This study investigated the phytochemical characteristics and antioxidant activity in leaves, roots, stem, flower, and seed parts of Datura alba (D. alba). The study also assessed the heavy metal (Cr, Mn, Zn, and Cu) accumulation in each part of the plant. Among the phytochemicals, alkaloids were found only in leaves while tannins, flavonoids, and phenols were present in all parts of the plant. For antioxidant activity, free radical scavenging assay for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was performed using ascorbic acid as the standard. Higher activity was shown by stem extract in methanol and leaf extract in n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and chloroform. Furthermore, all the target heavy metals were detected in all plant sections with the highest concentration of Zn in leaves and Cu in stem, root, flower, and seed. Due to stronger antioxidant potential and phytochemical composition, D. alba could prove as valuable prospect in pharmaceutical formulations by taking part in the antioxidant defense system against generation of free radicals.

Background.Today infertile marriage is not only a serious medical, but also a socio-demographic and economic problem. Male factor contributes averagely to half of the cases of the disease in couples. Such factors as high levels of reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress have been reported to compromise the process of spermatogenesis and sperm function in men. Oxidative stress is a significant risk factor for male infertility. A pro-oxidant testicular environment may alter the expression profile of functional sperm proteins and result in poor sperm quality.Aims.To study the characteristics of the intensity of the processes of lipoperoxidation and antioxidant status in the ejaculate of men with different variants of spermograms.Materials and methods. We examined 69 men with primary infertility and 155 fertile men. The content of lipid peroxidation components and antioxidant protection was determined by spectrophotometric method.Results.The results of the study in men with infertility and asthenozoospermia showed decreased total antioxidant activity of sperm by 50 % and α-tocopherol by 52 %, and in men with infertility and oligozoospermia, decreased total antioxidant activity of sperm by 47 % and α-tocopherol by 41 %.Conclusions.The analysis indicates a change in the parameters of the system of lipid peroxidation – antioxidant defense system and confirms the development of oxidative stress in them. Depending on the pathological state of the ejaculate in men of reproductive age, lipid peroxidation processes have their own characteristics. In men with oligozoospermia, peroxidation processes occur more intensively. Activation of lipid peroxidation – antioxidant defense system processes can be both a consequence and a cause of various metabolic changes in the human body.

AbstractThe present study was designed to evaluate the effect of Plasmodium and Salmonella co-infection in LACA mice. The parasitaemic level, bacterial load, histological alterations and levels of oxidants/antioxidant activity were measured. Co-infected mice had a high parasitaemic level, increased bacterial load, and died earlier than Plasmodium-infected mice. Histologically, co-infected mice had more architectural damage in the liver, spleen, kidney, and brain than the control groups. The level of lipid peroxidation was significantly increased and the activities of antioxidative enzymes (superoxide dismutase and catalase) were decreased in all organs of co-infected mice compared to the control groups, indicating depression of the antioxidant defense system. The present study demonstrates more severe histological and biochemical alterations in co-infected mice, highlighting the importance of early diagnosis for selection of appropriate treatments and reducing the likelihood of further complications.

Bakeridesia gaumeri is an endemic plant of the Yucatan peninsula, where it is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of dysentery, enterocolitis and diarrhea. The stem extract of the plant showed significant antioxidant activity in the DPPH free radical scavenging assay. Bioassay-guided fractionation of the crude extract resulted in the isolation and identification of 7-hydroxycadalenal (1, EC50 0.85 ± 0.06 mM) and trans-clovamide (2, EC50 0.15 ± 0.01 mM) as the metabolites responsible for the antioxidant activity of the crude extract.

Objective — to determine the state of the antioxidant defense system by studying the total antioxidant activity and indicators of the glutathione system in young patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT). Materials and methods. The study involved 120 patients with GERD and AIT (mean age — 21.9 ± 2.7 уears) and 45 subjects with isolated GERD (mean age — 21.2 ± 2.4 уears). All the investigated patients were the students of higher educational institutions. The general antioxidant activity was investigated as the aggregate indicator of the first phase of antioxidant defense and the state of the glutathione link of the antioxidant system (the activity of glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione). Results. It has been established that in patients with isolated GERD the total antioxidant activity of blood serum was significantly lower in comparison with the control group and was significantly suppressed with the addition of AIT. The decreased synthesis of glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione was reveled at the comorbid pathologies, as well as dependence of these parameters from the morphological forms of the esophageal mucous lesions: the most intensive alterations were observed  at the erosive form of the disease. Conclusions. The combination of GERD and AIT was accompanied by the changes in the antioxidant defense system parameters. This was manifested in the inhibition of the indicator of the total antioxidant activity and the enzymatic component of the second phase of the system — the glutathione link. These changes were dependent on the morphological form of the esophageal lesions.

The aim of this research was to analyze the effect of different temperatures on physiological quality and relate the responses with the antioxidant activity of three lots of corn seeds. The seeds from three lots were exposed for 24h at temperatures of 15, 25, 35 and 40°C and then evaluated for percentage, speed index and first germination count, as well as early growth and activity of antioxidant enzymes in the seedlings. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replications, with subsequent polynomial regression analysis. The results showed that the seeds from the three lots of corn exposed to temperatures of 15 and 40°C, were of better high physiological quality (vigor), which explains the low activity of enzymes of the antioxidant defense system in these same temperatures. The antioxidant defense system is related to the physiological quality of corn seeds exposed to thermal stress.
