We study isometries on algebras of the Lipschitz maps and the continuously differentiable maps with the values in a commutative unital C⁎-algebra. A precise proof of a theorem of Jarosz concerning isometries on spaces of continuous functions is exhibited.

AbstractLet X and Y be compact Hausdorff spaces, E be a real or complex Banach space and F be a real or complex locally convex topological vector space. In this paper we study a pair of linear operators S, T : A(X, E) → C(Y, F) from a subspace A(X, E) of C(X, E) to C(Y, F), which are jointly separating, in the sense that Tf and Sg have disjoint cozeros whenever f and g have disjoint cozeros. We characterize the general form of such maps between certain classes of vector-valued (as well as scalar-valued) spaces of continuous functions including spaces of vector-valued Lipschitz functions, absolutely continuous functions and continuously differentiable functions. The results can be applied to a pair T : A(X) → C(Y) and S : A(X, E) → C(Y, F) of linear operators, where A(X) is a regular Banach function algebra on X, such that f ⋅ g = 0 implies Tf ⋅ Sg = 0, for all f ∈ A(X) and g ∈ A(X, E). If T and S are jointly separating bijections between Banach algebras of scalar-valued functions of this class, then they induce a homeomorphism between X and Y and, furthermore, T−1 and S−1 are also jointly separating maps.

AbstractWe are concerned here with the development of a more general real case of the classical theorem of Gelfand ([5], 3.1.20), which represents a complex commutative unital Banach algebra as an algebra of continuous functions defined on a compact Hausdorff space. In § 1 we point out that when looking at real algebras there is not always a one-to-one correspondence between the maximal ideals of the algebra B, denoted ℳ, and the set of unital (real) algebra homomorphisms from B into C, denoted by ΦB. This simple point and subsequent observations lead to a theory of representations of real commutative unital Banach algebras where elements are represented as sections of a bundle of real fields associated with the algebra (Theorem 3.5). After establishing this representation theorem, we look into the question of when a real commutative Banach algebra is already complex. There is a natural topological obstruction which we delineate. Theorem 4.8 gives equivalent conditions which determine whether such an algebra is already complex. Finally, in § 5 we abstractly characterize those section algebras which appear as the target algebras for our Gelfand transform. We dub these algebras “almost complex C*- algebras” and provide a natural classification scheme.

Abstract Galego and Samuel showed that if K, L are metrizable, compact, Hausdorff spaces, then $C(K)\widehat{\otimes}_\pi C(L)$ is c0-saturated if and only if it is subprojective if and only if K and L are both scattered. We remove the hypothesis of metrizability from their result and extend it from the case of the twofold projective tensor product to the general n-fold projective tensor product to show that for any $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and compact, Hausdorff spaces K1, …, K n , $\widehat{\otimes}_{\pi, i=1}^n C(K_i)$ is c0-saturated if and only if it is subprojective if and only if each K i is scattered.

Abstract.LetTbe a bounded linear operator on a Banach spaceW, assumeWandYare in normed duality, and assume thatThas adjointT†relative toY. In this paper, conditions are given that imply that for all λ≠0, λ−Tand λ −T†maintain important standard operator relationships. For example, under the conditions given, λ −Thas closed range if, and only if, λ −T†has closed range. These general results are shown to apply to certain classes of integral operators acting on spaces of continuous functions.

We study a one-parameter family of convolutional operators acting in Lebesgue Lp spaces. The case of integral kernels given by the Fourier coefficients is considered. It is established that the condition of the coefficients being quasiconvex ensures the boundedness of the corresponding maximal operators. The limiting behavior of families in the metrics of spaces of continuous functions and Lp, p ≥ 1, classes is studied, and their convergence is obtained almost everywhere. The ways of possible generalizations and distributions are indicated.
