A Gaussian tapered slot antenna based on post-wall structured slotline for improvement of cross-polarization for ultra-wideband applications is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The antenna is composed of two pairs of Gaussian tapered slotline which have the same structure printed on both sides of the PCB, two metallic via arrays positioned along the slot edges, and two terminal resistors. The metallic via arrays are used to reduce the characteristic impedance of the conventional slotline which form a post-wall slotline and thus can be fed by a coaxial connector directly. More importantly, the balanced symmetrical post-wall structure ensures low cross-polarization levels of the antenna. The Gaussian tapered edges and the terminal resistors diminish reflected signal and thus can enlarge the bandwidth significantly. Good agreements between the simulated and the measured results have been observed. Results show that the proposed antenna exhibits a −10 dB impedance bandwidth from 1.5 GHz to 20 GHz, a maximum realized gain of 12 dBi, and the broadside cross-polarization level is averaged about −32 dB in the lower frequency band and −25 dB in the higher frequency band with a maximum value of −22 dB in the whole working frequency band.

A post-wall-structured tapered slot antenna (PWTSA) loaded with an embedded metamaterial-based lens (metalens) is proposed and investigated for short-pulse applications. The proposed embedded metalens consists of not only a metallic delay lens, but also an airy acceleration region surrounding the lens, which is different from the conventional metalenses used in various tapered slot antennas and can exhibit a small equivalent permittivity. Therefore, the embedded metalens has a large usable range of permittivity and does not increase the size of the original prototype PWTSA. The post-wall structure and metalens of the proposed antenna can help it achieve a comprehensive and balanced performance, including a high fidelity, low cross-polarization, stable main-lobe direction and gain enhancement. The simulated and measured results show that without any increase in antenna size, the proposed antenna enhances the realized gain by 6.4 dB over the frequency range from 9 to 26 GHz and achieves a stable radiation with the offset of the main-lobe direction being confined to 2° up to 24.9 GHz. Furthermore, the cross-polarization levels are less than −20 dB and the fidelity is kept high for the short-pulse radiation with the frequency spectrum up to 30 GHz.

The miniaturized high-gain antenna is required in portable, ultra-wideband radar systems. However, the miniaturization, ultra-wideband and high gain often restrict each other in the antenna design. In this paper, a dual-polarized, double-slot, antipodal tapered slot antenna with a double-layer, dual-loop structure and novel slot edges is presented. The proposed magnetic dual-loop structure has the capacity to reduce the low cut-off frequency of the double-slot tapered slot antenna by weakening the resonance and coupling. In addition, the high gain, low sidelobe level (SLL), and low cross-polarization level are achieved in the boresight direction. A novel gradient slot profile is designed to improve the low-frequency directivity of the tapered slot antenna without affecting the matching. To feed the antenna elements, a kind of wideband, balun-divider structure is designed. The dual-polarized antenna is combined by two orthogonal elements in a cross configuration without galvanic contact or influence to performance. The measured results show that the impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna is 0.6~4 GHz, and the maximum gain is 11 dBi. The isolation between the two antenna ports is better than 32 dB, and the cross-polarization discrimination (XPD) is better than 20 dB.

This article presents a 2×1 CPW ultra wideband rectangular slot antenna array (UWB-RSAA) with a modified circular slot shape to support a high data rate for wireless communications applications. The proposed antenna array dimensions are 0.7λ×0.8λo×0.064λo at the resonant frequency 1.8 GHz. It is fabricated on Rogers RO4003 substrate and fed by using a coplanar waveguide (CPW). A graphene layer is added on one side of the substrate to realize frequency reconfigurability and improve the array gain. The proposed array acquires -10 dB impedance bandwidth of the RSAA that extends from 1.7 GHz to 2.6 GHz, from 3.2 to 3.8 GHz, and from 5.2 GHz to 7 GHz. The proposed array achieved a realized peak gain of 7.5 dBi at 6.5 GHz at 0 Volt bias with an average gain of 4.5 dBi over the operating band. When the graphene bias is increased to 20 Volt, the antenna bandwidth extends from 1 GHz to 4 GHz and from 5 to 7 GHz with a peak gain of 14 dBi at 3.5 GHz and an average gain of 7.5 dBi. The linearly polarized operation of the proposed array over the operating bands makes it suitable for short-range wireless communications .

The high cross-polarization of the microstrip integrated balun-fed printed dipole antenna cannot meet the demands of many engineering applications. This kind of antennas has high cross-polarization levels (about −20 dB). And we find that the high cross-polarization radiation is mainly produced by the microstrip integrated balun rather than the dipole itself. The very limited method to lower the cross-polarization level of this kind of antennas is to reduce the substrate thickness. In this paper, to improve the low cross-polarized performance, firstly, an equivalent model is presented to analyze the cross-polarization radiation. Secondly, a novel structure with low cross-polarization is proposed. The microstrip integrated balun is enclosed by a center slotted cavity. The E-field of the microstrip integrated balun is transformed parallel to the dipole arms by the slot, so the radiation of the cross-polarized component is suppressed. Measured results show that this structure can achieve a bandwidth wider than 40% while reducing the cross-polarization level to less than −35 dB within the frequency band.

This paper proposes novel low-profile differential-fed planar antennas with embedded sharp frequency selectively. The antennas are compact and easy to integrate with differential devices without matching baluns. The antenna design is formulated as a topology optimization problem, where requirements on impedance bandwidth, directivity, and filtering are used as the design objectives. The optimized antennas operate over the frequency band 6.0–8.5 GHz. The antennas have reflection coefficients below −15 dB, cross-polarization levels below −42 dB, a maximum gain of 6.0 ± 0.5 dB, and a uniform directivity over more than 130° beamwidth angle in the frequency band of interest. In addition, the antennas exhibit sharp roll-off between the operational band and frequencies around the 5.8 GHz WiFi band and the 10 GHz X-band. One antenna has been fabricated with a good match between simulation and measurement results.

The shape of the tuning stub of the wide slot printed antenna is an important factor which affects the antenna’s performances. In this paper, a new design and optimization method of wideband printed slot antenna using a shape blending algorithm is presented. The proposed antenna consists of a wide rectangular slot and a tuning stub, whose profile is formed by the shape blending outcome from a pie and a diamond shape. The method is used to design an ultra-wideband antenna. The impact on the impedance bandwidth through the antenna geometry change with the different shape blending results has been investigated and analyzed. To verify the proposed design, the antenna prototype was designed, fabricated, and measured. The measured results are compared with the simulation and show good agreement.

In this paper, triple-band stacked microstrip patch antennas (MPAs) are presented with wide impedance bandwidth and suppressed cross-polarization level. Triangular and circular shaped slots are embedded in the patch of antenna. Slot-loaded microstrip patches are fed with meandered microstrip line supported by a semi-ground plane structure. Triangular shaped slot-loaded MPA shows triple resonance at frequencies 2.2, 4.45, and 5.3 GHz having bandwidth of 45.9, 19.23, and 15.67%, respectively. Circular shaped slot-loaded MPA also shows triple resonance at frequencies 2.2, 4.42, and 5.38 GHz having bandwidth of 50.24, 33.21, and 13.43%, respectively. Using circular slot in place of triangular; bandwidth of the first and the second band is improved by 4.34 and 13.98%, respectively. Both the proposed antennas show an omnidirectional radiation pattern at all three resonance frequencies in the xz-plane with almost 0 dBi gain. Both the proposed antennas are fabricated on a FR-4 epoxy substrate and show a minimum level of cross-polarization radiations.

In this paper, the design, simulation, and fabrication of a novel printed rectangular slot antenna with a band-notched function suitable for 2.4 GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) and ultra-wideband (UWB) applications is presented and investigated. Two pairs of slits are introduced into the ground plane to realize band-notched function, by tuning the position, length, and width of which a suitable rejected frequency band can be obtained. To improve the impedance matching, a rectangular cut is also made in the ground plane so that the antenna can cover 2–12 GHz frequency range. According to the measured results, the proposed antenna has a large bandwidth totally satisfying the requirement of 2.4 GHz WLAN and UWB systems, while providing the required band-notch function from 5.1 to 5.9 GHz. The study of transfer function and time-domain characteristics also indicates the band-notched function of the antenna. The radiation patterns display nearly omni-directional performance and the antenna gain is stable except in the rejected frequency band (5.1–5.9 GHz). Moreover, group delays are within 1.5 ns except for the notch band. These features make it a promising candidate for UWB wireless applications. Details of this antenna are described, and the experimental results of the constructed prototype are given.

A novel design of an ultra-wideband (UWB) slot antenna is presented. This antenna operates as a transmitter and receiver antenna. Effects of the antenna dimensional parameters are studied through experimental and simulation results. Design procedures are developed and verified for different frequency bands. The experimental and simulation results exhibit good impedance bandwidth, radiation pattern, and relatively constant gain over the entire band of frequency. Antenna gain and directivity at boresight and in their maximum states are close to each other and indicate high radiation efficiency. To use the antenna as a linearly polarized antenna, the radiation pattern in E-plane is better thanthat inH-plane.
