Introduction. An open fracture refers to a break in the skin, which is exposed to microbial contamination and eventually leads to most complicated infections. X-rays can kill bacteria by causing irreversible DNA damage. Objective. To confirm the role of X-ray exposure in treating infected wound fractures at the lower limb and determine X-ray exposure times. Methods. Fifty-one wound swabs were collected from patients with infected open fractures at the lower limb with grade II, IIIA, B, and C according to the Gustilo and Anderson classification system and then cultured. The bacterial isolates were identified by biochemical tests and the VITEK-2 System and tested against several antibiotics. The X-ray exposure was done for open fractures by radiography (at kV133 and 5 milliambers). Results. The higher isolation rate was recorded for Staphylococcus aureus with 21 (41.2%) isolates, and most of them (20, 95.2%) were isolated from grade II fractures. The isolation rate of Gram-negative bacteria was 25.5% for Escherichia coli with 13 isolates, 19.6% for Pseudomonas aeruginosa with 10 isolates, and 13.7% for Klebsiella pneumoniae with 7 isolates, most of which were isolated from grade III fractures. The isolation rate of P. aeruginosa was 60% (6 isolates) from grade IIIA and 71.4% (5 isolates) from grade IIIB for K. pneumoniae, while for E. coli it was 69.2% (9 isolates) from grade IIIC. All the bacterial isolates recorded high levels of antibiotic resistance against most tested antibiotics. Wound cultures of grade II fractures appeared sterile after the first X-ray exposure, and these wounds were infected with S. aureus or P. aeruginosa. However, cultures of grade IIIA and IIIB fractures appeared sterile after the second X-ray exposure for all isolated bacteria, except for S. aureus (grade IIIA fractures) (after the third X-ray exposure). Grade IIIC fractures showed sterile culture after the third X-ray exposure for wounds infected with P. aeruginosa and E. coli. Conclusions. The study concluded that X-ray exposure showed high effectiveness in treating infected open fractures.

Understanding the role of metal cluster composition in determining catalytic selectivity and activity is of major interest in heterogeneous catalysis. The electron microscope is well established as a powerful tool for ultrastructural and compositional characterization of support and catalyst. Because the spatial resolution of x-ray microanalysis is defined by the smallest beam diameter into which the required number of electrons can be focused, the dedicated STEM with FEG is the instrument of choice. The main sources of errors in energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDS) are: (1) beam-induced changes in specimen composition, (2) specimen drift, (3) instrumental factors which produce background radiation, and (4) basic statistical limitations which result in the detection of a finite number of x-ray photons. Digital beam techniques have been described for supported single-element metal clusters with spatial resolutions of about 10 nm. However, the detection of spurious characteristic x-rays away from catalyst particles produced images requiring several image processing steps.

The discovery of x-rays, one of the most beautiful experiments ever carried out, generates numerous controversies and these, in turn, can trigger a series of counterproductive information regarding not only the History of Science but also the teaching  activity. The aim of this article is to resolve these controversies concerning what ocurred and highlight the important role of the German physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, highlighting not only his genius but, especially in this case in particular, his condition of second-order observer. It is not uncommon to find information in various media refering to this discovery under the claim that it was the result of a fortuitous event, and this denotes a profound lack of knowledge about the facts or a disrespect for the renowned discoverer. Such allegations about the event depreciate the extraordinary discovery that impacts humanity, from the deed  to the present. Thus, through a brief historical reconstruction, it was tried to present here what had happened judiciously. With this respect, the brilliant scientist is given the status of a second-rate observer, from the philosophical point of view. This condition resonates with the diachronic aspect of the History of Science, according to the perspective presented here, and it is also supported by the time taken by the discoverer from the beginning of his research until the end of it. Keywords: X-Ray. History of Science. ResumoO descobrimento dos raios-x, um dos mais belos experimentos já realizados, gera inúmeras controvérsias e essas, por sua vez, podem desencadear uma série de informações contraproducentes no tangente não só a História da Ciência como também à atividade de ensino. O presente artigo tem como objetivo dirimir tais polêmicas com respeito ao ocorrido e destacar o importante papel do físico alemão Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, destacando não só sua genialidade, mas sobretudo, neste caso em particular, a sua condição de observador de segunda ordem. Não é raro encontrar em diversos meios de comunicação informações com respeito a referida descoberta sob a alegação de que a mesma fora fruto de um caso fortuito e isso denota profundo desconhecimento sobre os fatos, ou então, desrespeito com o renomado descobridor. Tais alegações sobre o sucedido depreciam a descoberta extraordinária que impacta a humanidade, desde o feito até a atualidade. Assim, através de breve reconstrução histórica, buscou-se aqui apresentar o ocorrido criteriosamente. Com este respeito passa-se a atribuir ao brilhante cientista a condição de observador de segunda ordem, do ponto de vista filosófico. Tal condição encontra ressonância no aspecto diacrônico da História da Ciência, segundo a perspectiva aqui apresentada e está amparada, também, pelo tempo empreendido pelo descobridor desde o início de sua pesquisa até a finalização da mesma. Palavras-chave: Raios-x. Escherichia colitRNAN6-threonylcarbamoyladenosine dehydratase (TcdA), previously called CsdL or YgdL, was overproduced and purified fromE. coliand crystallized using polyethylene glycol 3350 as a crystallizing agent. X-ray diffraction data were collected to 2.70 Å resolution under cryoconditions using synchrotron X-rays. The crystals belonged to space groupP21, with unit-cell parametersa= 65.4,b= 96.8,c= 83.3 Å, β = 111.7°. According to the Matthews coefficient, the asymmetric unit may contain up to four subunits of the monomeric protein, with a crystal volume per protein mass (VM) of 2.12 Å3 Da−1and 42.1% solvent content.

Purpose: To analyze the waste factors of rejected X-rays films. Methodology: Descriptive and analytical prospective study from 1 January to 30 June 2017 carried out in the department of radiology and medical imaging of the Campus University Hospital of Lomé in Togo. Results: 4912 patients had received 5630 radiographic incidences, including 3288 (58.4%) on the analogy and 2342 (41.5%) on the digital. The reject rate was 12.5%. The vast majority of the X-rays films, 682 (96.9%) were rejected by the radiographers themselves just after development. The resumption frequency ranged from one repeat (550 X-rays films, or 78%) to 4 repeats (8 X-rays films, or 1%). Almost all of the rejected films, 702 (99.7%) came from the analogical room. Chest X-ray was the incidence with more rejection in 33.9% followed by pelvic and lower limb incidences in 21% of cases. More than 2/3 of the rejected films, 473 (67.2%), came from the students' act. The causes of the rejection were mainly centering (25.5%), underexposure (20.17%) and overexposure (12.93). The financial loss caused by the scrap of X-rays films amounted to about 418800F CFA or 638.5 €. Conclusion: Strengthening communication between radiographers and radiologists is necessary to avoid unnecessary repeats of patient’s radiographs.

Hunter, Staub and Lunsford (Arch, of path. A. Lab. Med., Vol. 6, No. 5, 1928) observed a case when a patient with depressive-manic psychosis for the purpose of suicide introduced through the skin of the sixth intercostal space along the left nipple line an aluminum tube from the mouthpiece, 8.9 cm long, and 4 mm in diameter. Within two days, there were no subjective or objective symptoms, and only starting from the third day there was a moderate increase in temperature and an increase in pulse and respiration, which lasted until death, which occurred only on the 9th day, suddenly for 10 with the phenomena of sharp cyanosis , increased heart rate and respiration. An intravital X-ray examination did not reveal any foreign body in either the chest cavity or the heart. An autopsy showed that the tube passed over the apex of the heart through the wall of the left ventricle into its cavity and from there, through the posterior wall, entered into the left lung. There was a slight hemorrhage in the cardiac shirt and fresh fibrinous pericarditis. The authors explain the negative X-ray study by the light permeability of aluminum for all rays, with the exception of the shortest X-rays.

The present study is conducted to in restigate the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the impact of ultraviolet on the bacterial isolates under study and the resistance of these isolates to ultraviolet are studied in comparison to two standard isolates ( E . coli and Staphylococcus aureus ) which are considered sensitive to ultraviolet . The natures of the resistance of the isolates, under study, are also being investigated against the different antibiotics. The isolates are subjected to a test to examine their sensitivity to (12) types of antibiotics used routinely in the treatment of various infection of these bacteria. They are (streptomycin , cephalothin ,Gentamycin , cefotaxime ,nitrofurantion ,ampicillin, amoxicillin, rifampin, lincomycin, tetracycline, erythromycin and ciprofloxacin ).The lowest concentration installer ( MIC ) is also testified in accordance with six types of antibiotics (streptomycin, cefotaxime , rifampin , nitrofurantion , Gentamycin , amoxicillin ).The biologic effectiveness of the overlap between the bacterial isolates , under study, is examined against four bacteria (klebseilla pneumonia , Staphylococcus aureus , Enterobacter , Proteus ) The result of using the ultraviolet with different wavelength show the ability of the five local isolates used to resistance of ultraviolet reaching (180 s.) in comparison to the isolates E.coli and staph. aureus in which the ratio of killing is %100 at a time of exposing 40 , 60 sec. respectively. The results indicated that the five local bacterial isolates have high resistance to the most tested antibiotics, It is shouted that all of them have resistance to (erythromycin , tetracycline , lincomycin , Gentamycin ) but they are sensitive towards antibiotic streptomycin . as for the other antibiotics , over can find that the isolates are varied of them for being resisting or sensitive towards them .The results of testing the inhabited effectiveness of the five bacterial isolates towards some other bacterial isolates show the efficiency of the five local isolates in the inhabitation of growth of the five studied bacterial isolates.

<p>The ionospheric electron density reacts to a change of ionization condition by a time delay Δt. Appleton (1953) demonstrated that this time delay is inversely proportional to the product of the electron density Ne and recombination rate coefficient α. Thus, the evaluation of the time difference between the peak time of VLF emission, which is supposed to represent the instant of maximum ionization, and the ionization source's peak time provides an easy way to estimate α Ne. First used to evaluate the increase of electron density at noon from H α peak emission, this technic was also employed to estimate the recombination rate during solar flares. The GOES Soft X-ray emissions (i.e. in the range 1.5-12keV) are then considered to determine the ionising source peak time.</p><p>Based on VLF measurements obtained from the SUPERSID antenna installed at the Meudon site of the Paris Observatory (France), we computed each flare's time delay from January 2017. We benefit from the events of September 2017, the strongest from the last 10 years. We thus demonstrate the prominent role of Hard X-Rays in ionizing the D-layer of the ionosphere.  </p>

Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrum imaging, where a full spectrum is acquired at each pixel in a rastered image, combines the advantages of imaging and analysis for quantitative compositional mapping. This method has great advantages for the analysis of compositional variations, because the contrast inherent in EDX spectrum images arises from the distinctiveness of the characteristic X-ray spectra in various regions of the surveyed microstructure. EDX spectrum imaging provides for simultaneous spatial, spectral and temporal resolution of the X-rays emitted from the specimen. Many EDX manufacturers have incorporated a spectrum imaging capability within their acquisition and analysis software, and ongoing improvements in computing power will enhance the practicality of spectrum imaging methods, in particular the acquisition, manipulation and analysis of the large raw data files that are generated with this method. This paper surveys the potential role of spectrum imaging in tasks that support true quantitative X-ray microanalysis of bulk specimens: robust qualitative analysis, the construction of representative spectra that describe the specimen, and the extraction of elemental concentrations from the representative spectra.

Rats were treated with three conditioning agents (bacterial endotoxins, zymosan and compound 48/80) known to produce tolerance to other forms of stress, as a means of determining the importance of the reticulo-endothelial system in the response to WBR. Effective protection was provided by tolerance induced by lipopolysaccharide extracts of E. coli bacteria. Some protection was also afforded by conditioning with 48/80 for several days. These agents were active only when administered before exposure to x-rays. Treatment post x-ray broke down the induced resistance. Blood platelet levels remained high in conditioned animals exposed to WBR. It is suggested that a relationship exists between the priming or conditioning of the reticuloendothelial system and the maintenance of satisfactory blood platelet levels in adapted animals receiving WBR.
