Envelope spectrum analysis is a simple, effective, and classic method for bearing fault identification. However, in the wayside acoustic health monitoring system, owing to the high relative moving speed between the railway vehicle and the wayside mounted microphone, the recorded signal is embedded with Doppler effect, which brings in shift and expansion of the bearing fault characteristic frequency (FCF). What is more, the background noise is relatively heavy, which makes it difficult to identify the FCF. To solve the two problems, this study introduces solutions for the wayside acoustic fault diagnosis of train bearing based on Doppler effect reduction using the improved time-domain interpolation resampling (TIR) method and diagnosis-relevant information enhancement using Weighted-Correlation-Coefficient-Guided Stochastic Resonance (WCCSR) method. First, the traditional TIR method is improved by incorporating the original method with kinematic parameter estimation based on time-frequency analysis and curve fitting. Based on the estimated parameters, the Doppler effect is removed using the TIR easily. Second, WCCSR is employed to enhance the diagnosis-relevant period signal component in the obtained Doppler-free signal. Finally, paved with the above two procedures, the local fault is identified using envelope spectrum analysis. Simulated and experimental cases have verified the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Stochastic resonance is like a nonlinear filter to detect the weak bearing fault-induced impulses that submerged in strong noises. Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is often used as the index to evaluate the SR output, but the fault characteristic frequency (FCF) must be known in order to calculate SNR. A novel bearing fault diagnosis method called synthetic quantitative index-based adaptive underdamped stochastic resonance (SQI-AUSR) is proposed. The synthetic quantitative index (SQI) is composed of power spectrum kurtosis, kurtosis, margin index, and correlation coefficient. The SQI is independent of FCF, which avoids the limitation that the calculation of SNR must know the FCF. Numeric simulations and two case studies of bearing faults are carried out. The results show that (1) the SQI is more effective than other proposed indexes such as correlation coefficient and weight power spectrum kurtosis and (2) the proposed SQI-AUSR is effective for bearing fault diagnosis and is better than SNR-AOSR.

Wayside acoustic defective bearing detector (ADBD) system is a potential technique in ensuring the safety of traveling vehicles. However, Doppler distortion and multiple moving sources aliasing in the acquired acoustic signals decrease the accuracy of defective bearing fault diagnosis. Currently, the method of constructing time-frequency (TF) masks for source separation was limited by an empirical threshold setting. To overcome this limitation, this study proposed a dynamic Doppler multisource separation model and constructed a time domain-separating matrix (TDSM) to realize multiple moving sources separation in the time domain. The TDSM was designed with two steps of (1) constructing separating curves and time domain remapping matrix (TDRM) and (2) remapping each element of separating curves to its corresponding time according to the TDRM. Both TDSM and TDRM were driven by geometrical and motion parameters, which would be estimated by Doppler feature matching pursuit (DFMP) algorithm. After gaining the source components from the observed signals, correlation operation was carried out to estimate source signals. Moreover, fault diagnosis could be carried out by envelope spectrum analysis. Compared with the method of constructing TF masks, the proposed strategy could avoid setting thresholds empirically. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed technique was validated by simulation and experimental cases. Results indicated the potential of this method for improving the performance of the ADBD system.

Acceleration sensors are frequently applied to collect vibration signals for bearing fault diagnosis. To fully use these vibration signals of multi-sensors, this paper proposes a new approach to fuse multi-sensor information for bearing fault diagnosis by using ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), correlation coefficient analysis, and support vector machine (SVM). First, EEMD is applied to decompose the vibration signal into a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), and a correlation coefficient ratio factor (CCRF) is defined to select sensitive IMFs to reconstruct new vibration signals for further feature fusion analysis. Second, an original feature space is constructed from the reconstructed signal. Afterwards, weights are assigned by correlation coefficients among the vibration signals of the considered multi-sensors, and the so-called fused features are extracted by the obtained weights and original feature space. Finally, a trained SVM is employed as the classifier for bearing fault diagnosis. The diagnosis results of the original vibration signals, the first IMF, the proposed reconstruction signal, and the proposed method are 73.33%, 74.17%, 95.83% and 100%, respectively. Therefore, the experiments show that the proposed method has the highest diagnostic accuracy, and it can be regarded as a new way to improve diagnosis results for bearings.

The condition monitoring of rotating machinery is always a focus of intelligent fault diagnosis. In view of the traditional methods’ excessive dependence on prior knowledge to manually extract features, their limited capacity to learn complex nonlinear relations in fault signals and the mixing of the collected signals with environmental noise in the course of the work of rotating machines, this article proposes a novel approach for detecting the bearing fault, which is based on deep learning. To effectively detect, locate, and identify faults in rolling bearings, a stacked noise reduction autoencoder is utilized for abstracting characteristic from the original vibration of signals, and then, the characteristic is provided as input for backpropagation (BP) network classifier. The results output by this classifier represent different fault categories. Experimental results obtained on rolling bearing datasets show that this method can be used to effectively diagnose bearing faults based on original time-domain signals.
