In recent years, free-floating bike-sharing systems (FFBSSs) have been considerably developed in China. As there is no requirement to construct bike stations, this system can substantially reduce the cost when compared to the traditional bike-sharing systems. However, FFBSSs have also become a critical cause of parking disorder, especially during the morning and evening rush hours. To address this issue, the local governments stipulated that FFBSSs are required to deploy virtual stations near public transit stations and major establishments. Therefore, the location assignment of virtual stations is sufficiently considered in the FFBSSs, which is required to solve the parking disorder and satisfy the user demand, simultaneously. The purpose of this study is to optimize the location assignment of virtual stations that can meet the growing demand of users by analyzing the usage data of their shared bikes. This optimization problem is generally formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to maximize the user demand. As an alternative solution, this article proposes a clustering algorithm, which can solve this problem in real time. The experimental results demonstrate that the MILP model and the proposed method are superior to the K-means method. Our method not only provides a solution for maximizing the user demand but also gives an optimized design scheme of the FFBSSs that represents the characteristics of virtual stations.

Nowadays, as a low-carbon and sustainable transport mode bike-sharing systems are increasingly popular all over the world, as they can reduce road congestion and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Aiming at the problem of the mismatch of bike supply and user demand, the operators have to transfer bikes from surplus stations to deficiency stations to redistribute them among stations by vehicles. In this paper, we consider a mixed fleet of electric vehicles and internal combustion vehicles as well as the traffic restrictions to the traditional vehicles in some metropolises. The mixed integer programming model is firstly established with the objective of minimizing the total rebalancing cost of the mixed fleet. Then, a simulated annealing algorithm enhanced with variable neighborhood structures is designed and applied to a set of randomly generated test instances. The computational results and sensitivity analysis indicate that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce the total cost of rebalancing.

Inclusionary housing (IH) is a regulatory instrument adopted by local governments in many countries to produce affordable housing by capturing resources created through the marketplace. In order to assess whether it is efficient, scholarly attention has been widely focused on its evaluation. However, there is a lack of studies evaluating IH from a governance perspective. Since IH is about involving private actors in affordable housing production, the governance point of view of cooperating governmental and non-governmental actors governing society to achieve societal goals is highly relevant. The two most important elements of governance—actors and interrelationships among these actors—are taken to build an analytical framework to explore and evaluate the governance of IH. Based on a research approach that combines a literature review and a case study of China, this paper concludes that the ineffective governance of Chinese IH is based on three challenges: (1) The distribution of costs and benefits across actors is unequal since private developers bear the cost, but do not enjoy the increments of land value; (2) there is no sufficient compensation for developers to offset the cost; and (3) there is no room for negotiations for flexibility in a declining market. Given that IH is favored in many Chinese cities, this paper offers the policy implications: local governments should bear more costs of IH, rethink their relations with developers, provide flexible compliance options for developers, and perform differently in a flourishing housing market and a declining housing market.

AbstractCooperation between the mobile edge computing (MEC) and the mobile cloud computing (MCC) in offloading computing could improve quality of service (QoS) of user equipments (UEs) with computation-intensive tasks. In this paper, in order to minimize the expect charge, we focus on the problem of how to offload the computation-intensive task from the resource-scarce UE to access point’s (AP) and the cloud, and the density allocation of APs’ at mobile edge. We consider three offloading computing modes and focus on the coverage probability of each mode and corresponding ergodic rates. The resulting optimization problem is a mixed-integer and non-convex problem in the objective function and constraints. We propose a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm called Iteration of Convex Optimization and Nonlinear Programming (ICONP) to solve it. Numerical results verify the better performance of our proposed algorithm. Optimal computing ratios and APs’ density allocation contribute to the charge saving.

AbstractObjectiveTo support the selection of food items for FFQs in such a way that the amount of information on all relevant nutrients is maximised while the food list is as short as possible.DesignSelection of the most informative food items to be included in FFQs was modelled as a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model. The methodology was demonstrated for an FFQ with interest in energy, total protein, total fat, saturated fat, monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, total carbohydrates, mono- and disaccharides, dietary fibre and potassium.ResultsThe food lists generated by the MILP model have good performance in terms of length, coverage and R2 (explained variance) of all nutrients. MILP-generated food lists were 32–40 % shorter than a benchmark food list, whereas their quality in terms of R2 was similar to that of the benchmark.ConclusionsThe results suggest that the MILP model makes the selection process faster, more standardised and transparent, and is especially helpful in coping with multiple nutrients. The complexity of the method does not increase with increasing number of nutrients. The generated food lists appear either shorter or provide more information than a food list generated without the MILP model.

Items supplies planning of a logistic system is one of the major issue in operations research. In this article the aim is to determine how much of each item per month from each supplier logistics system requirements must be provided. To do this, a novel multi objective mixed integer programming mathematical model is offered for the first time. Since in logistics system, delivery on time is very important, the first objective is minimization of time in delivery on time costs (including lack and maintenance costs) and the cost of purchasing logistics system. The second objective function is minimization of the transportation supplier costs. Solving the mathematical model shows how to use the Multiple Objective Decision Making (MODM) can provide the ensuring policy and transportation logistics needed items. This model is solved with CPLEX and computational results show the effectiveness of the proposed model.

With the distributed generation such as photovoltaic power system (PVS) is largely introduced into power grid, some significant problems such as system instability problem increase seriously. In order to make full use of PVS and make sure the voltage exceeding probability is limited within a certain range to ensure the power quality, as well as consider the cost of access device, the suitable PVS access node and capacity is important. Based on this problem, this paper establishes the probabilistic power flow model of PVS by introducing the combined Cumulants and the Gram-Charlier expansion method. Also, to solve the nonlinear combinatorial optimization problem, this paper uses PSO algorithm. Finally to get the suitable PVS access node and capacity, also calculate the solution of voltage exceeding probability.

Abstract Most industrial robots cannot be off-line programmed to carry out a task accurately, unless their kinematic model is suitably corrected through a calibration procedure. However, proper calibration is an expensive and time-consuming procedure due to the highly accurate measurement equipment required and due to the significant amount of data that must be collected. To improve the efficiency of robot calibration, an optimization procedure is proposed in this paper. The objective of minimizing the cost of the calibration is combined with the objective of minimizing the residual error after calibration in one multiple-objective optimization. Prediction of the residual error for a given calibration process presents the main difficulty for implementing the optimization. It is proposed that the residual error is expressed as a polynomial function. This function is obtained as a result of fitting a response surface to either experimental or simulated sample estimates of the residual error. The optimization problem is then solved by identifying a reduced set of possible solutions, thus greatly simplifying the decision maker’s choice of an effective calibration procedure. An application example of this method is also included.

By bringing the computation and storage resources close proximity to the mobile network edge, mobile edge computing (MEC) is a key enabling technology for satisfying the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) infotainment applications’ requirements, e.g., video streaming service (VSA). However, the explosive growth of mobile video traffic brings challenges for video streaming providers (VSPs). One known issue is that a huge traffic burden on the vehicular network leads to increasing VSP costs for providing VSA to mobile users (i.e., autonomous vehicles). To address this issue, an efficient resource sharing scheme between underutilized vehicular resources is a promising solution to reduce the cost of serving VSA in the vehicular network. Therefore, we propose a new VSA model based on the lower cost of obtaining data from vehicles and then minimize the VSP’s cost. By using existing data resources from nearby vehicles, our proposal can reduce the cost of providing video service to mobile users. Specifically, we formulate our problem as mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINP) in order to calculate the total payment of the VSP. In addition, we introduce an incentive mechanism to encourage users to rent its resources. Our solution represents a strategy to optimize the VSP serving cost under the quality of service (QoS) requirements. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed mechanism is possible to achieve up to 21% and 11% cost-savings in terms of the request arrival rate and vehicle speed, in comparison with other existing schemes, respectively.

Purpose The global performance of industrial robots partly depends on the properties of drive system consisting of motor inertia, gearbox inertia, etc. This paper aims to deal with the problem of optimization of global dynamic performance for robotic drive system selected from available components. Design/methodology/approach Considering the performance specifications of drive system, an optimization model whose objective function is composed of working efficiency and natural frequency of robots is proposed. Meanwhile, constraints including the rated and peak torque of motor, lifetime of gearbox and light-weight were taken into account. Furthermore, the mapping relationship between discrete optimal design variables and component properties of drive system were presented. The optimization problem with mixed integer variables was solved by a mixed integer-laplace crossover power mutation algorithm. Findings The optimization results show that our optimization model and methods are applicable, and the performances are also greatly promoted without sacrificing any constraints of drive system. Besides, the model fits the overall performance well with respect to light-weight ratio, safety, cost reduction and others. Practical implications The proposed drive system optimization method has been used for a 4-DOF palletizing robot, which has been largely manufactured in a factory. Originality/value This paper focuses on how the simulation-based optimization can be used for the purpose of generating trade-offs between cost, performance and lifetime when designing robotic drive system. An applicable optimization model and method are proposed to handle the dynamic performance optimization problem of a drive system for industrial robot.
