Several treatments have been suggested to correct dentofacial abnormalities, including orthognathic surgery. The aim of the present systematic review was to assess the impact of orthognathic surgery on patient satisfaction, overall quality of life, quality of life related to oral health—and to orthognathic surgery in particular—among adult patients. Two investigators independently reviewed the available literature in the databases PubMed/MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO, EMBASE, Trip, and Google Scholar (gray literature) based on the keywords “orthognathic surgery” and “quality of life.” An analysis of bias was performed based on the MINORS (methodological index for nonrandomized studies). A total of 245 relevant studies were retrieved from the databases, and 6 additional studies were located after a manual search of the references. Following selection based on titles, abstracts, and full-text analysis, 30 studies were included in the present systematic review. To evaluate quality of life before and after orthognathic surgery, 12 studies applied the surgery-related Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ), 12 used the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), and 4 used the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). Orthognathic surgery results in improvements in quality of life both physically and psychosocially after surgery and is associated with high rates of patient satisfaction.

Dentofacial deformity (DFD) may be defined as facial and dental disproportions great enough to affect significantly the individual’s quality of life (QoL). Objective: This study aimed to verify and compare the impacts of and differences in QoL in individuals with and without DFD. Material and methods: The impact of DFD on QoL was evaluated through the following questionnaires: Short Form Health Survey (SF36), a generic Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) questionnaire (Oral Health Impact Profile Questionnaire – OHIP-49), a condition-specific questionnaire for DFD (Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire – OQLQ) and a single question answered by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Results: Greater and negative impacts on QoL were observed in patients with DFD in all domains of OQLQ and OHIP; and in two domains of SF36: emotional well-being and social functioning. Conclusion: DFD greatly and negatively impacted on QoL of individuals with DFD greater mainly evidenced through general and specific OHRQoL questionnaires.

Background: Hypertension is an commonly encountered disease which adversely affect  all aspects of quality of life (QoL). The existing studies are confounded by the presence of multiple comorbidities and inclusion of elderly, which by themselves impairs the QoL. There is thus a need to study the impact of hypertension on QoL, in isolation.Method: This is a single center, prospective, intention to treat, observation study. The aim of the study is to evaluate the change in the QoL over six months, in newly diagnosed asymptomatic patients of hypertension. The tools used to assess the QoL included World Health Organisation’s Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL- BREF) and Short Form-36 (SF-36).Result: A total of 232 patients (172 males and 60 females) were enrolled in the study. The mean age was 44.66 years. A total of 102 patients (43.97%) had stage-1 and 130 patients (56.03%) had stage-2 hypertension. The female gender is associated with a higher likelihood of presentation with stage-2 hypertension. The male cohort had a better baseline QoL. The desired blood pressures was achieved in 40.52%. With therapy, the QoL improved significantly; sub-hoc analysis showed, the improvement was higher in males and those with stage-1 hypertension. There is an inverse relationship between the QoL and requirement for higher number of antihypertensive mediations. Conclusions: In patients with asymptomatic primary hypertension, treatment improves all aspects of QoL. The factors adversely affecting the QoL include female gender, higher stage of hypertension, poor blood pressure control and requirement of higher numbers of antihypertensive medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Some proposals of myofunctional therapy directed to individuals undergoing orthognathic surgery have been presented which promote the orofacial myofunctional balance, enhancing the treatment stability. OBJECTIVE: To verify the effect of myofunctional therapy on orofacial functions and quality of life in individuals undergoing orthognathic surgery. METHOD: A total of 24 individuals, with mean age of 26.5 years, participated in the study. They were divided into two groups, namely with myofunctional therapy (N=12) and without myofunctional therapy (N=12). Breathing, chewing, swallowing, and speech were evaluated from tests established by the MBGR Orofacial Myofunctional Evaluation, using the scores specified in the protocol. The quality of life (QL) was evaluated using the Oral Health Impact Profile-OHIP-14 questionnaire, which comprises 14 questions that measure the individual´s perception of the impact of their oral conditions on their well-being in recent months. The evaluations were carried out before and 3 months after orthognathic surgery. The myofunctional therapy was initiated 30 days after surgery, with exercises aimed at improving orofacial mobility, tone and sensitivity, as well as the training of normal physiological patterns of orofacial functions. The comparisons between orofacial functions and the study groups were verified by the Mann-Whitney test, using a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: After surgery, the individuals without myofunctional therapy presented with an improvement in breathing and oral health-related quality of life (p<0.05), while in the group undergoing myofunctional therapy there was improvement in all aspects investigated (p<0.05). Comparison between the study groups showed better performance in breathing (p=0.002), chewing (p=0.012), swallowing (p=0.002) and speech (0.034) in individuals who underwent myofunctional therapy. CONCLUSION: The orthognathic surgery alone improved breathing and quality of life. However, the surgical procedure associated with myofunctional treatment, besides improving all oral functions investigated and quality of life, provided better functional performance in breathing, chewing, swallowing and speech. This study’s participants demonstrated the effectiveness of the orofacial myofunctional intervention.

The purpose of this study was to quantify the impact of recurrent genital herpes (RGH) on health-related quality of life, healthcare resource and workplace productivity. This was a cross-sectional survey conducted in 5 countries (Australia, Denmark, Italy, The Netherlands and UK). Patients with a confirmed history of RGH completed the MOS 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and the Recurrent Genital Herpes Quality of Life questionnaire (RGHQoL). Questionnaires addressing frequency of access to healthcare services and workplace productivity were also completed and patients' medical history was obtained. Scores for 6 of the 8 domains of the SF-36 were significantly lower ( P<0.001) i.e. worse, compared with scores for the normal population. The RGHQoL score was significantly lower in patients experiencing more frequent or more severe recurrences. Forty-five per cent of patients estimated that their work effectiveness was reduced by between 25% and 50% due to genital herpes symptoms.

Purpose. The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of oral health status on the quality of life of adults in different regions of Greece, using the Oral Health Impact Profile-short form (OHIP-14).Methods. A random sample consisting of a total of 504 Greek adults between the ages of 35–44 years (mean 39.1 ± 3.5) was selected from different urban and rural areas, and face-to-face interviews were conducted using the validated Greek language OHIP-14. Associations of the total OHIP-14 score and its 7 sub-scales along with the self-perceived quality of life were evaluated with Spearman's correlations.Results. The subjects had an overall weighted OHIP-14 score of 1.1 (sd 1.9). No significant differences were found for either rural or non-metropolitan areas when compared to urban or metropolitan regions. High scores of above 2 were determined for functional limitation, physical pain, handicap, and the psychological discomfort scales. The education level of the subjects had a significant positive impact on the quality of life of the subjects.Conclusions. Dental and oral health conditions are factors that do impact on the quality of life of individuals.

The Prolapse Quality of Life Questionnaire (P-QoL) is a specific questionnaire created to assess the impact of pelvic organ prolapse on women’s quality of life. The aim of the present study was to cross-culturally adapt and assess the psychometric properties of the P-QoL for Spanish women. The cross-cultural adaptation was conducted by a standardized translation/back-translation method. Psychometric analysis was performed by assessing the validity, reliability, responsiveness and feasibility. A total of 200 Spanish women were recruited and assigned to symptomatic and asymptomatic groups. The Spanish P-QoL version demonstrated good content validity. Convergent validity showed high intercorrelations with the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory short form and the Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire short form. The discriminant validity showed statistically significant differences between the symptomatic and the asymptomatic groups. The internal consistency was high and of acceptable values. The test-retest reliability was shown to be high in all the cases. Regarding responsiveness, the effect size and standardized response mean demonstrated moderate values. The average time for administration was 10 (3) min. The Spanish P-QoL showed considerable support for the appropriate metric properties of validity, reliability, responsiveness and feasibility to evaluate the symptom severity and its impact on the quality of life in Spanish women with urogenital prolapse.
