As cities across the world grow and the mobility of populations increases, there has also been a corresponding increase in the number of vehicles on roads. The result of this has been a proliferation of challenges for authorities with regard to road traffic management. A consequence of this has been congestion of traffic, more accidents, and pollution. Accidents are a still major cause of death, despite the development of sophisticated systems for traffic management and other technologies linked with vehicles. Hence, it is necessary that a common system for accident management is developed. For instance, traffic congestion in most urban areas can be alleviated by the real-time planning of routes. However, the designing of an efficient route planning algorithm to attain a globally optimal vehicle control is still a challenge that needs to be solved, especially when the unique preferences of drivers are considered. The aim of this paper is to establish an accident management system that makes use of vehicular ad hoc networks coupled with systems that employ cellular technology in public transport. This system ensures the possibility of real-time communication among vehicles, ambulances, hospitals, roadside units, and central servers. In addition, the accident management system is able to lessen the amount of time required to alert an ambulance that it is required at an accident scene by using a multihop optimal forwarding algorithm. Moreover, an optimal route planning algorithm (ORPA) is proposed in this system to improve the aggregate spatial use of a road network, at the same time bringing down the travel cost of operating a vehicle. This can reduce the incidence of vehicles being stuck on congested roads. Simulations are performed to evaluate ORPA, and the results are compared with existing algorithms. The evaluation results provided evidence that ORPA outperformed others in terms of average ambulance speed and travelling time. Finally, our system makes it easier for ambulance to quickly make their way through traffic congestion so that the chance of saving lives is increased.

<p><strong>Vehicular traffic is continuously increasing around the world, especially in urban areas, and the resulting congestion ha</strong><strong>s</strong><strong> be</strong><strong>come</strong><strong> a major concern to automobile users. The popular static electric traffic light controlling system can no longer sufficiently manage the traffic volume in large cities where real time traffic control is paramount to deciding best route. The proposed mobile traffic management system provides users with traffic information on congested roads using weighted sensors. A prototype of the system was implemented using Java SE Development Kit 8 and Google map. The model </strong><strong>was</strong><strong> simulated and the performance was </strong><strong>assessed</strong><strong> using response time, delay and throughput. Results showed that</strong><strong>,</strong><strong> mobile devices are capable of assisting road users’ in faster decision making by providing real-time traffic information and recommending alternative routes.</strong></p>

Intelligence traffic management system (ITMS) provides effective and efficient solutions toward the road traffic management and decision-making problems, and thus helps to reduce fuel consumption and emission of greenhouse gases. Software-based real-time bi-directional TMS with a neural network was proposed and implemented. The proposed TMS solves a decision problem, dynamic road weights calculation, using different environmental, road and vehicle related decision attributes. In addition, the development of the real-time operational models as well as their solving challenges has increased in a rapid manner. Therefore, the authors integrate the design and development of a neural-based complete real-time operational ITMS, with the combination of software modules including traffic monitoring, road weight updating, forecasting, and optimum route planning decision. Collecting, extracting the insights and inherit meaning, and modeling the tremendous amount of continuous data is a challenging task. A discussion is also included with the future improvements on ITMS.

Abstract This paper introduces a new scheme for road traffic management in smart cities, aimed at reducing road traffic congestion. The scheme is based on a combination of searching, updating, and allocation techniques (SUA). An SUA approach is proposed to reduce the processing time for forecasting the conditions of all road sections in real-time, which is typically considerable and complex. It searches for the shortest route based on historical observations, then computes travel time forecasts based on vehicular location in real-time. Using updated information, which includes travel time forecasts and accident forecasts, the vehicle is allocated the appropriate section. The novelty of the SUA scheme lies in its updating of vehicles in every time to reduce traffic congestion. Furthermore, the SUA approach supports autonomy and management by self-regulation, which recommends its use in smart cities that support internet of things (IoT) technologies.

Transport has a great impact on human activities but contributes to many negative phenomena occurring in road traffic, for example, road traffic accidents, emission of toxic exhaust fumes into the atmosphere and a high share of cars in road traffic. For the above reasons, many initiatives have been taken in the field of road traffic management and urban logistics. Based on a literature review, it was found that the problem of the phenomenon of traffic congestion in urban areas remains an ongoing issue. In the first part of this article, the theoretical issues of traffic flow and congestion formation in the city road networks were presented. While the second part outlines the situation of transport congestion in 10 Polish cities based on the worldwide TomTom Traffic Index in the years 2008-2018. This study is a brief analysis of the trends relating to transport congestion based on the TomTom Traffic Index in these cities.

Abstract Traffic congestion problem has been noticed to have a serious impact on the economy of the country in terms of time wastage, energy consumption costs, human loss and environmental effects. Different strategies have been used so far all over the world as shown in the literature review. Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is a multi-technology approach that can help to handle the issues and create a complete congestion reduction framework. This paper presents a case study for implementing automated road management system using networks in Tanzania, where three cities highly affected by traffic congestion have been studied. Study results show that these cities have not yet implemented new technologies in road traffic management; instead the traffic is controlled using traffic police officers and traffic lights only. The traffic lights use an old technology that cannot manage traffic in relation to the real-time situations. This study proposes components for a framework, which will assist automation in road traffic management. From the review of various existing ITS of which Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and Advanced Travel Information System (ATIS) are subsystems, we have identified the possibility to integrate the two sub-systems within the framework. Three-phase traffic theory has been referred, FOTO and ASDA models are applied to the automatic recognition and tracking of congested spatiotemporal traffic patterns on roads.


Many cities in the world face jamming problems in road traffic, particularly in metropolitan cities. At present the traffic controlling systems aresemiautomatic in nature. With the introduction of IoT in road traffic management systems, it revolutionizes the field of road traffic management system and improves the road traffic congestion problem.This paper proposes an IoT-based road traffic management system for metropolitan cities. The proposed system provides the hassle free movement of the vehicles to avoid inconvenience and reroute the higher priority vehicles. Experimental results show that the proposed system gives higher success rate for the low traffic density in the lane.

Managing mobility, both of people and goods, in cities is a thorny issue. The travel needs of urban populations are increasing and put pressure on transport infrastructure. The Moroccan cities are no exception and will struggle, in the short term, to respond to the challenges of the acceleration of the phenomenon of urbanization and the increase in demand for mobility. This will inevitably prevent them from turning into smart cities. The term smart certainly alludes to better use of technologies, but smart mobility is also defined as “a set of coordinated actions intended to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and environmental sustainability of cities” [1]. The term mobility highlights the preponderance of humans over infrastructure and vehicles. Faced with traffic congestion, the solutions currently adopted which consist of fitting out and widening the infrastructures, only encourage more trips and report the problem with more critical consequences. It is true that beyond a certain density of traffic, even Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are not useful. The concept of dynamic lane management or Advanced Traffic Management (ATM) opens up new perspectives. Its objective is to manage and optimize road traffic in a variable manner, in space and in time. This article is a summary of the development of a road infrastructure dedicated to Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV), the first of its kind in Morocco. It aims to avoid the discomfort caused by trucks in the urban road network of the city of Casablanca. This research work is an opportunity to reflect on the introduction of ITS and ATM to ensure optimal use of existing infrastructure before embarking on heavy and irreversible infrastructure projects.

Vehicular traffic has increased across all over the world especially in urban areas due to many reasons including the reduction in the cost of vehicles, degradation of the quality of public transport services and increased wealth of people. The traffic congestion created by these vehicles causes many problems. Increased environment pollution is one of the most serious negative effects of traffic congestion. Noxious gases and fine particles emitted by vehicles affect people in different ways depending on their age and present health conditions. Professionals and policy makers have devised schemes for better managing traffic in congested areas. These schemes suffer from many shortcomings including the inability to adapt to dynamic changes of traffic patterns. With the development of technology, new applications like Google maps help drivers to select less congested routes. But, the identification of the best route takes only the present traffic condition on different road segments presently. In this paper the authors propose a system that helps drivers select routes based on the present and expected environment pollution levels at critical points in a given area.

In this paper, the route-planning problems of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in uncertain and adversarial environment are addressed, including not only single-mission route planning in known a priori environment, but also the route replanning in partially known and mission-changeable environments. A mission-adaptable hybrid route-planning algorithm based on flight roadmap is proposed, which combines existing global and local methods (Dijkstra algorithm, SAS and D*) into a two-level framework. The environment information and constraints for UAV are integrated into the procedure of building flight roadmap and searching for routes. The route-planning algorithm utilizes domain-specific knowledge and operates in real time with near-optimal solution quality, which is important to uncertain and adversarial environment. Other planners do not provide all of the functionality, namely real-time planning and replanning, near-optimal solution quality, and the ability to model complex 3D constraints.
