual decrease whereas irisin levels represented an increase from control group toward morbid obesity and MetS. Conclusion: In our study, obesity severity and the tendency toward iron deficiency were in accordance with each other. Particularly, different WISP-1 levels in the groups may help predict future complications, along with its use in diagnosing obesity.

Background and Study Aim. Although Kinesiotape is widely used by athletes, information about its effect is unclear. Its effect on postural control might directly affect an athlete's performance. In this study, it is aimed to find out whether ankle Kinesiotaping in taekwondo athletes affects postural control. Material and Methods. Twenty-four healthy university students – taekwondo athletes (12 females, 12 males) were included in the study voluntarily (Age 21.00 ± 1.53 years; height 173.33 ± 7.29 cm; body weight 63.41 ± 9.41 kg). Kinesiotape was carried out to the dominant ankle of the participants. Kinesiotape was applied supportively to peroneus longus, peroneus brevis, and tibiofibular ligament. All participants were taken to postural control measurements twice with Kinesiotape (KT) and without KT. Postural control was measured using the Biodex Balance System with eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC). Overall Stability Index (OSI), anterior-posterior sway (AP) and medio-lateral sway (ML) scores were used in the evaluation of postural control. Wilcoxon test was used to compare balance scores under EO condition, and the t-test was used for dependent groups to compare balance scores under EC condition. Results. In EO condition, no significant difference was found between OSI, AP, and ML scores of the taekwondo athletes with KT and without KT (p > 0.05). In EC condition, no significant difference was found between OSI, AP, and ML scores of male taekwondo athletes with KT and without KT (p > 0.05). It was found that Kinesiotape in EC condition decreased OSI and AP sway scores in female taekwondo athletes (p < 0.05). Conclusions. It was determined that ankle Kinesiotaping of taekwondo athletes did not change the postural balance in EO condition. In EC condition it did not change the postural sway of male taekwondo athletes, but it improved the postural control performances of female taekwondo athletes.
