Due to the increased penetration of wind energy into the electrical power systems in recent years, the turbine controls are actively occupied in the research. This paper presents a nonlinear backstepping strategy to control the generators and the grid sides of a Wind Farm System (WFS) based Direct Drive Synchronous Generator (DDSG). The control objectives such as Tracking the Maximum Power (TMP) from the WFS, pitch control, regulation of dc-link voltage, and reactive and active power generation at varying wind velocity are included. To validate the proposed control strategy, simulation results for 6-MW-DDSG based Wind Farm System are carried out by MATLAB-Simulink. Performance comparison and evaluation with Vector Oriented Control (VOC) are provided under a wide range of functioning conditions, three-phase voltage dips, and the probable occurrence of uncertainties. The proposed control strategy offers remarkable characteristics such as excellent dynamic and steady state performance under varying wind speed and robustness to parametric variations in the WFS and under severe faults of grid voltage.

The uncertainty of wind power brings great challenges to large-scale wind power integration. The conventional integration of wind power is difficult to adapt the demand of power grid planning and operation. This paper proposes an instantaneous power control strategy for voltage improvement in power networks using wind turbine improving the dynamical response of power systems performances (voltage and transient stability) after fault. In which the proposed control algorithm based on a new advanced control strategy to control the injected wind power into power system. The efficiency of developed control strategy has been tested using IEEE 9 Bus. Simulation results have showed that the proposed method perform better to preserve optimal performances over wide range of disturbances for both considered scenarios studied short circuit and variable loads.

Variable structure strategies have shown an efficient performance in controlling nonlinear electrical power systems by reason of its strength to handle perfectly the unmodeled system dynamics. In this study, with the exponent reaching law, a robust enhancement method of sliding mode controller (SMC) based on a nonlinear fractional order sliding surface that consists of both fractional differentiation and integration is proposed and applied to control a high-power multiphase permanent magnet synchronous generator based direct-driven Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS), in order to improve the energy efficiency and reduce the produced chattering phenomenon of conventional SMC . Moreover, a new smooth and derivable nonlinear switching control function is applied to replace the traditional non-derivable nonlinear control law, to improve dynamic performance, static performance, and robustness of the system. The proposed strategy stability is investigated under Lyapunov theory. A comparative simulation of the new proposed approach with the conventional SMC and PI controller display the excellent performance, stability and high robustness of FOSMC, by improving the system efficiency up to 98.66%, compared to conventional SMC with 91,14%, while the PI control achieves 86, 2%.

With the increasing penetration of the hybrid AC/DC microgrid in power systems, an inertia decrease of the microgrid is caused. Many scholars have put forward the concept of a virtual synchronous generator, which enables the converters of the microgrid to possess the characteristics of a synchronous generator, thus providing inertia support for the microgrid. Nevertheless, the problems of active power oscillation and unbalance would be serious when multiple virtual synchronous generators (VSGs) operate in the microgrid. To conquer these problems, a VSG-based autonomous power-frequency control strategy is proposed, which not only independently allocates the power grid capacity according to the load capacity, but also effectively suppresses the active power oscillation. In addition, by establishing a dynamic small-signal model of the microgrid, the dynamic stability of the proposed control strategy in the microgrid is verified, and further reveals the leading role of the VSG and filter in the dynamic stability of microgrids. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy are validated by the simulation results.

Mathematical models and algorithms for maximizing power extraction have become an essential topic in renewable energies in the last years, especially in wind energy conversion systems. This study proposes maximum power point tracking using gain scheduling approximations for an emulated wind system in a direct-drive connection. Power extraction is obtained by controlling the duty cycle of a Multilevel Boost Converter, which directly varies the rotational speed of a permanent magnet synchronous generator directly coupled to a three-phase induction motor that emulates the wind turbine. The system’s complexity is linked to the inherent non-linearities associated with the diverse electrical, mechanical, and power electronic elements. In order to present a synthesized model without losing the system dynamic richness, several physical tests were made to obtain parameters for building several mathematical approaches, resulting in non-linear dynamic equations for the controller gains, which are dependant on wind speed. Thirty real operational wind speeds considering typical variations were used in several tests to demonstrate the mathematical models’ performance. Results among these gain scheduling approaches and a typical controller constant gains mathematical model were compared based on standard deviations, absolute error, and the time for reaching the optimum generator angular speed related to every wind speed.

The direct-drive permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) system with full power converter can achieve wind maximum power point tracking (MPPT) in wide range variation of wind-speed. In this paper an operating characteristic of PMSG is investigated, a MPPT strategy based on hill climbing method for PMSG are present. Simulation and experimental results show that the controllers can extract maximum wind power in good dynamic performance.
