Rigorous research and practical experience have allowed building information modeling (BIM) to be successfully adopted in the traditional design process without being severely cumbersome. However, there has been less focus on the connectivity and convergence of multiple types of BIM data or even the connectivity among non-BIM data, such as natural language and image/video data. The connectivity of BIM data means more than the syntactical correlations among them. This paper considers how BIM should be redefined to process BIM data as linked semantic data from the perspective of building information management and employ recent advances in the evaluation, analytics, and prediction (EAP) methodology for linked building ontologies and reasoners.

The application of robotics in construction is hindered by the site environment, which is unstructured and subject to change. At the same time, however, buildings and corresponding sites can be accurately described by Building Information Modeling (BIM). Such a model contains geometric and semantic data about the construction and operation phases of the building and it is already available at the design phase. We propose a method to leverage BIM for simple yet efficient deployment of robotic systems for construction and operation of buildings. With our proposed approach, BIM is used to provide the robot with a priori geometric and semantic information on the environment and to store information on the operation progress. We present two applications that verify the effectiveness of our proposed method. This system represents a step forward towards an easier application of robots in construction.

Building information modeling (BIM) implementation has been mandated in building projects in Singapore, but a wider adoption is still desired. This study aims to investigate the factors influencing BIM diffusion and examine how the factors influence firms with different project roles, firm sizes, and BIM implementation experience. The results of a pilot study, a questionnaire survey with 89 professionals, and five post-survey interviews showed that hindrances related to inadequate multi-party collaboration (whether formal or informal), conservative mindset, limited skills, costly infrastructure and training, and multi-discipline model integration were the most influential, whereas drivers associated with project leadership team’s strategic consensus, multi-disciplinary design coordination, training, and government regulations were top-ranked. Subgroup analyses between pairs of firms with different characteristics revealed that while construction firms and less experienced stakeholders tended to underestimate BIM implementation difficulties, small-medium contractors might underestimate relevant benefits. The findings and managerial recommendations help different types of firms prioritize resources to overcome hindrances, seize opportunities (such as gaining a competitive edge from BIM practical experience), and obtain support from workers executing BIM daily. With major stakeholders’ recognition and implementation, BIM can be successfully diffused in building projects and firms. The Singapore government and other countries can refer to this study when further issuing BIM diffusion policies.

Building information modeling (BIM) is an innovative approach that is widely used to overcome various challenges in the construction industry. Current BIM implementation mainly focuses on information management, but puts very limited effort on knowledge. That is, the current BIM practice is information-centered, but it is not mature enough to generate and capture experiential knowledge. In addition, knowledge management (KM) is limitedly adopted for BIM implementation. Based on this paper's rigorous literature review as well as a survey questionnaire, nine knowledge enablers and 52 knowledge enabler factors for BIM implementation (KEFBIs) are identified. In this paper, we deploy ISM fuzzy MICMAC to identify and classify the key KEFBIs that influence BIM implementation by contractors. The results can guide contractors to avoid difficulties while adopting BIM so that they can plan and allocate their resources optimally.

Though Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been proposed as a lean solution for the construction industry, its implementation would itself benefit from a proactive lean approach. This paper aims to study the implementation of BIM in Facilities Management (FM), and explores the synergistic potential of a lean approach. This was carried out through an integrative review of existing literature. BIM-FM implementation was categorized into three phases, which were analyzed to uncover the challenges and barriers faced in each; and explore the potential of a proactive lean approach to counter them. A number of key findings emerged. The existence of inefficiencies and variability in information management leading to an increase in labor hours was identified as a persistent problem in BIM-FM implementation. This had been derived by systematically mapping the challenges to their resultant effects on business processes based on the seven identified wastes in business. The paper provides both academics and practitioners with a collated list of issues based on a new way of examining BIM in FM implementation. It discusses the need for and synergistic potential of lean concepts to reduce information and time waste.

Abstract. From days to days, management of construction project has been improved during life-cycle project, starting from planning until maintenance. This happen cause of the advantages in implementation technology of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Geographic Information System (GIS) in supporting construction project. Few years ago, enhancement in term of BIM and GIS that provides an additional extension for the purpose of information management is very interesting. With the advantages that been provided by BIM and GIS, information of construction project can be adapted into real situation of the construction site which be helpful during the life-cycle of building construction. BIM and GIS is a different platform which contains their own advantages that support construction project. In order to bring the most effectiveness in management of construction project, integration between BIM and GIS becomes an important task to support the design phase until operational phase which include the facility management and maintenance. Although this integration can support the building information management, the software that used in integration process is still having limitations and differences in fulfilling the needs of users. For that reasons, data consistency needs to be studied in order to develop the best practices of integration application. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the data consistency during the integration process. From the investigation, it showed that there are some data inconsistency occurs in IFC platform after conversion process. Through this paper, the comparison of the geometric and semantic data before and after translation process will be examined.

No contexto atual da Modelagem da Informação da Construção (Building Information Modeling – BIM), os requisitos de informação são essenciais para a gestão da informação. Este artigo, por meio da síntese da série de normas publicadas sobre a ISO 19650, descreve os tipos de requisitos de informação e analisa três exemplos dos seis expostos na Information Management According to BS EN ISO 19650: Guidance Part D. Foi identificado os agentes e as finalidades em cada requisito de informações e relacionado com as definições ISO 19650. A análise ajuda compreender o papel de cada requisito de informação e sua relação com os agentes envolvidos.
