The aim of this work is to estimate jointly the elevation and azimuth angles along with the amplitudes of multiple signals impinging on 1-L- and 2-L-shape arrays. An efficient mechanism based on hybrid Bioinspired techniques is proposed for this purpose. The global search optimizers such as Differential Evolution (DE) and Particle Swarm optimization (PSO) are hybridized with a local search optimizer called pattern search (PS). Approximation theory in Mean Square Error sense is exploited to develop a fitness function of the problem. The unknown parameters of multiple signals transmitted by far-field sources are estimated with the strength of hybrid DE-PS and PSO-PS. The effectiveness of the proposed techniques is tested in terms of estimation accuracy, proximity effect, convergence, and computational complexity.

Parameter estimation is an important problem in nonlinear system modeling and control. Through constructing an appropriate fitness function, parameter estimation of system could be converted to a multidimensional parameter optimization problem. As a novel swarm intelligence algorithm, chicken swarm optimization (CSO) has attracted much attention owing to its good global convergence and robustness. In this paper, a method based on improved boundary chicken swarm optimization (IBCSO) is proposed for parameter estimation of nonlinear systems, demonstrated and tested by Lorenz system and a coupling motor system. Furthermore, we have analyzed the influence of time series on the estimation accuracy. Computer simulation results show it is feasible and with desirable performance for parameter estimation of nonlinear systems.

Hybrid evolutionary computational technique is developed to jointly estimate the amplitude, frequency, range, and 2D direction of arrival (elevation and azimuth angles) of near-field sources impinging on centrosymmetric cross array. Specifically, genetic algorithm is used as a global optimizer, whereas pattern search and interior point algorithms are employed as rapid local search optimizers. For this, a new multiobjective fitness function is constructed, which is the combination of mean square error and correlation between the normalized desired and estimated vectors. The performance of the proposed hybrid scheme is compared not only with the individual responses of genetic algorithm, interior point algorithm, and pattern search, but also with the existing traditional techniques. The proposed schemes produced fairly good results in terms of estimation accuracy, convergence rate, and robustness against noise. A large number of Monte-Carlo simulations are carried out to test out the validity and reliability of each scheme.

The Muskingum method is one of the widely used methods for lumped flood routing in natural rivers. Calibration of its parameters remains an active challenge for the researchers. The task has been mostly addressed by using crisp numbers, but fuzzy seems a reasonable alternative to account for parameter uncertainty. In this work, a fuzzy Muskingum model is proposed where the assessment of the outflow as a fuzzy quantity is based on the crisp linear Muskingum method but with fuzzy parameters as inputs. This calculation can be achieved based on the extension principle of the fuzzy sets and logic. The critical point is the calibration of the proposed fuzzy extension of the Muskingum method. Due to complexity of the model, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is used to enable the use of a simulation process for each possible solution that composes the swarm. A weighted sum of several performance criteria is used as the fitness function of the PSO. The function accounts for the inclusive constraints (the property that the data must be included within the produced fuzzy band) and for the magnitude of the fuzzy band, since large uncertainty may render the model non-functional. Four case studies from the references are used to benchmark the proposed method, including smooth, double, and non-smooth data and a complex, real case study that shows the advantages of the approach. The use of fuzzy parameters is closer to the uncertain nature of the problem. The new methodology increases the reliability of the prediction. Furthermore, the produced fuzzy band can include, to a significant degree, the observed data and the output of the existent crisp methodologies even if they include more complex assumptions.

Aiming at improving localization accuracy in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) based on Least Square Support Vector Regression (LSSVR), making LSSVR localization method more practicable, the mechanism of effects of the kernel function for target localization based on LSSVR is discussed based on the mathematical solution process of LSSVR localization method. A novel method of modeling parameters optimization for LSSVR model using particle swarm optimization is proposed. Construction method of fitness function for modeling parameters optimization is researched. In addition, the characteristics of particle swarm parameters optimization are analyzed. The computational complexity of parameters optimization is taken into consideration comprehensively. Experiments of target localization based on CC2430 show that localization accuracy using LSSVR method with modeling parameters optimization increased by 23%~36% in compare with the maximum likelihood method(MLE) and the localization error is close to the minimum with different LSSVR modeling parameters. Experimental results show that adapting a reasonable fitness function for modeling parameters optimization using particle swarm optimization could enhance the anti-noise ability significantly and improve the LSSVR localization performance.

This paper mainly proposes an efficient modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) method, to identify a slider-crank mechanism driven by a field-oriented PM synchronous motor. The parameters of many industrial machines are difficult to obtain if these machines cannot be taken apart. In system identification, we adopt the MPSO method to find parameters of the slider-crank mechanism. This new algorithm is added with “distance” term in the traditional PSO’s fitness function to avoid converging to a local optimum. Finally, the comparisons of numerical simulations and experimental results prove that the MPSO identification method for the slider-crank mechanism is feasible.

An optimization design system for fir-tree root of turbine blade has been developed in this paper. In the system, a parametric model of the blade and rim was established based on the parametric design language APDL, and nonlinear contact method was used for analysis by ANSYS, meanwhile some optimization algorithms, such as Pattern Search Algorithm, Genetic Algorithm, Simulated Annealing Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimization, were adopted to control the optimizing process. Five cases of manufacturing variation in contact surfaces between root and rim were taken into account, and the design objective was to minimize the maximum equivalent stress of root-rim by optimizing eight critical geometrical dimensions of the root and rim. As a result, the maximum equivalent stress of root-rim decreases markedly after the optimization in all cases. In consideration of both precision and computing time, particle swarm optimization is assessed as the best algorithm to solve structure optimization problem in this work. Corresponding to five different cases of manufacturing variation, the maximum equivalent stress of root and rim reduces by 7%, 8%; 27%, 24%; 27%, 22%; 25%, 19%; 10%, 14% using the Particle Swarm Optimization.

Abstract Class imbalance problems have attracted the research community but a few works have focused on feature selection with imbalanced datasets. To handle class imbalance problems, we developed a novel fitness function for feature selection using the chaotic salp swarm optimization algorithm, an efficient meta-heuristic optimization algorithm that has been successfully used in a wide range of optimization problems. This paper proposes an Adaboost algorithm with chaotic salp swarm optimization. The most discriminating features are selected using salp swarm optimization and Adaboost classifiers are thereafter trained on the features selected. Experiments show the ability of the proposed technique to find the optimal features with performance maximization of Adaboost.

A support vector machine (SVM) optimized by particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based damage identification method is proposed in this paper. The classification accuracy of the damage localization and the detection accuracy of severity are used as the fitness function, respectively. The best and can be obtained through velocity and position updating of PSO. A simply supported beam bridge with five girders is provided as numerical example, damage cases with single and multiple suspicious damage elements are established to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. Numerical results indicate that the SVM optimized by PSO method can effectively identify the damage locations and severity.

Abstract In order to solve the problem of hot spot caused by uneven energy consumption of nodes in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and reduce the network energy consumption, a novel cluster routing algorithm called CRPL for ring based wireless sensor networks using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Lion Swarm Optimization (LSO) is proposed in this paper. In CRPL, the optimal cluster head (CH) of each ring are selected by using LSO whose fitness function is composed of energy, number of neighbor nodes, number of cluster heads and distance. Moreover, PSO with a multi-objective fitness function considering distance, energy and cluster size is used to find the next hop relay node in the process of data transmission, and the optimal routing paths are obtained, so as to alleviate the hot spot problem as well as decrease the energy consumption in the routing process. The simulation results show that, compared with some existing optimization algorithms, CRPL has better effects in balancing the energy consumption of the network and prolonging the life cycle of the network.

Mobile adhoc network (MANET) comprises a network of mobile nodes, which communicates with one another through wireless connections. Reliability, energy efficiency, congestion control and interferences are the problems faced with the traditional routing protocols in MANET. Routing defines the process of identifying the optimal paths between two nodes in the network. For resolving these issues, several multipath routing techniques have been presented. This paper assesses the performance of the two bio-inspired multipath routing techniques namely Energy-Aware Multipath Routing Scheme based on particle swarm optimization (EMPSO) and PSO with fitness function (PSO-FF) algorithms. These two algorithms are compared and the results are investigated under several performance measures. The simulation results stated that the PSO-FF algorithm has shown better results over the EMPSO algorithm under several measures.
