Complex dynamics of a four-species food web with two preys, one middle predator, and one top predator are investigated. Via the method of Jacobian matrix, the stability of coexisting equilibrium for all populations is determined. Based on this equilibrium, three bifurcations, i.e., Hopf bifurcation, Hopf-Hopf bifurcation, and period-doubling bifurcation, are analyzed by center manifold theorem, bifurcation theorem, and numerical simulations. We reveal that, influenced by the three bifurcations, the food web can exhibit very complex dynamical behaviors, including limit cycles, quasiperiodic behaviors, chaotic attractors, route to chaos, period-doubling cascade in orbits of period 2, 4, and 8 and period 3, 6, and 12, periodic windows, intermittent period, and chaos crisis. However, the complex dynamics may disappear with the extinction of one of the four populations, which may also lead to collapse of the food web. It suggests that the dynamical complexity and food web stability are determined by the food web structure and existing populations.

A new model which allows both the effect of partial selfing selection and an exponential function of the expected payoff is considered. This combines ideas from genetics and evolutionary game theory. The aim of this work is to study the effects of partial selfing selection on the discrete dynamics of population evolution. It is shown that the system undergoes period doubling bifurcation, saddle-node bifurcation, and Neimark-Sacker bifurcation by using center manifold theorem and bifurcation theory. Numerical simulations are presented not only to illustrate our results with the theoretical analysis, but also to exhibit the complex dynamical behaviors, such as the period-3, 6 orbits, cascade of period-doubling bifurcation in period-2, 4, 8, and the chaotic sets. These results reveal richer dynamics of the discrete model compared with the model in Tao et al., 1999. The analysis and results in this paper are interesting in mathematics and biology.

In this paper, the well-known Vallis model for El Niño is analyzed for the parameter condition [Formula: see text]. The conditions for the stability of the equilibrium points are derived. The condition for Hopf bifurcation occurring in the system for [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are investigated. The multistability feature of the Vallis model when [Formula: see text] is explained with forward and backward continuation bifurcation plots and with the coexisting attractors. The creation of period doubling followed by their annihilation via inverse period-doubling bifurcation known as antimonotonicity occurrence in the Vallis model for [Formula: see text] is presented for the first time in the literature.

A delayed SEIRS epidemic model with vertical transmission in computer network is considered. Sufficient conditions for local stability of the positive equilibrium and existence of local Hopf bifurcation are obtained by analyzing distribution of the roots of the associated characteristic equation. Furthermore, the direction of the local Hopf bifurcation and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions are determined by using the normal form theory and center manifold theorem. Finally, a numerical example is presented to verify the theoretical analysis.

A PI hydroturbine governing system with saturation and double delays is generated in small perturbation. The nonlinear dynamic behavior of the system is investigated. More precisely, at first, we analyze the stability and Hopf bifurcation of the PI hydroturbine governing system with double delays under the four different cases. Corresponding stability theorem and Hopf bifurcation theorem of the system are obtained at equilibrium points. And then the stability of periodic solution and the direction of the Hopf bifurcation are illustrated by using the normal form method and center manifold theorem. We find out that the stability and direction of the Hopf bifurcation are determined by three parameters. The results have great realistic significance to guarantee the power system frequency stability and improve the stability of the hydropower system. At last, some numerical examples are given to verify the correctness of the theoretical results.

Abstract Nonstationary response of a two-degrees-of-freedom system with quadratic coupling under a time varying modulated amplitude sinusoidal excitation is studied. The nonlinearly coupled pitch and roll ship model is based on Nayfeh, Mook and Marshall’s work for the case of stationary excitation. The ship model has a 2:1 internal resonance and is excited near the resonance of the pitch mode. The modulated excitation (F0 + F1 cos ωt) cosQt is used to model a narrow band sea-wave excitation. The response demonstrates a variety of bifurcations, loss of stability, and chaos phenomena that are not present in the stationary case. We consider here the periodically modulated response. Chaotic response of the system is discussed in a separate paper. Several approximate solutions, under both small and large modulating amplitudes F1, are obtained and compared with the exact one. The stability of an exact solution with one mode having zero amplitude is studied. Loss of stability in this case involves either a rapid transition from one of two stable (in the stationary sense) branches to another, or a period doubling bifurcation. From Floquet theory, various stability boundary diagrams are obtained in F1 and F0 parameter space which can be used to predict the various transition phenomena and the period-2 bifurcations. The study shows that both the modulation parameters F1 and ω (the modulating frequency) have great effect on the stability boundaries. Because of the modulation, the stable area is greatly expanded, and the stationary bifurcation point can be exceeded without loss of stability. Decreasing ω can make the stability boundary very complicated. For very small ω the response can make periodic transitions between the two (pseudo) stable solutions.

This paper is devoted to the study of an SIRS computer virus propagation model with two delays and multistate antivirus measures. We demonstrate that the system loses its stability and a Hopf bifurcation occurs when the delay passes through the corresponding critical value by choosing the possible combination of the two delays as the bifurcation parameter. Moreover, the direction of the Hopf bifurcation and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions are determined by means of the center manifold theorem and the normal form theory. Finally, some numerical simulations are performed to illustrate the obtained results.

We investigate a modified delayed Leslie-Gower model under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We give the stability analysis of the equilibria of the model and show the existence of Hopf bifurcation at the positive equilibrium under some conditions. Furthermore, we investigate the stability and direction of bifurcating periodic orbits by using normal form theorem and the center manifold theorem.

A simple delayed neural network model with four neurons is considered. Linear stability of the model is investigated by analyzing the associated characteristic equation. It is found that Hopf bifurcation occurs when the sum of four delays varies and passes a sequence of critical values. The stability and direction of the Hopf bifurcation are determined by applying the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. An example is given and numerical simulations are performed to illustrate the obtained results. Meanwhile, the bifurcation set is provided in the appropriate parameter plane.

AbstractThe stability and Hopf bifurcation of a delayed SIS epidemic model with double epidemic hypothesis are investigated in this paper. We first study the stability of the unique positive equilibrium of the model in four cases, and we obtain the stability conditions through analyzing the distribution of characteristic roots of the corresponding linearized system. Moreover, we choosing the delay as bifurcation parameter and the existence of Hopf bifurcation is investigated in detail. We can derive explicit formulas for determining the direction of the Hopf bifurcation and the stability of bifurcation periodic solution by center manifold theorem and normal form theory. Finally, we perform the numerical simulations for justifying the theoretical results.

Abstract In this paper, numerical and experimental investigations conducted into the dynamics and stability of partial immersion milling operations are presented. A mechanics based model is used for simulations of a wide range of milling operations and instabilities that arise due to regeneration and/or impact effects are studied. Poincaré sections are used to assess the stability of motions. The studies reveal that apart from Hopf bifurcation of a periodic motion, a period-doubling bifurcation of a periodic motion may also lead to chatter in partial immersion milling operations. Issues such as tooth contact time variation and structure of stability charts are also discussed.
