The condensation of 3-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and the diamines 1,2-diphenylendiamine, 1,2-diamine-2-methylpropane and 1,3-propanediamine yielded the dianionic tetradentate Schiff base ligands N,N′-bis(2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzylidene)-1,2-diphenylendiimine (H2L1), N,N′-bis(2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzylidene)-1,2-diamino-2-methylpropane (H2L2) and N,N′-bis(2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzylidene)-1,3-diaminopropane (H2L3) respectively. The organic compounds H2L1 and H2L2 have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies and mass spectrometry electrospray (ES). The crystal structure of H2L2 in solid state, solved by X-ray crystallography, is highly conditioned in the solid state by two N-H•••N intramolecular interactions. The synthesis of three new manganese(III) complexes 1–3, incorporating these ligands, H2L1–H2L3, and dicyanamide (DCA), is reported. The complexes 1–3 have been physicochemically characterized by elemental analysis, IR and paramagnetic 1H NMR spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, magnetic moment at room temperature and conductivity measurements. Complex 1 has been crystallographically characterized. The X-ray structure shows the self-assembly of the Mn(III)-Schiff base-DCA complex through µ-aquo bridges between neighbouring axial water molecules and also by π-π stacking interactions, establishing a dimeric structure. The manganese complexes were also tested as peroxidase mimics for the H2O2-mediated reaction with the water-soluble trap ABTS, showing complexes 1-2 relevant peroxidase activity in contrast with 3. The rhombicity around the metal ion can explain this catalytic behaviour.

( E)-4-[2-(Pyridin-4-yl)vinyl]benzaldehyde, containing both a 4-vinylpyridine and an aldehyde functionality, is utilized to develop new, highly conjugated chalcone compounds and a bis-Schiff base azine compound. The chalcone-containing compounds are further explored for their protonation, methylation and silver(I) coordination chemistry using the pyridine moiety. In parallel, a cyano-containing analogue, ( E)-4-[2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl]benzonitrile is also synthesized and studied for its silver(I) coordination chemistry. These new compounds are fully characterized by mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques. The methylated product of ( E)-1-(9-anthryl)-3-{4-[2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl]phenyl}prop-2-en-1-one and a silver complex of ( E)-4-[2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl]benzonitrile are structurally determined by X-ray crystallography.

A series of copper(ii) complexes of the ligand 2,6-bis(pyridin-3-ylethynyl)pyridine have been synthesised and characterised by 1H and DOSY NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopies, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. In solution these systems display almost identical spectroscopic properties, however the solid state structures are shown to vary widely, depending upon the choice of anion. The tetrafluoroborate salt was revealed to be a discrete Cu2L4 cage-like helicate. The tosylate salt, whilst of the same Cu2L4 stoichiometry, was shown to be a coordination polymer. Finally the nitrate salt structure was observed to be a discrete Cu2L2 metallocycle.

Background: Ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular accident, and venous thromboembolism have the presence of a thrombotic event in common and represent the most common causes of death within the population. Objective: Since Schiff base copper(II) complexes are able to interact with polyphosphates (PolyP), a procoagulant and potentially prothrombotic platelet agent, we investigated the antiplatelet aggregating properties of two novel tridentate Schiff base ligands and their corresponding copper( II) complexes. Methods: The Schiff base ligands (L1) and (L2), as well as their corresponding copper(II) complexes (C1) and (C2), were synthesized and characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry, and UV-Visible, IR and far IR spectroscopy. In addition, EPR studies were carried out for (C1) and (C2), while (L1) and (L2) were further analyzed by 1H and 13C NMR. Tests for antiplatelet aggregation activities of all of the four compounds were conducted. Results: X-ray diffraction studies show that (L1) and (L2) exist in the enol-imine tautomeric form with a strong intramolecular hydrogen bond. NMR studies show that both ligands are found as enol-imine tautomers in CDCl3 solution. In the solid state, the geometry around the copper(II) ion in both (C1) and (C2) is square planar. EPR spectra suggest that the geometry of the complexes is similar to that observed in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. Compound (C2) exhibited the strongest antiplatelet aggregation activity. Conclusion: Schiff base copper(II) complexes, which are attracting increasing interest, could represent a new approach to treat thrombosis by blocking the activity of PolyP with a potential anticoagulant activity and, most importantly, demonstrating no adverse bleeding events.

Condensation of salicylaldehyde with enantiopure (R)-(1-aryl-ethyl)amines yields the enantiopure Schiff bases (R)-N-(1-aryl-ethyl)salicylaldimine (HSB*; aryl = phenyl, 2-methoxyphenyl, 3- methoxyphenyl, 4-methoxyphenyl (4), 4-bromophenyl (5), 2-naphthyl). These Schiff bases readily react with dinuclear (acetato)(η4-cycloocta-1,5-diene)rhodium(I), [Rh(μ-O2CMe)(η4-cod)]2, to afford the mononuclear complexes, cyclooctadiene-((R)-N-(1-aryl-ethyl)salicylaldiminato-κ2N,O)- rhodium(I), [Rh(SB∗)(η4-cod)] (SB* = deprotonated chiral Schiff base = salicylaldiminate; aryl = phenyl (7), 2-methoxyphenyl, 4-methoxyphenyl, 4-bromophenyl, 2-naphthyl). The complexes have been characterized by IR, UV/vis, 1H/13C NMR and mass spectrometry, optical rotation as well as by single-crystal X-ray structure determination for 4, 5 and 7. The structure of 5 shows C-Br· · ·π contacts. Compound 7 is only the second example of a Rh(η4-cod) complex with a six-membered Rh-N,O-chelate ring

The reaction of dimethylcadmium with alcohols R-OH in equimolar ratio leads to the formation of tetrameric methylcadmium alkoxides with molecular formula [(MeCd)4 (OR)4] [R = Me (1), Et (2) and iPr (3)]. These compounds have been characterised by 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy, by mass spectrometry, elemental analyses and by X-ray crystallography (for 2 and 3). The solid state structures show distorted cubane-type aggregates with Cd4O4 cores. The structural aspects and the spectroscopic characterisations of these compounds are discussed.
