This paper focuses on the numerical study and precise forecast of Zika epidemic. An early warning index algorithm of Zika epidemic is given, and the applications of this algorithm are investigated. We pay attention to the mathematical approaches to estimate the tendency of Zika epidemic in detail. A numerical experiment is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by the numerical calculation of early warning index of Brazil.

Due to the increasing incidence of metabolic syndrome, the development of new therapeutic strategies is urgently required. One promising approach is to focus on the predisease state (so-called Mibyou in traditional Japanese medicine) before metabolic syndrome as a preemptive medical target. We recently succeeded in detecting a predisease state before metabolic syndrome using a mathematical theory called the dynamical network biomarker (DNB) theory. The detected predisease state was characterized by 147 DNB genes among a total of 24,217 genes in TSOD (Tsumura-Suzuki Obese Diabetes) mice, a well-accepted model of metabolic syndrome, at 5 weeks of age. The timing of the predisease state was much earlier than the onset of metabolic syndrome in TSOD mice reported to be at approximately 8–12 weeks of age. In the present study, we investigated whether the predisease state in TSOD mice can be inhibited by the oral administration of a Kampo formula, bofutsushosan (BTS), which is usually used to treat obese patients with metabolic syndrome in Japan, from 3 to 7 weeks of age. We found the comprehensive suppression of the early warning signals of the DNB genes by BTS at 5 weeks of age and later. Specifically, the standard deviations of 134 genes among the 147 DNB genes decreased at 5 weeks of age as compared to the nontreatment control group, and 80 of them showed more than 50% reduction. In addition, at 7 weeks of age, the body weight and blood glucose level were significantly lower in the BTS-treated group than in the nontreatment control group. The results of our study suggest a novel mechanism of BTS; it suppressed fluctuations of the DNB genes at the predisease state before metabolic syndrome and thus prevented the subsequent transition to metabolic syndrome. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the preventive and preemptive effects of a Kampo formula on Mibyou before metabolic syndrome for the first time based on scientific evaluation.

The object of study is a single-stage double-suction axially split volute casing centrifugal pump. Background. In the design process of pumps, the problems associated with ensuring the tightness of the axial joint of a pump casing being under the effect of mechanical and temperature loads, are being solved. During the study of axial joint tightness, numerical calculation methods are used to estimate the pressure intensity on the contacting surfaces. A detachable joint under the external load satisfies the criterions of the tightness if the pressure intensity on the sealing surfaces is higher than values of the specific pressure prescribed by regulations. However, inability to experimentally determine the pressure intensity on the contacting surfaces has so far prevented to assess the accuracy of results obtained by the numerical calculation methods. Objective. In order to verify the numerical results obtained by mathematical models, an experiment was carried out using a special Prescale film that registers the magnitude of the contact pressure on the joint of the specimen model of the flange fragment. Based on the experimental results, an analysis of the pressure intensity distribution was conducted. Methods. To conduct the experiment, there was developed a method for determining the pressure intensity on the contacting surfaces according to the proposed scheme of the specimen of the flange fragment. Results. A comparative analysis of the solving results obtained for the contact problem on the finite-element models of the flange fragment and the zone of the pump casing joint in the discharge chamber area showed a good coincidence of the results. Analysis of results obtained experimentally on the specimen of flange fragment and results of the numerical calculation on the flange fragment model also showed a good agreement. Conclusions. Therefore, results of the calculation of the pressure intensity in the detachable joints on mathematical models have been experimentally confirmed.

A numerical calculation model of multihead twisted spiral tube (MTST) was established. In the range of Reynolds number from 5000 to 35000, the influence of different twisted structure on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the MTST was studied by numerical calculation. Numerical calculation results indicate that the Nusselt number and friction coefficient increase with the increase in the ratio of outside and inside diameter of the cross-section, the increase in the number of twisted nodes, and the increase in the number of twisted spiral tube heads. Under the condition of the same spiral structure and the same hydraulic diameter, the heat transfer performance of the MTST is better than that of the spiral smooth tube. In addition, through artificial neural network (ANN) analysis, the ratio of outside and inside diameter of the cross-section, number of twisted nodes, and the number of twisted spiral tube heads were optimized to promote the comprehensive heat transfer performance. The performance evaluation criterion is the highest when the ratio of outside and inside diameter of the cross-section is 25/22.5, the number of twisted nodes is 3, and the number of twisted spiral tube heads is 3, which is 1.849 of the spiral smooth tube.
