A copper-nickel slag-based alkali-activated cementing material (CNSCM) for backfilling was prepared using copper-nickel slag as a raw material and sodium silicate (SS) as an activating agent. The effects of SS content (6%, 8%, and 10%) and curing humidity on the compressive strength of CNSCM were investigated using an electronic universal testing machine. Types of hydration products and microstructures were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that by increasing the SS content, the compressive strength of the CNSCM exhibited an increasing trend, followed by a decreasing trend. The optimal content was 8%. Humidity was identified as another factor affecting compressive strength, which reached 17 MPa after curing for 28 d under standard conditions. A decrease in humidity could improve the compressive strength of the material. The main hydration reaction products of the CNSCM were C-S-H gel, Fe (OH)2 or Fe (OH)3 gel, and CaCO3.

TiC/TiB2-FeNiCr composite reinforced by TiC and TiB2 composite ceramic particles was successfully in-situ synthesized using thermite reaction. The effects of Ti content in the raw material on the microstructure and properties of the composite were studied. The microstructure was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The hardness, compressive strength and wear resistance were tested using the Vickers indentation method (HXZ-1000), mechanical testing machine (SANS5105) and the high temperature wear tester (HT-600), respectively. The results show that the composite is mainly consisted of TiC, TiB2, Cr7C3, α-FeNiCr and NiAl. The content of TiC and TiB2 is increased with the Ti content. The hardness and compressive strength of the composite is increased first and then decreased. They attain the maximum value at about 8.0wt%Ti. The hardness and the compressive strength of the composite are 1313.25HV and 2725.57MPa at 8.0% Ti. Also the wear resistance of the composite is good, and the weight wear loss at 8.0% Ti is nearly fifth of the mass loss of steel.

Abstract This study discusses the use of fly ash waste from coal burning on the manufacture of PCC (Portland composite cement) at PT. XYZ Lampung. The purpose of this research is to look at the technical studies and the efficiency of raw materials in the use of fly ash in cement making, in this case PCC cement (Portland Composite Cement). The steps taken in analyzing the data in this study were viewed from a technical aspect by means of a physical test, namely the cement compressive strength test at the age of 3 days, 7 days, and 28 days using the Compression Testing Machine. This test was conducted to see the comparison of the compressive strength of PCC cement using limestone and fly ash as raw materials, then calculate the difference in raw material costs in the year before and after the replacement of limestone with fly ash. The results showed that cement with the addition of fly ash after 3 days, 7 days and 28 days had an increased compressive strength value, which increased 21.69%, 16.07% and 8.05% respectively of the compressive strength of cement using limestone. The use of fly ash as a substitute for limestone has an effect on the cost of raw materials, where the difference between the cost of raw materials in 2019 and the cost of raw materials in 2018 is Rp. 39,440,952,074.

Abstract The search for alternative alumosilicates source for production of alkali activated materials (AAM) is intensively researched. Wide spread of natural materials such as clays and waste materials are one of potential alternatives. In this research AAM was made from local waste brick made of red clay and calcined low-carbonate illite clay precursor and its properties evaluated. Waste silica gel containing amorphous silica from fertilizer production plant was proposed as additional raw material. 6 M and 7 M NaOH alkali activation solutions were used to obtain AAM. Raw materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, laser particle size analyser, DTA/TG. Raw illite clay was calcined at a temperature of 700 to 800 °C. Waste brick was ground similar as raw clay and powder was obtained. Replacement of red clay with silica gel from 2–50 wt.% in mixture composition was evaluated. Results indicate that the most effective activator was 6 M NaOH solution and AAM with strength up to 13 MPa was obtained. Ground brick had the highest strength results and compressive strength of AAM reached 25 MPa. Silica gel in small quantities had little effect of AAM strength while significant strength reduction was observed with the increase silica gel content. The efflorescence was observed for samples with silica gel.

The shrinkage of alkali-activated slag (AAS) is obviously higher than ordinary Portland cement, which limited its application in engineering. In this study, the effects of NaAlO2 in mitigating drying shrinkage and autogenous shrinkage of AAS were studied. To further understand the shrinkage mechanism, the hydration products and microstructures were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption approaches. As the partial substitution rate of NaAlO2 for Na2SiO3 increased, the drying shrinkage and autogenous shrinkage reduced significantly. The addition of NaAlO2 could slow down the rate of hydration reaction and reduce the porosity, change the pore diameter and the composition of generated paste and cause more hydrotalcite and tetranatrolite generated—which contributed to reduced shrinkage. Additionally, raising the Na2O content rate caused obvious differences in drying shrinkage and autogenous shrinkage. As the Na2O content elevated, the drying shrinkage decreased and autogenous shrinkage increased. A high Na2O content would cause complete hydration reactions and provoke high autogenous shrinkage. However, incomplete hydration reactions left more water in the paste, and the evaporated water dramatically influenced drying shrinkage. The results indicate that addition of NaAlO2 could greatly mitigate the drying shrinkage and autogenous shrinkage of AAS.

The tailings and slag based geopolymers was prepared by sodium silicate, sodium hydroxide alkali-activated tailings and slag. The compressive strength in 7 d under different raw material proportion were tested. The result indicated that tailings and slag based geopolymers has high compressive strength . As the tailings in slag is 80%, the compressive strength in 7d can reach 45.10 MPa . As the Na2SiO3 to NaOH ratio is 0.5, the compressive strength in 7d can reach 63.79 MPa. As the NaOH and sodium silicate concentration in the solution is 35%, the compressive strength in 7d can reach 38.35 MPa respectively; As the curing period is 14 d , the compressive strength can reach 71.25 MPa. As the steel scoria in solid is 20%, the compressive strength in 7d can reach 61.86 MPa respectively.

This paper investigated the effect of blast furnace slags (BFS) characteristics on the properties achievement after being alkali activated. The physical and chemical characteristics of BFS were determined by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and laser granulometry. Multi-technical characterizations using calorimetry, XRD, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetry (TG-DTG), scanning electron microscope (SEM), nitrogen sorption and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) were applied to give an in-depth understanding of the relationship between the reaction products, microstructure and BFS characteristics. The test results show that the microstructure and mechanical properties of alkali activated blast furnace slags (BFS) highly depend on the characteristics of BFS. Although the higher content of basic oxide could accelerate the hydration process and result in higher mechanical properties, a poor thermal stabilization was observed. On the other hand, with a higher content of Fe, the hydration process in alkali activated BFS2 lasts for a longer time, contributing to a delayed compressive strength achievement.

AbstractThe potassium (K) and sodium (Na) elements in banana are needed for hydration reaction that can enhance the strength properties of concrete. This research aims (a) to determine the material engineering properties of banana skin ash (BSA) and concrete containing BSA, (b) to measure the strength enhancement of concrete due to BSA, and (c) to identify optimal application of BSA as supplementary cement materials (SCM) in concrete. The BSA characterization were assessed through X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Blaine’s air permeability. The workability, compressive strength, and microstructures of concrete containing BSA were analysed using slump test, universal testing machine (UTM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). A total of 15 oxides and 19 non-oxides elements were identified in BSA with K (43.1%) the highest and Na was not detected. At 20 g of mass, the BSA had a higher bulk density (198.43 ± 0.00 cm3) than ordinary Portland cement (OPC) (36.32 ± 0.00 cm3) indicating availability of large surface area for water absorption. The concrete workability was reduced with the presence of BSA (0% BSA: > 100 mm, 1% BSA: 19 ± 1.0 mm, 2%: 15 ± 0.0 mm, 3% BSA: 10 ± 0.0 mm). The compressive strength increased with the number of curing days. The concrete microstructures were improved; interfacial transition zones (ITZ) decreased with an increase of BSA. The optimal percentage of BSA obtained was at 1.25%. The established model showed significant model terms (Sum of Squares = 260.60, F value = 69.84) with probability of 0.01% for the F-value to occur due to noise. The established model is useful for application in construction industries.

A new experimental porous glass ceramic coating for dental implants was prepared with a new formula consisted of a sintered glass ceramic based on alumina, silica glass and boron trioxide. The resultant sintered objects were anodized by one step anodization method at a constant potential of 40V and at a temperature of 22°C. X-ray diffraction analysis was performed to investigate the phase structure of the new material in addition to SEM investigation for surface texture and pores size and distribution. The new experimental material was subjected to failure under universal testing machine for compressive strength. The results showed a promising material to use as coating for implants as X-ray diffraction exhibited an amorphous phase diagram for the material structure whereas SEM results revealed that the pores in the specimens prepared by anodization method were highly ordered and the mean average pore size was 6.5-8.5 nm. The compressive strength test showed that the test-porous glass ceramic coating has a mean numerical value of up to 7.5 MPa which indicates an ambitious result for the new material.

Extensive research into alkali-activated slag as a green gel material to substitute for cement has been done because of the advantages of low-carbon dioxide emissions and recycling of industrial solid waste. Alkali-activated slag usually has good mechanical properties, but the too fast setting time restricted its application and promotion. Changing the composition of alkaline activator could optimize setting time, usually making it by adding sodium carbonate or sodium sulfate but this would cause insufficient hydration reaction power and hinder compressive strength growth. In this paper, the effect of sodium aluminate dosage as an alkaline activator on the setting time, fluidity, compressive strength, hydration products, and microstructures was studied through experiments. It is fair to say that an appropriate amount of sodium aluminate could obtain a suitable setting time and better compressive strength. Sodium aluminate provided enough hydroxyl ions for the paste to promote the hydration reaction process that ensured obtaining high compressive strength and soluble aluminium formed precipitate wrapped on the surface of slag to inhibit the hydration reaction process in the early phase that prolonged setting time. The hydration mechanism research found that sodium aluminate played a key role in the formation of higher cross-linked gel hydration products in the late phase of the process. Preparing an alkali-activated slag with excellent mechanical properties and suitable setting time will significantly contribute to its application and promotion.

In this paper, calcium phosphate cement (CPC) was prepared with tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP)/dicalcium phosphate anhydrous (DCPA) system as solid phase and phosphate buffered solution (PBS) as liquid phase, then silk fibroin (SF) was added into CPC to form silk fibroin/calcium phosphate composite. To study the effect of SF on the properties of composite, different mass fraction of SF was added into the composite. The surface morphology was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope. The setting time was investigated by ISO Cement Standard Consistency Instrument. The structure of the composite was studied by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Mechanical properties of samples were tested by Instron Universal Testing Machine. The results showed that the particles of SF could be seen obviously in the surface of all composite, and acicular crystal of hydroxyapatite (HA) was formed in the hardening body of both the composite and the pure CPC. The acicular crystal of HA derived from composite with SF appeared to be thinner. The setting times of the composites were all between 9 to 15min. Compared to pure CPC, the compressive strength and work-of-compressive of composites were all improved. The compressive strength of the composite with 1% SF increased obviously.
