With the fast development of rail transit, the environmental vibration problems caused by subways have received increasing attention. A 3D finite element model was built in this study to investigate the ground vibrations induced by the moving load operating in the parallel twin tunnels. Compared to the model consisting of a single tunnel that was commonly adopted in the past studies, a pair of tunnels is considered and the surrounding medium of the tunnels is taken as a saturated porous medium. The governing equations of the 3D finite element method modeling of the saturated poroelastic soil have been derived according to Biot’s theory. Computed results showed that the dynamic response of the twin-tunnel model is greater than that of the single tunnel model. And the spacing between two tunnels, tunnel buried depth, and load moving speed are the essential parameters to determine the dynamic response of the tunnel and soil.

Currently dynamic response of the pavement structure is widely studied in pavement engineering. A 3D direct vehicle-pavement coupling dynamic model was developed to describe the pavement dynamic responses in this paper. The moving vehicle was simplified as spring-dashpot components, and the pavement structure was simulated using three-dimension finite element model. Based on Newton iteration and central difference integration algorithm, the static and dynamic coupling reactions between the pavement structure and vehicle were considered using finite element platform ABAQUS. The numerical results fit analytic results very well in static analysis and fit experiment results in dynamic analysis well too. The simulated results indicate that the dynamic pavement surface deflection is much higher than the situation in static analysis, due to the overlapping effect. This phenomenon enhances when vehicle speed increases. A discontinuous zone of shear stress was observed on the base surface between the location under moving load and the location the moving load just passed. It was also found that the vertical fluctuation exists on the vehicle even if there is no roughness on the pavement surface. In general, the developed 3-D direct vehicle-pavement coupling dynamic model was validated to be effective on evaluating pavement dynamic responses.

This paper investigates the dynamic responses of multi-bay frames with identical bay lengths subjected to a transverse single moving load and successive moving loads with a constant interval at a constant speed. The effects of the bay length and the speed of the moving load on the response of the multi-bay frame subjected to a single point load are investigated numerically by the finite element method. A computer code is developed by using MATLAB to perform the finite element analysis. The Newmark method is employed to solve for the dynamic responses of the multi-bay frame. With this, the dynamic response of the frame subjected to successive moving loads with a constant interval is investigated. Also, the resonance and cancellation speeds are determined by using the 3D relationship of speed parameter-force span length to beam length ratio-dynamic magnification factor and the associated contour lines. The maximum impact factor of a 1-bay frame and multi-bay frames under single moving load are determined at the specific speed parameters. Those values are independent of elastic modulus, area moment of inertia, beam/column lengths of the frame and also the number of bays forming the frame. It is also found that the first resonance response in the vertical direction of the frame is related to the second mode of vibration.

Background: Finite element simulation has become an important method for the mechanism research of metal machining in recent years. Objective: To study the cutting mechanism of hardened 45 steel (45HRC), and improve the processing efficiency and quality. Methods: A 3D oblique finite element model of traditional turning of hardened 45 steel based on ABAQUS was established in this paper. The feasibility of the finite element model was verified by experiment, and the influence of cutting parameters on cutting force was predicted by single factor experiment and orthogonal experiment based on simulation. Finally, the empirical formula of cutting force was fitted by MATLAB. Besides, a lot of patents on 3D finite element simulation for metal machining were studied. Results: The results show that the 3D oblique finite element model can predict three direction cutting force, the 3D chip shape, and other variables of metal machining and the prediction errors of three direction cutting force are 5%, 9.02%, and 8.56%. The results of single factor experiment and orthogonal experiment are in good agreement with similar research, which shows that the model can meet the needs for engineering application. Besides, the empirical formula and the prediction results of cutting force are helpful for the parameters optimization and tool design. Conclusion: A 3D oblique finite element model of traditional turning of hardened 45 steel is established, based on ABAQUS, and the validation is carried out by comparing with experiment.

A novel, improved equivalent circuit model of double-sided linear induction motors (DLIMs) is proposed, which takes the skin effect and the nonzero leakage reactance of the secondary, longitudinal, and transverse end effects into consideration. Firstly, the traditional equivalent circuit with longitudinal and transverse end effects are briefly reviewed. Additionally, the correction coefficients for longitudinal and transverse end effects derived by one-dimensional analysis models are given. Secondly, correction factors for skin effect, which reflects the inhomogeneous air gap magnetic field vertically, and the secondary leakage reactance are derived by the quasi-two-dimensional analysis model. Then, the proposed equivalent circuit is presented, and the excitation reactance and secondary resistance are modified by the correction coefficients derived from the three analytical models. Finally, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element model is used to verify the proposed equivalent circuit model under varying air gap width and frequency, and the results are also compared with that of the traditional equivalent circuit models. The calculated thrust characteristics by the proposed equivalent circuit and 3D finite element model are experimentally validated under a constant voltage–frequency drive.

The oil-immersed transformer tank is an outside package component of the transformer body. The sealing quality and mechanical strength of the oil tank are affected by the deformation after loading. In this paper, the 3D finite element model of oil-immersed transformer tank is established. The oil-immersed transformer tank deformation is obtained by FEA under the condition of vacuuming. A series of experiments about the deformation of the oil-immersed transformer tank are carried out. Comparing experiment results with FEA results, FEA results are agrees well with the experiments’. It can save the time consumed on designing the oil tank, and has the directive function for the whole design.

Abstract Finite Element Model Updating has for objective to increase the correlation between the experimental dynamic responses of a structure and the predictions from a model. Among different initial choices, these procedures need to establish a set of representative parameters to be updated in which some are in real error and some are not. It is therefore important to select the correct properties that have to be updated to ensure that no marginal corrections are introduced. In this paper the standard localization criteria are presented and a technique to separate the global localization criteria in family-based criteria for damped structures is introduced. The methods are analyzed and applied to both numerical and experimental examples; a clear enhancement of the results is noticed using the family-based criteria. A simple way to qualify the stability of a localization method to noise is presented.
