The long-term behaviour of geosynthetics applied in coastal engineering structures can be adversely affected by many agents. This paper studies the resistance of a nonwoven polypropylene geotextile against some degradation agents present in marine environments and evaluates the existence of interactions between them. For that purpose, the geotextile was exposed to some laboratory degradation tests: immersion tests (in seawater, deionised water, and sodium chloride 35 g·L−1), thermooxidation, and artificial weathering. The geotextile was (1) exposed separately to each degradation test and (2) exposed successively to combinations of two or three degradation tests. The damage caused by the degradation tests was evaluated by monitoring the tensile properties of the geotextile. Based on the changes occurred in tensile strength, reduction factors were determined. The reduction factors obtained directly in the multiple exposures were compared with those obtained by the traditional methodology for the combined effect of the degradation agents. The results, among other findings, showed the existence of relevant interactions between the degradation agents and showed that the reduction factors obtained by the traditional methodology were unable to represent accurately (by underestimating) the degradation occurred in the geotextile.

This work studies the effect of some liquids (water, sulphuric acid 0.1 mol.L-1 and sodium hydroxide 0.1 mol.L-1) in the resistance of a polypropylene geotextile against thermo-oxidation. For that purpose, the geotextile was (1) exposed in isolation to the liquids (immersion tests) and to thermo-oxidation (oven-ageing tests) and (2) exposed consecutively to both degradation tests (combined effect). The damage suffered by the geotextile in the degradation tests was evaluated by monitoring changes in its tensile behaviour. Based on the changes occurred in tensile strength, reduction factors were determined. The reduction factors obtained in the successive exposures to liquids and thermo-oxidation were compared with the reduction factors determined by the traditional methodology for the combined effect of those agents. The results, among other findings, showed the existence of an effect of sulphuric acid 0.1 mol.L-1 in the resistance of the geotextile against thermo-oxidation. Indeed, the successive exposure to sulphuric acid 0.1 mol.L-1 and thermo-oxidation (two agents that individually did not cause relevant damage) led to some degradation. Due to the interaction occurred between the degradation agents, the traditional methodology was unable to predict correctly (by underestimating) the reduction factor for the combined effect of sulphuric acid 0.1 mol.L-1 and thermo-oxidation.

Exposure of plasmid recombinant microorganisms to an open environment, either inadvertently or intentionally, requires research into those fundamental processes that govern plasmid retention, transfer and expression. In the open environment, a majority of the microbial activity occurs associated with an interface, within thin biological layers consisting of cells and their insoluble extracellular polymer, layers known as biofilms. Current toxic wastewater or wastegas treatment reactors exploit bacterial biofilm systems for certain system operating advantages. Using recombinant bacteria within a biofilm reactor to degrade xenobiotic wastes requires finding a suitable host to harbor and express the desired plasmid phenotype. Suitable host characteristics include: the ability to produce copious amounts of biofilm, resistance to waste-related injury and toxicity, and the ability to retain and express the desired plasmid during long term operation. This paper reports on a laboratory evaluation of factors governing plasmid retention and the expression of trichloroethene (TCE) degradative capacity in both suspended and biofilm cultures.

AbstractIncreased demand for power generation coupled with changing seasonal water uncertainty has caused a worldwide increase in the construction of large hydrologic engineering structures. That said, the soon-to-be-completed Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will impound the Blue Nile River in Western Ethiopia and its reservoir will encompass ~ 1763 km2 and store ~ 67 Gt (km3) of surface water. The impoundment will undergo maximum seasonal load changes of ~ 28 to ~ 36 Gt during projected seasonal hydroelectric operations. The GERD impoundment will cause significant subsurficial stresses, and could possibly trigger seismicity in the region. This study examines Coulomb stress and hydrologic load centroid movements for several GERD impoundment and operational scenarios. The maximum subsurficial Coulomb stress applied on optimally oriented fault planes from the full impoundment is ~ 186 kPa and over 30% of our model domain incurs Coulomb stresses ≥ 10 kPa, regardless of the impoundment period length. The main driver behind Coulomb stress and load centroid motion during impoundment is the annual, accumulated daily reservoir storage change. The maximum Coulomb stresses from the highest amplitude season of five long-term operational scenarios are around 36, 33, 29, 41, and 24% of the total maximum stresses from the entire GERD impoundment. Variations in annual Coulomb stresses during modeled GERD operations are attributed to the seasonal load per unit area, and partially to the initial seasonal water level. The spatial patterns and amplitudes of these stress tensors are closely linked to both the size and timing of GERD inflow/outflow rates, and an improved understanding of the magnitude and extent of these stresses provides useful information to water managers to better understand potential reservoir triggered seismic events from several different operational and impoundment strategies.

AbstractOn the basis of investigations with samples from a fertilization trial started in 1980, some parameters of food storage ability are evaluated. Microbial infestation of the product during incubation seems to be the most reliable parameter, but the circumstances of infestation and the optimal test conditions are unknown. There are no reliable correlations among the results of degradation tests, storage tests under optimal conditions, and chemical contents of the product. The concept of product vitality (a product-oriented quality referring to a product full of vigor) is based on results of degradation tests. Ultimately, however, food quality standards are based on human priorities (human-oriented). Therefore, not only product characteristics, but also social, psychological, and environmental criteria should be considered.

Six patients between the ages of 25 and 59, with chronic, primary insomnia received the new, non-benzodiazepine, hypnotic zopiclone continuously for 17 weeks after a drug free interval of 12 nights. To qualify for the study, sleep efficiency, determined by a sleep study on two, consecutive, placebo-controlled nights, had to be less than 75%. Patients evaluated their sleep by questionnaire and had sleep studies completed throughout active treatment. Zopiclone (7.5 mg) increased sleep efficiency by decreasing sleep latency, wakefulness after sleep onset and increasing total sleep time. Sleep architecture was minimally affected by zopiclone treatment; no significant changes in delta or REM sleep were observed. The commonest side effect was a bitter or metallic taste. No significant changes in biological functioning were noted throughout the study period. These findings indicate that zopiclone is a safe and effective hypnotic medication which maintains its effectiveness with protracted use.

<p>Ecosystem-based management (EBM) has become an increasingly popular concept for government agencies to incorporate into management planning strategies. The basic idea behind EBM is that an ecosystem remains intact, resilient and productive in the long-term, to provide for ecological, social, cultural and economic benefits. The problem that decision makers face is that there is often little information regarding the structure and functioning of ecosystems upon which to base meaningful decisions. A further complication is that governance of the environment is highly sectoral both across government and within agencies. This often leads to fractured management between the terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments, potentially risking biodiversity loss and the stability of ecosystems.  Small oceanic islands may potentially be model ecosystems for undertaking ecological studies, due to their constrained spatial extent and often unmodified condition. The New Zealand Subantarctic Islands, which are remote and largely unmodified, provide a natural laboratory to study the structure and functioning of ecosystems. I undertook stable isotope and water nutrient sampling to describe the trophic structure, trophic interactions and the drivers of the Antipodes and Bounty Islands, two of the islands in New Zealand’s Subantarctic region. These islands have high conservation value and are an important area for breeding seabirds and marine mammals, but there have been no studies at these islands to understand how they function and what the connections are between the terrestrial and marine environments.  Using the stable isotope signatures of nitrogen (δ¹⁵N) and carbon (δ¹³C) from a wide range of common marine and terrestrial species at both islands, I described the trophic structure of each island. I found that the islands had a similar number of trophic levels and that omnivory was present beyond secondary consumers and below top level predators. Antipodes Island had a more complex food web than the Bounty Islands, but both islands showed strong linkages between the terrestrial and marine environments at both a local scale and with habitats beyond the sovereignty area of New Zealand.  A basic two-source mixing model was used to determine the carbon sources that were important at each island. It was found that the Antipodes Island marine communities were influenced by phytoplankton, but that kelp was also an important contributor of carbon to consumers’ diets. In contrast, at the Bounty Islands, phytoplankton was the sole carbon source in marine communities. Terrestrial species at both islands had a marine-derived carbon component to their diets, with Antipodes Island terrestrial species incorporating a combination of terrestrial-derived and marine-derived carbon. The Bounty Islands’ terrestrial species were completely reliant on marine-derived carbon that was linked to phytoplankton. To further test the diets of species, Isosource was used to reconstruct the diets of the most common marine invertebrates and terrestrial species, again demonstrating strong marine-terrestrial links.  To determine if there was any correlation between the distance from shore, water nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton stable isotope signatures, samples were collected in open ocean sites across the Campbell Plateau and within 12 nautical miles of each island. It was found that the nitrate levels of Antipodes Island water samples decreased with distance towards the island and that nitrate and dissolved reactive phosphorous levels increased with distance towards the Bounty Islands.  This research has clearly demonstrated that there is a strong link between the marine and terrestrial realms at both islands and at spatial scales beyond the islands. The current management of the islands requires this new information to be taken into consideration in future management planning, so that trophic connections are maintained across realms. Further work is required across government and within agencies to bring legislation, policy and science into an integrated framework across sectors. This will allow environmental managers to reduce threats at the ecosystem level to minimise biodiversity loss and the risk of degradation of ecosystems, to protect New Zealand’s long-term biodiversity, social, cultural and economic prosperity.</p>

Preservation of vascular access is critical in the long-term successful management of hemodialysis patients. Dialysis access abnormalities are the most common cause of hospitalization in this patient group, and access problems can increase the morbidity and cost involved in the care of these patients. Native fistulas are preferable to synthetic grafts because of longer survival and a lower complication rate. Venous outflow stenosis is the most common site of obstruction in a failing graft. The pathophysiology of access failure is poorly understood, but it seems to be related to intimal hyperplasia in the native vessel downstream from the anastomosis. The stimulation of local growth factors by needle puncture may also play a role. An assessment of access adequacy includes careful physical examination, laboratory evaluation, and ultimately, angiography. Measurements of recirculation and venous pressure are commonly used to screen for access dysfunction, and their appropriate use will lower the incidence of graft loss in dialysis units. Treatment is usually either angioplasty or surgery, with some centers having success with thrombolytic therapy. New techniques such as atherectomy and stent placement may prove to be beneficial, but this requires further study.
