This paper presents an experimental program performed to study the effect of fluid-structure interaction on the modal dynamic response of water-surrounded slender bridge pier with pile foundation. A reduced scale slender bridge pier specimen is built and tested through forced vibration method. The vibration periods of the first four lateral modes, including the first two modes along x-axis and the first two modes along y-axis, are measured based on the specimen submerged by 16 levels of water and designated with 4 levels of tip mass. Three-dimensional (3D) finite-element models are established for the tested water-pier system and analyzed under various combined cases of water level and tip mass. Percentage increases of vibration periods with respect to dry vibration periods (i.e., vibration periods of the specimen without water) are determined as a function of water level and tip mass to evaluate the effect of fluid-structure interaction. The numerical results are successfully validated against the recorded test data. Based on the validated models, the modal hydrodynamic pressures are calculated to characterize the 3D distribution of hydrodynamic loads on the pier systems. The research provides a better illumination into the effect of fluid-structure interaction on the modal dynamic response of deepwater bridges.

This article presents an experiment program conducted to study the modal dynamic response of hollow bridge pier with pile foundation submerged in water. The forced vibration method was applied on a specimen designated with four levels of tip mass; and the dynamic characteristics of the first four lateral vibration modes of the specimen, including the first two modes along the x-axis and the first two modes along the y-axis, were tested for three different cases where the specimen contacts with only outer water, only inner water, and both outer and inner water, respectively. Finite element models were established using potential-based fluid elements in accordance with the three different cases. The effects of fluid-structure interaction on the dynamic characteristics of the first four lateral modes of the specimen were then investigated through numerical simulations, and the finite element models were verified by validating numerical results against the experimental data. Based on the verified models, hydrodynamic added mass (HAM) and modal hydrodynamic added mass (MHAM) along the x-axis and y-axis of the specimen, induced by fluid-structure interaction, were studied with respect to the three cases. According to the distribution of modal acceleration and hydrodynamic pressure along the pier body, hydrodynamic added mass (HAM) distribution along the pier body was analyzed, and a simplified analytical model which equals the original fluid-structure numerical model was proposed to determine the dynamic characteristics of hollow bridge piers submerged in water. The research provides a better understanding of the effect of fluid-structure interaction on the modal dynamic response of deep-water bridges with hollow piers.

Purpose Two disastrous Tsunamis, one on the west coast of Sumatra Island, Indonesia, in 2004 and another in North East Japan in 2011, had seriously destroyed a large number of bridges. Thus, experimental tests in a wave flume and a fluid structure interaction (FSI) analysis were constructed to gain insight into tsunami bore force on coastal bridges. Design/methodology/approach Various wave heights and shallow water were used in the experiments and computational process. A 1:40 scaled concrete bridge model was placed in mild beach profile similar to a 24 × 1.5 × 2 m wave flume for the experimental investigation. An Arbitrary Lagrange Euler formulation for the propagation of tsunami solitary and bore waves by an FSI package of LS-DYNA on high-performance computing system was used to evaluate the experimental results. Findings The excellent agreement between experiments and computational simulation is shown in results. The results showed that the fully coupled FSI models could capture the tsunami wave force accurately for all ranges of wave heights and shallow depths. The effects of the overturning moment, horizontal, uplift and impact forces on a pier and deck of the bridge were evaluated in this research. Originality/value Photos and videos captured during the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 and the 2011 Japan tsunami showed solitary tsunami waves breaking offshore, along with an extremely turbulent tsunami-induced bore propagating toward shore with significantly higher velocity. Consequently, the outcomes of this current experimental and numerical study are highly relevant to the evaluation of tsunami bore forces on the coastal, over sea or river bridges. These experiments assessed tsunami wave forces on deck pier showing the complete response of the coastal bridge over water.

As a common phenomenon in liquid motions, sloshing usually happens in a partially filled liquid tank of moving vehicle or structure. The objectives of this paper are to study sloshing behavior in rigid tank and deformable tank, and to develop a better performance baffle design in the tank under seismic excitations. The tank is surged with a sinusoidal oscillation about horizontal x-direction. The hydro-elasticity effect of sloshing pressure on the tank wall was taken into consideration due to the fluid-structure interaction between impact pressures and tank structures. ABAQUS finite element program using Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) technique was employed to simulate fluid sloshing. The sloshing phenomenon was studied in rigid tank and deformable tank models with three different water levels, and the effect of wall thickness of the deformable tank on sloshing behavior was discussed. One way to minimize the effect of sloshing in a tank, baffles are used and installed in the middle of the tank, and then various heights and material types of baffle were evaluated. The simulation results show that higher water level case creates greater pressure impact on the tank wall than lower water level case, and the elasticity of the tank structure would reduce the impact pressure of the wall. For the simulation tank model with size of 1m (H) × 1m (W) × 0.2m (D), better performance baffle was found to be the one with the height of 0.35m and was made of acrylic material. Moreover, the conclusion of this study can be extrapolated to other dimensions of the model based on similarity theory. This paper also can serve as an aid in further studying sloshing phenomenon. The findings of this study can be applied to restrain or minimize sloshing motions inside a tank.
