For solving detection problems of multifrequency weak signals in noisy background, a novel weak signal detection method based on variational mode decomposition (VMD) and rescaling frequency-shifted multistable stochastic resonance (RFMSR) with analytical mode decomposition (AMD) is proposed. In this method, different signal frequency bands are processed by rescaling subsampling compression to make each frequency band meet the conditions of stochastic resonance. Before the enhanced signal components are synthesized, they are processed to achieve the enhanced signal by means of AMD, leaving only the enhanced sections of the signal. The processed signal is decomposed into intrinsic mode functions (IMF) by VMD, in order to require the detection of weak multifrequency signals. The experimental analysis of the rolling bearing inner ring fault and gear fault diagnosis demonstrate that the proposed method can not only enhance signal amplitude, reduce false components, and improve the VMD algorithm’s accuracy, but also effectively detect weak multifrequency signals submerged by noise.

A novel methodology for the fault diagnosis of rolling bearing in strong background noise, based on sensitive intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) selection of ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and adaptive stochastic resonance, is proposed. The original vibration signal is decomposed into a group of IMFs and a residual trend item by EEMD. Constructing weighted kurtosis index difference spectrum (WKIDS) to adaptively select sensitive IMFs, this method can overcome the shortcomings of the existing methods such as subjective choice or need to determine a threshold using the correlation coefficient. To further reduce noise and enhance weak characteristics, the adaptive stochastic resonance is employed to amplify each sensitive IMF. Then, the ensemble average is used to eliminate the stochastic noise. The simulation and rolling element bearing experiment with an inner fault are performed to validate the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method not only overcomes the difficulty of choosing sensitive IMFs, but also, combined with adaptive stochastic resonance, can better enhance the weak fault characteristics. Moreover, the proposed method is better than EEMD and adaptive stochastic resonance of each sensitive IMF, demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed method in highly noisy environments.

The vibration signals of rolling element bearings are non-linear and non-stationary and the corresponding fault features are difficult to be extracted. EEMD (Ensemble empirical mode decomposition) is effective to detect bearing faults. In the present investigation, MEEMD (Modified EEMD) is presented to diagnose the outer and inner race faults of bearings. The original vibration signals are analyzed using IMFs (intrinsic mode functions) extracted by MEEMD decomposition and Hilbert spectrum in the proposed method. The numerical and experimental results of the comparison between MEEMD and EEMD indicate that the proposed method is more effective to extract the fault features of outer and inner race of bearings than EEMD.

Doppler radar for monitoring vital signals is an emerging tool, and how to remove the noise during the detection process and reconstruct the accurate respiration and heartbeat signals are hot issues in current research. In this paper, a novel radar vital signal separation and de-noising technique based on improved complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (ICEEMDAN), sample entropy (SampEn), and wavelet threshold is proposed. First, the noisy radar signal was decomposed into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) using ICEEMDAN. Then, each IMF was analyzed using SampEn to find out the first few IMFs containing noise, and these IMFs were de-noised using the wavelet threshold. Finally, in order to extract accurate vital signals, spectrum analysis and Kullback–Leible (KL) divergence calculations were performed on all IMFs, and appropriate IMFs were selected to reconstruct respiration and heartbeat signals. Moreover, as far as we know, there is almost no previous research on radar vital signal de-noising based on the proposed technique. The effectiveness of the algorithm was verified using simulated and measured experiments. The results show that the proposed algorithm could effectively reduce the noise and was superior to the existing de-noising technologies, which is beneficial for extracting more accurate vital signals.

Ultrasound imaging is a first-line diagnostic method for screening the thrombus. During thrombus aging, the proportion of red blood cells (RBCs) in the thrombus decreases and therefore the signal intensity of B-scan can be used to detect the thrombus age. To avoid the effect of system gain on the measurements, this study proposed using the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) of ultrasound image as a strategy to classify newly formed and aged thrombi. Porcine blood samples were used for thein vitroinduction of fresh and aged thrombi (at hematocrits of 40%). Each thrombus was imaged using an ultrasound scanner at different gains (15, 20, and 30 dB). Then, EMD of ultrasound signals was performed to obtain the first and second intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), which were further used to calculate the IMF-based echogenicity ratio (IER). The results showed that the performance of using signal amplitude of B-scan to reflect the thrombus age depends on gain. However, the IER is less affected by the gain in discriminating between fresh and aged thrombi. In the future, ultrasound B-scan combined with the EMD may be used to identify the thrombus age for the establishment of thrombolytic treatment planning.

Gears are the most essential parts in rotating machinery. Crack fault is one of damage modes most frequently occurring in gears. So, this paper deals with the problem of different crack levels classification. The proposed method is mainly based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and Euclidean distance technique (EDT). First, vibration signal acquired by accelerometer is processed by EMD and intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) are obtained. Then, a correlation coefficient based method is proposed to select the sensitive IMFs which contain main gear fault information. And energy of these IMFs is chosen as the fault feature by comparing with kurtosis and skewness. Finally, Euclidean distances between test sample and four classes trained samples are calculated, and on this basis, fault level classification of the test sample can be made. The proposed approach is tested and validated through a gearbox experiment, in which four crack levels and three kinds of loads are utilized. The results show that the proposed method has high accuracy rates in classifying different crack levels and may be adaptive to different conditions.

Measured vibration signals from rolling element bearings with defects are generally nonstationary, and are multiscale in nature owing to contributions from events with different localization in time and frequency. This paper presents a novel approach to characterize the multiscale signature via empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for rolling bearing localized defect evaluation. Vibration signal measured from a rolling element bearing is first adaptively decomposed by the EMD to achieve a series of usable intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) carrying the bearing health information at multiple scales. Then the localized defect-induced IMF is selected from all the IMFs based on a variance regression approach. The multiscale signature, called multiscale slope feature, is finally estimated from the regression line fitted over logarithmic variances of the IMFs excluding the defect IMF. The presented feature reveals the pattern of energy transfer among multiple scales due to localized defects, representing an inherent self-similar signature of the bearing health information that is embedded on multiple analyzed scales. Experimental results verify the performance of the proposed multiscale feature, and further discussions are provided.

A gear transmission system is a complex nonstationary and nonlinear time-varying coupling system. When faults occur on gear system, it is difficult to extract the fault feature. In this paper, a novel fault diagnosis method based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and Deep Briefs Network (DBN) is proposed to treat the vibration signals measured from gearbox. The original data is decomposed into a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) using EEMD, and then main IMFs were chosen for reconstructed signal to suppress abnormal interference from noise. The reconstructed signals were regarded as input of DBN to identify gearbox working states and fault types. To verify the effectiveness of the EEMD-DBN in detecting the faults, a series of gear fault simulate experiments at different states were carried out. Results showed that the proposed method which coupled EEMD and DBN can improve the accuracy of gear fault identification and it is capable of applying to fault diagnosis in practical application.

Rolling bearings are the key components of rotating machinery. However, the incipient fault characteristics of a rolling bearing vibration signal are weak and difficult to extract. To solve this problem, this paper presents a novel rolling bearing vibration signal fault feature extraction and fault pattern recognition method based on variational mode decomposition (VMD), permutation entropy (PE) and support vector machines (SVM). In the proposed method, the bearing vibration signal is decomposed by VMD, and the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) are obtained in different scales. Then, the PE values of each IMF are calculated to uncover the multi-scale intrinsic characteristics of the vibration signal. Finally, PE values of IMFs are fed into SVM to automatically accomplish the bearing condition identifications. The proposed method is evaluated by rolling bearing vibration signals. The results indicate that the proposed method is superior and can diagnose rolling bearing faults accurately.

Abstract The vibration signals for rotating machines are generally polluted by excessive noise and can lose the fault information at the early development phase. In this paper, an improved denoising technique is proposed for early faults diagnosis of rolling bearing based on the complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition (CEEMD) and adaptive thresholding (ATD) method. Firstly, the bearing vibration signals are decomposed into a set of various intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) using CEEMD algorithm. The IMFs grouping and selection are formed based upon the correlation coefficient value. The noise-predominant IMFs are subjected to adaptive thresholding for denoising and then added to the low-frequency IMFs for signal reconstruction. The effectiveness of the proposed method denoised signals are measured based on kurtosis value and the envelope spectrum analysis. The presented method results on experimental datasets illustrate that the proposed approach is an effective denoising technique for early fault detection in the rolling bearing.
