The influence of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and solvent extraction of oils from cloudberry, bilberry, and black currant seeds on the yield, chemical properties, and recovery of antioxidant compounds was investigated. SFE was performed for 1 h at 350 bar and at 50°C and 80°C. Fatty acids, vitamin E, carotenoids, and free radical-scavenging activity (DPPH) were assayed. SFE at 80°C resulted in higher oil yields for cloudberry and black currant seeds. The oils were rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) (66.8%–75.9% w/w), with high percentages of linoleic and α-linolenic acids. The black currant seed extracts had the highest concentrations of vitamin E (range, 113.0–241.8 mg/100 g oil) and carotenoids (range, 11.5–32.3 mg/100 g oil) and the highest antioxidant activity. The cloudberry seed oils also had high antioxidant content and activity. These findings indicate the potential of SFE for the recovery of PUFA and antioxidant compounds in berry by-products.

A new original process has been set-up to obtain hydroxytyrosol-enriched food by means of CO2 supercritical fluid extraction. The process is based on the direct adsorption of hydroxytyrosol on selected foodstuff (e.g., flour, whole-wheat flour, and sugar) when placed in contact with olive oil (which is known to contain this phenol) under controlled temperature and pressure conditions of supercritical CO2. The transfer of the nutraceutical to the foodstuff was initially evaluated using a fortified olive oil model and was then applied to commercial olive oil and foodstuff. The yield of the hydroxytyrosol transfer was demonstrated to be quantitative. In order to prove the suitability of the final products, hydroxytyrosol-enriched flour was used to prepare a bread roll, which maintained the nutraceutical characteristics after the cooking. Finally, DPPH based experiments were performed to prove the radical scavenging activity of the functionalized foodstuff.

AbstractThe present study focuses on the standardization of the supercritical fluid extraction of the Bhut Jolokia (Capsicum chinense) which is abundantly grown in the north eastern region of India. The effect of process parameters pressure (75–225 bar), temperature (40–60 °C) and time (30–90 min) of oleoresin extraction process was studied. The standardized condition to obtain maximum extraction of Bhut Jolokia oleoresin was found to be 207 bar, 60 °C and 73 min. The oleoresin extract was analyzed for its antimicrobial, antioxidant and total phenolics content. Four strains of bacteria namely Escherichia coli (ATCC -11,229), Bacillus subtilis (ATCC- 11,774), Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC- 14,028) and Staphylococcus aureus (12,600) were used for the antimicrobial assay. It was observed that the highest inhibition was seen against E. coli, moderate inhibition was seen against S.aureus and S. typhi and partial/no zone of inhibition was observed against B. subtilis. The extract of Bhut Jolokia oleoresin showed radical scavenging activity of 58.6 ± 3.86% and total phenolics content of 4250 ± 2.26 mg GAE/100 g sample indicating Bhut Jolokia oleoresin as a good antioxidant and is also a good source of phenolic compounds.

Abstract The extraction of the antioxidant compounds from rosemary can be achieved by means of various processes, such as hydrodistillation, soxhlet extraction, microwave-accelerated hydrodistillation (MAHD) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). The aim of our study was to optimize SFE variables such as extraction pressure, extraction temperature and static extraction time for the maximum extraction of carnosol and carnosic acid from Venezuelan rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) leaves by using 23 full factorial and Box-Behnken designs and Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The chemical characterization of the supercritical fluid extracts was achieved by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the antioxidant activity was determined by the peroxide index assay. For the extraction of carnosol, the variables of extraction temperature and static extraction time were statistically significant, and for the extraction of carnosic acid, only the extraction temperature-static extraction time interaction was significant. At a fixed pressure, the highest extraction of carnosol and carnosic acid were achieved when the operational extraction conditions of extraction temperature and static extraction time were set at 48°C for 69 min and 64°C for 57 min, respectively. SFE extracts presented higher antioxidant activities than commercial and soxhlet extracts, and pure dibutyl hidroxytoluene (BHT). Since the carnosic acid/carnosol ratios presented in our SFE extracts are higher than those from other countries, possibly it would be expected that higher antioxidant activity values would be obtained for the Venezuelan extracts.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), a member of Zingiberacaeae, is used for Thai traditional medicine, flavoring, preservative, and coloring agent. In Southern Thailand, turmeric is a famous ingredient for food recipes. Not only is the ripened rhizome used for cuisine, but also the young rhizomes. Previous studies have indicated that a variety of turmeric products from the ripened rhizome are valuable source of antioxidant compounds. However, there are ambiguous data regarding the level of antioxidant activity of the young rhizome. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity of the young rhizomes by comparing to the ripened rhizome. TPC and antioxidant activity of aqueous and 80% methanolic extracts from the young turmeric grown in Southern Thailand were estimated using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and DPPH free radical scavenging activity (DPPH-RSA) assay, respectively. Results showed that the concentration of TPC determined in methanolic extract (19.80±0.25 mg GAE/ g extract) from the young rhizome was significantly higher than the corresponding aqueous extract (18.38±0.41 mg GAE/ g extract). The aqueous and methanolic extracts exhibited significant inhibition in DPPH-RSA with the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 5.88±0.70 mg/mL and 3.00±0.31 mg/mL, respectively. However, in comparison with the ripened rhizome, TPC and DPPH-RSA of the young rhizome were lower. These results indicate that the young rhizome grown in Southern Thailand could be a source of antioxidant compounds, but the ripened rhizome provides better antioxidant properties than the young rhizome.

Dibenz[b,f]azepine and its five derivatives bearing different functional groups were synthesized by known methods. The compounds thus synthesized were evaluated for antioxidant potential through different in vitro models such as (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity,ß-carotene-linoleic acid model system, reducing power assay and phosphomolybdenum method. Under our experimental condition among the synthesized compounds dibenz[b,f]azepine (a) and 10-methoxy-5H-dibenz[b,f]azepine (d) exhibited potent antioxidant activity in concentration dependent manner in all the above four methods. Butylated hydroxyl anisole (BHA) and ascorbic acid (AA) were used as the reference antioxidant compounds. The most active compounds like dibenz[b,f]azepine and its methoxy group substituent have shown more promising antioxidant and radical scavengers compared to the standards like BHA and ascorbic acid. It is conceivable from the studies that the tricyclic amines,i.e. dibenz[b, f]azepine and some of its derivatives are effective in their antioxidant activity properties.
