In this paper, g-C3N4-WO3 composite materials were prepared by hydrothermal processing. The composites were characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and N2 adsorption-desorption, respectively. The gas sensing properties of the composites were investigated. The results indicated that the addition of appropriate amount of g-C3N4 to WO3 could improve the response and selectivity to acetone. The sensor based on 2 wt% g-C3N4-WO3 composite showed the best gas sensing performances. When operating at optimum temperature of 310°C, the responses to 1000 ppm and 0.5 ppm acetone were 58.2 and 1.6, respectively, and the ratio of the S1000 ppm acetone to S1000 ppm ethanol reached 3.7.

The properties of nanomaterials usually depend on their microstructures, the same material of different microstructures could be used for various applications. However, most devices could only synthesize a single microstructure, so it is meaningful that the different microstructures were synthesized by one method. In our study, electrospinning was applied to fabricate ZnO nanofibers and nanoparticles. In this approach, Zn(Ac)/PVP composite fibers of different component ratio were synthesized by electrospinning method which was subsequently calcined and formed ZnO nanofibers and nanoparticles. The microstructure, chemical composition and gas sensing were investigated with scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and WS-60A gas sensing measurement system. The synthesis mechanisms of ZnO nanofibers and nanoparticles were discussed in detail.

ε-Fe2O3 is a rare and metastable iron (III) oxide phase. ε-Fe2O3/SiO2 composites were prepared by combining the reverse-micelle and sol-gel methods. An appropriate amount of Ba2+ was needed in this system to promote the formation of ε-Fe2O3 nanorods in SiO2. The size of nanorods varied with different Ba2+ addition amount and sintering procedure. Then pure ε-Fe2O3 nanorods were obtained after stripping SiO2 by etching due to NaOH aqueous solution. The as-synthesized ε-Fe2O3 nanorods were discussed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Interestingly, metastable ε-Fe2O3 nanorods showed a promising performance for the response for ethanol, compared with the stable phases of α-Fe2O3 and γ-Fe2O3. It indicates that nanostructure ε-Fe2O3 (including ε-Fe2O3 nanorods) could be a valuable material for the fabrication of advanced sensing devices.

Nanocomposites based on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) with manganese dioxide (MnO2-x) and copper oxide (CuO) were obtained and investigated. The morphology and elemental composition of MWCNT-layer and nanocomposites MWCNT/MnO2-х, MWCNT/MnO2-х/CuO were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The gas sensing response of MWCNT-layer and nanocomposites upon exposure to hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was demonstrated at room temperature. Effect of increasing the conductivity of MWCNT-layer and nanocomposites upon exposure to NO2 indicates these nanomaterials have conductive of p-type. Copper oxide in nanocomposite significantly enhances the gas sensing response to H2S.

ZnO nanotetrapods have been obtained in large quantities by carbothermal reduction of ZnO powder. These were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, UV-visible spectroscopy and photoluminescence. Electron microscopy revealed that the overall size of the tetrapods is 1.5–2 μm and legs are 30–50 nm in diameter. The size of tetrapods as well as diameter of the legs was found to increase with deposition temperature. Photoluminescence spectra revealed that green emission originating from oxygen vacancies overwhelmed that of the near-band-edge ultraviolet peak. A band gap of 3.27 eV was calculated from optical absorption spectra which agreed well with that estimated from PL spectra. Gas sensing properties of tetrapods were investigated and these were found to be 5 times more sensitive to H2S gas at room temperature in comparison to ZnO bulk polycrystalline material.

In2O3/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites containing different MWCNT contents were synthesized via direct growth of In2O3 nanoparticles on the functionalized MWCNTs. The nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results exhibited that In2O3 nanoparticles with a diameter of approximate 10 nm were densely decorated on the surface of the MWCNTs. The gas sensitive performance of the nanocomposites to ethanol was also investigated. It was found that In2O3/MWCNTs sensor showed much higher response than that of the pure In2O3 sensor. Moreover, the sensing mechanism was discussed.

In this study, the cerium-doped hydroxyapatite (Ca10−xCex(PO4)6(OH)2 with xCe = 0.1, 10Ce-HAp) coatings obtained by the spin coating method were presented for the first time. The stability of the 10Ce-HAp suspension particles used in the preparation of coatings was evaluated by ultrasonic studies, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface morphology of the 10Ce-HAp coating was studied by SEM and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques. The obtained 10Ce-HAp coatings were uniform and without cracks or unevenness. Glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used for the investigation of fine chemical depth profiling. The antifungal properties of the HAp and 10Ce-HAp suspensions and coatings were assessed using Candida albicans ATCC 10231 (C. albicans) fungal strain. The quantitative antifungal assays demonstrated that both 10Ce-HAp suspensions and coatings exhibited strong antifungal properties and that they successfully inhibited the development and adherence of C. albicans fungal cells for all the tested time intervals. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) visualization of the C. albicans fungal cells adherence to the 10Ce-HAp surface also demonstrated their strong inhibitory effects. In addition, the qualitative assays also suggested that the 10Ce-HAp coatings successfully stopped the biofilm formation.

Intense photoluminescence (PL) has been observed at room temperature from the polycrystalline SiC samples prepared from carbon-saturated Si melt at a temperature ranging from 1500 to 1650°C. Composition and structure of the samples have been confirmed by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. PL measurements with 325 nm UV light excitation revealed that the room temperature PL spectrum of the samples consists of 3 luminescent bands, the peak energies of which are 2.38 eV, 2.77 eV and 3.06 eV, respectively. The 2.38 eV band is much stronger than the others. It is suggested that some extrinsic PL mechanisms associated with defect or interface states would be responsible to the intensive PL observed at room temperature.

SiOx nanowires were grown on Si substrates by a simple vapor transport method of heating the mixture of silicon monoxide and carbon powders at 1000 °C in a tube of the furnace. The dependence of the growth velocity on the growth temperature and on the radius of nanowires indicates that the SiOx nanowires grow through the vaporliquidsolid (VLS) growth mechanism. The properties of the nanowires are characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and photoluminescence (PL).

In this work, ?-Fe2O3 nanobulk with high aspect ratio were successfully prepared via a facile bubble electrospinning technique using polyvinylidene fluoride and iron chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3?6H2O) as ?-Fe2O3 precursor followed by annealing in air at 600?C. The products were characterized with field emission scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed that ?-Fe2O3 nanobulk has a hierarchical heterostructure which has an extremely broad application prospect in many areas.

Synthesis of a rutile-type lead-substituted tin oxide with (110) face was investigated. The characterization was performed by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area measurements. The homogeneous rutile-type lead-substituted tin oxide was obtained until 4.1 mol% of tin was substituted with lead. The surface of obtained oxide had a homogeneously lead-substituted (110) face.
