The chemical modification or impregnation through preparing the wood polymer composites (WPCs) can effectively reduce the hygroscopicity as well as can improve the acoustic properties of wood. On the other hand, a small amount of nanoclay into the chemical mixture can further improve the different properties of the WPCs through the preparation of wood polymer nanocomposites (WPNCs). Kayu Malam wood species with styrene (St), vinyl acetate (VA), and montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclay were used for the preparation of WPNCs. The acoustic properties such as specific dynamic Young’s modulus (Ed/γ), internal friction (Q−1), and acoustic conversion efficiency (ACE) of wood were examined using free-free flexural vibration. It was observed that the chemically impregnated wood composite showed a higher value of Ed/γ than raw wood and the nanoclay-loaded wood nanocomposite showed the highest value. The reverse trend was observed in the case of Q−1. On the other hand, chemical impregnation has a minor effect on ACE of wood for musical instruments. The results suggested that the chemically impregnated Kayu Malam wood polymer nanocomposite (WPNC) is suitable for making soundboards of violin and guitar instruments to be played longer without losing tone quality.

Abstract Guigo II is commonly known and praised among specialists of Western mysticism for his Scala claustralium, a work that presents a spiritual program for cloistered monks. His Meditations, on the other hand, have usually been relegated to the margin of attention. The First Meditation, in particular, is generally regarded as a minor piece. The paper argues, however, that a new approach can make better sense of the First Meditation, while also enabling us to recognize its specific function and value. Seen from this new perspective, Guigo’s purpose with the text is to train and exercise his readers’ minds according to the spiritual program laid out in the Scala. The paper shows that the First Meditation realizes that goal, surprisingly, by having the same essential features that Umberto Eco found in the ‘open works’ of the Western avant-garde.

Strain A/J mice made secondary indirect plaque-forming cell (PFC) responses to azobenzenearsonate (ABA) conjugates of giant keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), a thymic-dependent antigen, but not to conjugates of Ficoll, a T-independent antigen. ABA-Ficoll was also unable to elicit a response in animals primed with ABA-KLH, which have an expanded anti-ABA memory cell pool. On the other hand, ABA-Ficoll rendered mice unresponsive to ABA-KLH when administered before priming or boosting with the T-dependent immunogen. Hence, the T-independent antigen was able to tolerize but unable to trigger B-memory cells responsive to the T-dependent antigen. A/J mice immunized with dinitrophenyl conjugates of Ficoll or bovine IgG (BGG) made vigorous IgM and IgG PFC responses. PFC responses to ABA-KLH and 2,4-dinitrophenyl (DNP)-BGG were abrogated by depleting mice of C3 with cobra venom factor, whereas the IgM and IgG PFC responses to DNP-Ficoll were unaffected. B lymphocytes were fractionated on the basis of receptors for C3 and the subpopulations were assayed for in vitro PFC responses to DNP-Ficoll. Very little response was obtained from complement receptor lymphocyte [CRL(+)] B cells, whereas CRL(-) cells were more responsive than unfractionated B cells. Both populations responded to a polyclonal B-cell mitogen (lipopolysaccharide). On the other hand, the in vitro PFC response to a T-dependent antigen (sheep erythrocytes) correlated with the presence of CRL(+) B cells in the cultures. However, a minor component of this response, sensitive to anti-Thy-1 serum, was made by CRL(-) B cells, indicating the existence of subpopulations of T-dependent B cells with different signalling requirements. The results suggest that most B cells responsive to T-dependent antigens possess receptors for C3 and that C3 plays an obligatory role in the response of these cells. A distinct subpopulation of B cells which lack C3 receptors respond to T-independent antigens. The precursors of PFC for the ABA epitope reside largely or exclusively in the CRL(+) compartment in A/J mice, whereas precursors for the DNP determinant are found in both compartments.

La autotraducción es un fenómeno que siempre ha estado presente, sobre todo, en aquellos sistemas socioculturales de gran riqueza lingüística y cultural. Este es el caso del sistema peninsular, donde cada vez más autores bilingües deciden escribir sus obras en una lengua minoritaria y, después, autotraducirlas al español. En este trabajo, se toma como objeto de análisis la poesía autotraducida del asturiano al español de Xuan Bello. Así, se observará si la autotraducción permite a este autor traductor, por un lado, trasladar sus reivindicaciones culturales a otro sistema ajeno al asturiano; y, por otro lado, definir su identidad individual.Palabras clave: autotraducción, poesía, asturiano, español, cultura, identidad.Self-translation is a phenomenon which has always been present, most of all in those sociocultural systems characterized by both their linguistic and cultural richness. One of those is the Spanish peninsular system where more and more bilingual authors tend to write their works in a minor language and subsequently translate them into Spanish. The aim of this paper is to research Xuan Bello’s self-translated poetry from Asturian into Spanish. That way it will be considered whether selftranslation helps this author-translator: on the one hand, to transfer his cultural demands; on the other hand, to define his individual identity.Keywords: self-translation, poetry, Asturian, Spanish, culture, identity.

Mutations in the Calreticulin (CALR) gene were identified in cases of myeloproriferative neoplasms (MPNs), and various functions of the CALR mutant protein are being elucidated. On the other hand, few data are available on the role of CALR in the hematopoietic system. The knockout (KO) mice of Calr are impaired in expression of transcription factors necessary for cardiac development and are embryonic lethal. To clarify the role of CALR in normal hematopoiesis and MPN pathogenesis, we generated hematopoietic cell-specific Calr KO mice. Mice carrying floxed allele targeted exons 4-7 of Calr (Calrf/+ mice) and Calr heterozygous KO mice (Calr+/− mice) (Tokuhiro et al., Sci Rep 2015) were crossed with Mx1-Cre transgenic mice and obtained mice with three genotypes; Mx1-cre;Calr+/+, Mx1-cre;Calr+/−, and Mx1-cre;Calrf/−. Floxed alleles were then deleted by intraperitoneal injection with polyinosinic: polycytidilic acid. No differences were found in the peripheral blood (PB) leukocyte count, hemoglobin levels, or platelet count among the three genotypes of mice. The proportions of Mac1+ or Gr1+ myeloid lineage cells, B220+ B cells, and CD3+ T cells among the three groups were comparable. In the bone marrow (BM), cell pellet from Mx1-cre;Calrf/− mice appeared anemic and the proportion of CD71+/Ter119+ erythroid cells and the number of CFU-E were significantly lower in Mx1-cre;Calrf/− BM cells compared to the other two genotypes of BM cells. On the other hand, no difference was found in other mature cells such as myeloid, T, B, or CD41+ megakaryocytes (Mks) in BM. As for HSCs and progenitors, Mx1-cre;Calrf/− mice exhibited a higher proportion of MPP and GMP compared to the other two genotypes of mice. We found no difference in other progenitor compartments including long- and short-term HSCs among the three groups. In contrast to the minor effect on BM and PB cells, The spleen weight in Mx1-cre;Calrf/− mice was about 2-fold heavier than that in Mx1-cre;Calr+/+ mice. In spleens from Mx1-cre;Calrf/− mice, the border between the white and red pulp was obscured. Mks and maturing myeloid cells had markedly infiltrated into the red pulp. In FACS analysis, mature myeloid cells, erythroid cells, and Mks were significantly increased in spleens from Mx1-cre;Calrf/− mice compared to those from the other two genotypes of mice. HSCs and most types of myeloid progenitors were also increased in the spleen. Hematopoiesis in the spleen may compensate for the reduced erythropoiesis in the BM, as no anemia was seen in Mx1-cre;Calrf/− mice. No onset of leukemia or myelofibrosis was observed, and no difference in survival was seen among the three groups following observation for 2 years. As CALR plays a role as a chaperone in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) during protein synthesis, we searched for proteins with expression that was reduced by Calr deficiency. The quantitative differences of proteins in Mac1+/Gr1+ BM cells between Mx1-cre;Calrf/− and Mx1-cre;Calr+/+ mice were compared using proteomics analysis by 2DICAL, a shotgun proteomics analysis system (Ono et al. Cellular Proteomics 2006). We found that only a few proteins, including myeloperoxidase and CALR itself, were reduced, and conversely, many proteins were increased by the absence of CALR. List of differentially upregulated proteins higher than those in WT samples were analyzed using Metascape (http://metascape.org) to determine enriched pathways. The most enriched cluster was "protein processing in the ER", and 19 out of 76 upregulated (>1.8-fold) proteins were included in this cluster. In real-time PCR analysis, we confirmed that ER chaperon genes (BiP, Grp94, Hsp40, Pdia3, Pdia4, Pdia6) and genes involved in ER-related degradation (Trap, Bap31, Derl1, p97) were significantly upregulated in Mx1-cre;Calrf/− myeloid cells. These observations suggested that chaperone dysfunction due to Calr deficiency is compensated by upregulation of unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway. In summary, Calr deficiency induced erythroid hypoplasia in the BM, and induced splenomegaly and extramedullary hematopoiesis. This suggests that the amount of WT CALR expression remaining in CALR mutant cells may modify the phenotype of MPN patients. Absence of myeloperoxidase protein and upregulation of UPR pathway in myeloid cells from Calr KO mice indicates that CALR plays a significant role as a chaperone also in hematopoiesis and that CALR deficient cells are exposed to ER stress. AbstractThis research is conducted qualitatively and aimed at patterning and describing clause and sentence structure in Lampung language through the configuration of its constituents. Regarding the constituents, Lampung has two types of clause: minor and major clauses. A minor clause is indicated by only one constituent, which is commonly a subject, predicate or adjunct. Regarding its function, it can be classified as vocative, shown by exclamation (Wuy!, Huy!); a greeting, as shown by an expression (tabikpun ngalam pukha); and an Arabic greeting (assalamualaikum). On the other hand, a major clause minimally consists of a subject and predicate, and apart from these there can also be an object, complement and adverbial. Furthermore, this research finds various categories that can act as predicative constituents: they are a verb/verbal phrase, adjective/adjective phrase, and noun/nominal phrase. Additionally, a copular verb (iyulah) and existential marker (wat) can also be the predicate. This research also reveals that in a sentence two or more clauses are connected by a conjunction, and then this conjunction becomes an indicator of dependent clauses. Also, a dependent clause can be found after the subject or the object of the independent clause.

The effect of aging treatments on the mechanical behavior of Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al (Ti153) alloy was evaluated in the present study. Properties of the two-step aged specimens were also compared with those of the one-step aged specimens. The second aging treatment, which was performed at 426o°C for 24 h, apparently raised the tensile strength at the expense of the notched tensile strength for the specimens previously aged at 426°C or below. On the other hand, the second-step aging had a minor effect on further hardening of the specimens prior to aging at 538°C and 593°C. In general, theJ-integral value (fracture toughness) had the same trend as that of the notch brittleness of the specimens. Overall, the specimens subjected to the two-step aging treatment did not show any advantage over the specimens subject to one-step aging treatment.

On the one hand, there is a great number of « national » fictions. To various degrees (patriotic, nationalistic) and consciously or not, these fictions participate in the construction of a nation. On the other hand, there are also a lot of fictions that we can characterize as cosmopolitan or postnational and which are situated outside any clear national boundaries. On the contrary, one can count very few fictions on the construction of a European supranationality. To my knowledge, Constellation by Alain Lacroix (2008) is the only one in French and that is the one I am going to write about in this essay. My goal here is threefold. It is first to show that although the interpreter seems to play a minor role (according to the number of pages) and although she is apparently considered an insignificant quantity by both male protagonists, as her regular and obsessive return in the text proves it she is actually important since she haunts the characters sexually and ideologically. I will also show that this haunting spreads through the whole novel through the issue of the interpretation of signs. The second goal is to show that the interpreter, who is explicitly presented as an impersonation of Europe, actually incarnates the ambivalence of any « europeanist » project. She is indeed a bridge not only between two languages & cultures but also between both faces of any European policy. The first one, concrete, tries to incorporate the real life of the Europeans, their daily concerns which themselves are often inscribed within their « national habitus», and the other one to exceed it within a transnational project which is often perceived as too abstract. Finally, I will conclude showing how Constellation “foreignizes” (Venuti, 2008, 6) its translation of the European realities, not by its choices but by the choice of avant-garde esthetic techniques.

It is well understood that genetic differences among hosts contribute to variation in pathogen susceptibility and the ability to associate with symbionts. However, it remains unclear just how influential host genes are in shaping the overall microbiome. Studies of both animal and plant microbial communities indicate that host genes impact species richness and the abundances of individual taxa. Analyses of beta diversity (that is, overall similarity), on the other hand, often conclude that hosts play a minor role in shaping microbial communities. In this review, we discuss recent attempts to identify the factors that shape host microbial communities and whether our understanding of these communities is affected by the traits chosen to represent them.

Abstract This paper presents a model that connects phonotactic exceptionality to perceptibility, more specifically to functional load and acoustic detail. I identify two patterns in exceptionality: lexical exceptions and phonotactic vacillation, where the former is restricted to specific lexical items, while the latter affects two contrastive sound categories as a whole. Through the example of Hungarian word-final phonotactics, the Model of Perceptual Categorization associates these two patterns with different functional load and acoustic properties of contrasts, that lead to two categorizational malfunctions. On the one hand, phonotactic vacillation is a result of a frequent failure to categorize ambiguous tokens: low functional load coinciding with little acoustic difference. On the other hand, lexical exceptions are systematic categorizational mistakes brought about by salient categories – in this case distributional generalizations are hindered by interference from mislabeled tokens.

A number of recent experiments have seemed to imply that the basic associations of learning are formed in an all-or-none manner. However, the evidence provided by these experiments has been essentially indirect since the presence of an association has been assessed by an all-or-none method, viz. simple recall. By allowing the subject more than one attempt at recall or recognition more direct evidence can be obtained. All-or- none learning implies that the probability of success during further attempts will be at the chance level. The experiments described show that this is not the case for the stimulus materials used. On the other hand the uncertainty in bits during further attempts was a fairly high proportion of the uncertainty expected on the all-or-none hypothesis. For this reason the results may indicate only a minor breakdown of the hypothesis. In a retention test administered after a week, fewer first-attempt successes were achieved than in the immediate test but, despite this, the uncertainty after a first- attempt failure was about the same as in the immediate test. The experiments also incorporated a second test of the all-or-none hypothesis. This involved comparing 2-choice and 4-choice recognition scores and recognition scores with recall scores. After corrections for guessing, these scores should be identical, if the hypothesis is correct. Results of this corrected-comparisons test tended to support those of the further-attempts test.
