Sustainable management of traffic flows at signalized intersections is an important issue in terms of traffic engineering. The minimization of lost time, emission, fuel consumption, etc., can be achieved by optimization-based intersection management. In this study, a new traffic signal control model is developed for the management of three-leg signalized intersections. In the proposed model, signal timing and signal phasing are optimized simultaneously using Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm which is one of the population-based metaheuristic algorithms. The effectiveness of the model is tested on sample traffic scenarios with VISSIM simulation software considering average vehicle delay performance criteria. Results show that the proposed approach may reduce the average vehicle delay between the rates of 28%–42% and 3%–38% comparing to the optimum fixed-time signal control and vehicle-actuated signal control for tested scenarios, respectively.

This article is on the purpose of developing an isolated tram signal priority control strategy based on logic rule for modern tram system. The designed method is presented with features that can ensure the intersection operates in a proper manner on the premise of tram priority and avoid vehicle queue overflow when the tram passes. In this study, the new method description consists of two parts: (1) the detector locations are determined, which include the upstream detector, the upstream trigger detector, the downstream detector, and the queuing detector upon entry approach to the intersection; (2) the corresponding priority logical algorithm for signal control is designed. The proposed method is experimentally examined in a tram intersection in Huaian city, China. In the process of the experiment, the detector layout scheme and optimal priority control model are simulated and verified using the VisVAP module of the Vissim simulation software. In the experimental results, the designed scheme significantly decreases average delay than the fixed timing signal control method, while it also can prevent the vehicle queue from overflowing compared to the absolute priority actuated control scheme.

Abstract Estimating traffic accidents play a vital role to apply road safety procedures. This study proposes Differential Evolution Algorithm (DEA) models to estimate the number of accidents in Turkey. In the model development, population (P) and the number of vehicles (N) are selected as model parameters. Three model forms, linear, exponential and semi-quadratic models, are developed using DEA with the data covering from 2000 to 2014. Developed models are statistically compared to select the best fit model. The results of the DE models show that the linear model form is suitable to estimate the number of accidents. The statistics of this form is better than other forms in terms of performance criteria which are the Mean Absolute Percentage Errors (MAPE) and the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE). To investigate the performance of linear DE model for future estimations, a ten-year period from 2015 to 2024 is considered. The results obtained from future estimations reveal the suitability of DE method for road safety applications.

The real-time traffic signal control for intersection requires dynamic turning movements as the basic input data. It is impossible to detect dynamic turning movements directly through current traffic surveillance systems, but dynamic origin-destination (O-D) estimation can obtain it. However, the combined models of dynamic O-D estimation and real-time traffic signal control are rare in the literature. A framework for the multiobjective traffic signal control model for intersection based on dynamic O-D estimation (MSC-DODE) is presented. A state-space model using Kalman filtering is first formulated to estimate the dynamic turning movements; then a revised sequential Kalman filtering algorithm is designed to solve the model, and the root mean square error and mean percentage error are used to evaluate the accuracy of estimated dynamic turning proportions. Furthermore, a multiobjective traffic signal control model is put forward to achieve real-time signal control parameters and evaluation indices. Finally, based on practical survey data, the evaluation indices from MSC-DODE are compared with those from Webster method. The actual and estimated turning movements are further input into MSC-DODE, respectively, and results are also compared. Case studies show that results of MSC-DODE are better than those of Webster method and are very close to unavailable actual values.
