Predicting traffic conditions for road segments is the prelude of working on intelligent transportation. Many existing methods can be used for short-term or long-term traffic prediction, but they focus more on regions than on road segments. The lack of fine-grained traffic predicting approach hinders the development of ITS. Therefore, MapLSTM, a spatio-temporal long short-term memory network preluded by map-matching, is proposed in this paper to predict fine-grained traffic conditions. MapLSTM first obtains the historical and real-time traffic conditions of road segments via map-matching. Then LSTM is used to predict the conditions of the corresponding road segments in the future. Breaking the single-index forecasting, MapLSTM can predict the vehicle speed, traffic volume, and the travel time in different directions of road segments simultaneously. Experiments confirmed MapLSTM can not only achieve prediction for road segments based a large scale of GPS trajectories effectively but also have higher predicting accuracy than GPR and ConvLSTM. Moreover, we demonstrate that MapLSTM can serve various applications in a lightweight way, such as cognizing driving preferences, learning navigation, and inferring traffic emissions.

Accurate and timely estimations of large-scale population distributions are a valuable input for social geography and economic research and for policy-making. The most popular large-scale method to calculate such estimations uses mobile phone data. We propose a novel method, firstly based upon using a kernel density estimation (KDE) to estimate dynamic mobile phone users’ distributions at a two-hourly scale temporal resolution. Secondly, a convolutional long short-term memory (ConvLSTM) model was used in our study to predict mobile phone users’ spatial and temporal distributions for the first time at such a fine-grained temporal resolution. The evaluation results show that the predicted people’s mobility derived from the mobile phone users’ density correlates much better with the actual density, both temporally and spatially, as compared to traditional methods such as time-series prediction, autoregressive moving average model (ARMA), and LSTM.

Short term memory (STM) and working memory (WM) performance consistently predict language abilities in children with developmental language disorders. However, causality is not fully established. Moreover, evidence from the fine-grained analysis of STM/WM tasks and comprehension of complex sentences, suggests that long term memory (LTM) representations play an important role. Critical assessment of the articles in the special edition focuses on Zebib et al. and Stanford and Delage. Zebib et al. find that sentence repetition by bilingual language-impaired children more strongly reflects WM than overall linguistic ability. This suggests a dependence on WM when linguistic representations are impoverished. However, the process of ranking predictors is problematic. Stanford and Delage find that STM/WM difficulties affect the processing of complex sentences by individuals with Specific Learning Disabilities. Yet, LTM-based explanations focusing on input frequency may also explain this phenomenon. To make progress we need a combination of experimental studies and large-scale longitudinal studies.

The paper proposes an effective continuous gesture recognition method, which includes two modules: segmentation and recognition. In the segmentation module, the video frames are divided into gesture frames and transitional frames by using the information of hand motion and appearance, and continuous gesture sequences are segmented into isolated sequences. In the recognition module, our method exploits the spatiotemporal information embedded in RGB and depth sequences. For the RGB modality, our method adopts Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory Networks to learn long-term spatiotemporal features from short-term spatiotemporal features obtained from a 3D convolutional neural network. For the depth modality, our method converts a sequence into Dynamic Images and Motion Dynamic Images through weighted rank pooling and feed them into Convolutional Neural Networks, respectively. Our method has been evaluated on both ChaLearn LAP Large-scale Continuous Gesture Dataset and Montalbano Gesture Dataset and achieved state-of-the-art performance.

In the current study, we tested whether representations in visual STM (VSTM) can be biased via top–down attentional modulation of visual activity in retinotopically specific locations. We manipulated attention using retrospective cues presented during the retention interval of a VSTM task. Retrospective cues triggered activity in a large-scale network implicated in attentional control and led to retinotopically specific modulation of activity in early visual areas V1–V4. Importantly, shifts of attention during VSTM maintenance were associated with changes in functional connectivity between pFC and retinotopic regions within V4. Our findings provide new insights into top–down control mechanisms that modulate VSTM representations for flexible and goal-directed maintenance of the most relevant memoranda.

The rise concern about mobile communication performance has driven the growing demand for the construction of mobile network signal maps which are widely utilized in network monitoring, spectrum management, and indoor/outdoor localization. Existing studies such as time-consuming and labor-intensive site surveys are difficult to maintain an update-to-date finegrained signal map within a large area. The mobile crowdsensing (MCS) paradigm is a promising approach for building signal maps because collecting large-scale MCS data is low-cost and with little extra-efforts. However, the dynamic environment and the mobility of the crowd cause spatio-temporal uncertainty and sparsity of MCS. In this work, we leverage MCS as an opportunity to conduct the city-wide mobile network signal map construction. We propose a fine-grained city-wide Cellular Signal Map Construction (CSMC) framework to address two challenges including (i) the problem of missing and unreliable MCS data; (ii) spatio-temporal uncertainty of signal propagation. In particular, CSMC captures spatio-temporal characteristics of signals from both inter- and intra- cellular base stations and conducts missing signal recovery with Bayesian tensor decomposition to build large-area fine-grained signal maps. Furthermore, CSMC develops a context-aware multi-view fusion network to make full use of external information and enhance signal map construction accuracy. To evaluate the performance of CSMC, we conduct extensive experiments and ablation studies on a large-scale dataset with over 200GB MCS signal records collected from Shanghai. Experimental results demonstrate that our model outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in the accuracy of signal estimation and user localization.

<p>Pertumbuhan jumlah kendaraan yang semakin meningkat setiap tahunnya mengakibatkan volume kendaraan yang melintasi ruas jalan semakin padat yang kerap mengakibatkan kemacetan lalu lintas. Kemacetan lalu lintas dapat menjadi beban biaya yang signifikan terhadap kegiatan ekonomi masyarakat. Informasi lalu lintas yang dinamis seperti informasi kondisi lalu lintas secara langsung <em>(real time)</em> akan membantu mempengaruhi aktivitas masyarakat pengguna lalu lintas untuk melakukan perencanaan dan penjadwalan aktivitas yang lebih baik. Penelitian ini mengusulkan model pengamatan kondisi lalu lintas berbasis data GPS pada <em>smartphone</em>, untuk informasi kondisi lalu lintas secara langsung. GPS <em>Receiver</em> pada <em>smartphone</em> menghasilkan data lokasi secara instan dan bersifat mobile sehingga dapat digunakan untuk pengambilan data kecepatan kendaraan secara langsung. Kecepatan kendaraan diperoleh berdasarkan jarak perpindahan koordinat kendaraan dalam satuan detik selanjutnya di konversi menjadi satuan kecepatan (km/jam) kemudian data kecepatan kendaraan di proses menjadi informasi kondisi lalu lintas. Secara menyeluruh model pengamatan berfokus pada tiga tahapan, yaitu akuisisi data kecepatan kendaraan berbasis GPS pada <em>smartphone</em>, pengiriman data kecepatan dan visualisasi kondisi lalu lintas berbasis GIS. Pengujian dilakukan pada ruas jalan kota Denpasar telah mampu mendapatkan data kecepatan kendaraan dan mampu menunjukkan kondisi lalu lintas secara langsung dengan empat kategori keadaan lalu lintas yaitu garis berwarna hitam menunjukkan lalu lintas macet dengan kecepatan kendaraan kurang dari 17 km/jam, merah menunjukkan padat dengan kecepatan kendaraan 17 km/jam sampai 27 km/jam, kuning menunjukkan sedang dengan kecepatan kendaraan 26 km/jam sampai 40 km/jam dan hijau menunjukkan lancar dengan kecepatan kendaraan diatas 40 km/jam.</p><p> </p><p><em><strong>Abstract</strong></em></p><p class="Abstract"><em>The growth in the number of vehicles that is increasing every year has resulted in the volume of vehicles crossing the road increasingly congested which often results in traffic congestion. Traffic congestion can be a significant cost burden on economic activities. Dynamic traffic information such as information on real time traffic conditions will help influence the activities of the traffic user community to better plan and schedule activities. This study proposes a traffic condition observation model based on GPS data on smartphones, for information on real time traffic conditions. The GPS Receiver on the smartphone produces location and coordinate data instantly and is mobile so that it can be used for direct vehicle speed data retrieval. Vehicle speed is obtained based on the displacement distance of the vehicle's coordinates in units of seconds and then converted into units of speed (km / h), the vehicle speed data is then processed into information on traffic conditions. Overall, the observation model focuses on three stages, namely GPS-based vehicle speed data acquisition on smartphones, speed data delivery and visualization of GIS-based traffic conditions. Tests carried out on the Denpasar city road segment have been able to obtain vehicle speed data and are able to show traffic conditions directly with four categories of traffic conditions, namely black lines indicating traffic jammed with vehicle speeds of less than 17 km / h, red indicates heavy with speed vehicles 17 to 27 km / h, yellow indicates medium speed with vehicles 26 km/h to 40 km / h and green shows fluent with vehicle speeds above 40 km / h.</em></p><p><em><strong><br /></strong></em></p>

AbstractIntelligence is a highly polygenic trait and GWAS have identified thousands of DNA variants contributing with small effects. Polygenic scores (PGS) can aggregate those effects for trait prediction in independent samples. As large-scale light-phenotyping GWAS operationalized intelligence as performance in rather superficial tests, the question arises which intelligence facets are actually captured. We used deep-phenotyping to investigate the molecular determinantes of individual differences in cognitive ability. We therefore studied the association between PGS of educational attainment (EA-PGS) and intelligence (IQ-PGS) with a wide range of intelligence facets in a sample of 320 healthy adults. EA-PGS and IQ-PGS had the highest incremental R2s for general (3.25%; 1.78%), verbal (2.55%; 2.39%) and numerical intelligence (2.79%; 1.54%) and the weakest for non-verbal intelligence (0.50%; 0.19%) and short-term memory (0.34%; 0.22%). These results indicate that PGS derived from light-phenotyping GWAS do not reflect different facets of intelligence equally well, and thus should not be interpreted as genetic indicators of intelligence per se. The findings refine our understanding of how PGS are related to other traits or life outcomes.

The interest in human mobility analysis has increased with the rapid growth of positioning technology and motion tracking, leading to a variety of studies based on trajectory recordings. Mapping the routes that people commonly perform was revealed to be very useful for location-based service applications, where individual mobility behaviors can potentially disclose meaningful information about each customer and be fruitfully used for personalized recommendation systems. This paper tackles a novel trajectory labeling problem related to the context of user profiling in “smart” tourism, inferring the nationality of individual users on the basis of their motion trajectories. In particular, we use large-scale motion traces of short-term foreign visitors as a way of detecting the nationality of individuals. This task is not trivial, relying on the hypothesis that foreign tourists of different nationalities may not only visit different locations, but also move in a different way between the same locations. The problem is defined as a multinomial classification with a few tens of classes (nationalities) and sparse location-based trajectory data. We hereby propose a machine learning-based methodology, consisting of a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network trained on vector representations of locations, in order to capture the underlying semantics of user mobility patterns. Experiments conducted on a real-world big dataset demonstrate that our method achieves considerably higher performances than baseline and traditional approaches.

With the improvement of citizens’ risk perception ability and environmental protection awareness, social conflicts caused by environmental problems in large-scale construction projects are becoming more and more frequent. Traditional social risk prevention management has some defects in obtaining risk data, such as limited coverage, poor availability, and insufficient timeliness, which makes it impossible to realize effective early warning of social risks in the era of big data. This paper focuses on the three environments of diversification of stakeholders, risk media, and big data era. The evolution characteristics of the social risk of environmental damage of large-scale construction projects are analyzed from the four stages of incubation, outbreak, mitigation, and regression in essence. On this basis, a social risk early warning model is constructed, and the multicenter network governance mode of social risk of environmental damage in large-scale construction projects and practical social risk prevention strategies in different stages are put forward. Experiments show that the long short-term memory neural network model is effective and feasible for predicting the social risk trend of environmental damage of large-scale construction projects. Compared with other classical models, the long short-term memory model has the advantages of strong processing capability and high early warning accuracy for time-sensitive data and will have broad application prospects in the field of risk control research. By using the network governance framework and long short-term memory model, this paper studies the environmental mass events of large-scale construction projects on the risk early warning method, providing reference for the government to effectively prevent and control social risk of environmental damage of large-scale construction project in China.
