This paper presents a novel method for fault diagnosis based on an improved adaptive resonance theory (ART) neural network and ensemble technique. The method consists of three stages. Firstly, the improved ART neural network is comprised of the soft competition technique based on fuzzy competitive learning (FCL) and ART based on Yu’s norm, the neural nodes in the competition layer are trained according to the degree of membership between the mode node and the input, and then fault samples are classified in turn. Secondly, with the distance evaluation technique, the optimal features are obtained from the statistical characteristics of original signals and wavelet coefficients. Finally, the optimal features are input into the neural network ensemble (NNE) based on voting method to identify the different fault categories. The proposed method is applied to the fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings, and testing results show that the neural network ensemble can reliably classify different fault categories and the degree of faults, which has a better classification performance compared with the single neural network.

Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) model is a special neural network based on unsupervised learning which simulates the cognitive process of human. However, ART1 can be only used for binary input, and ART2 can be used for binary and analog vectors which have complex structures and complicated calculations. In order to improve the real-time performance of the network, a minimal structural ART is proposed which combines the merits of the two models by subsuming the bottom-up and top-down weight. The vector similarity test is used instead of vigilance test. Therefore, this algorithm has a simple structure like ART1 and good performance as ART2 which can be used for both binary and analog vector classification, and it has a high efficiency. Finally, a gas turbine fault diagnosis experiment exhibits the validity of the new network.

The Ultrasonic Pulse-Echo technique has been successfully used in a non-destructive testing of materials. To perform Ultrasonic Non-destructive Evaluation (NDE), an ultrasonic pulsed wave is transmitted into the materials using a transmitting/receiving transducer or arrays of transducers, that produces an image of ultrasonic reflectivity. The information inherent in ultrasonic signals or image are the echoes coming from flaws, grains, and boundaries of the tested material. The main goal of this evaluation is to determine the existence of defect, its size and its position; for that matter, an innovative methodology is proposed based on pattern recognition and wavelet analysis for flaws detection and localization. The pattern recognition technique used in this work is the neural network named ART2 (Adaptive Resonance Theory) trained by the information given by the time-scale information of the signals via the wavelet transform. A thorough analysis between the neural network training and the type wavelets used for the training has been developed, showing that the Symlet 6 wavelet is the optimum for our problem.

In this paper, a novel similarity classifier which synthesizes the adaptive resonance theory (ART) and the similarity classifier based on the Yu’s norm is proposed. The proposed ART-similarity classifier can not only carry out training without forgetting previously trained patterns but also be adaptive to changes in the environment. In order to test the proposed classifier, it is applied to the fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings. Before application to the fault diagnosis of bearings, considering computation burden principal component analysis (PCA) is proposed to reduce the number of features. The PCs are input the proposed classifier to diagnose the faulty bearings. The experiment results testify that the proposed classifier can identify the faults accurately. Furthermore, in order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed classifier further, it compares with other neural networks, such as the fuzzy ART, self-organising feature maps (SOFMs) and radial basis function (RBF) neural network through diagnosing the bearings under the same conditions. The comparison results confirm the superiority of the proposed method.

In order to discover the fault with roller bearing in time, a new fault diagnosis method based on Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and BP neural network is put forward in the paper. First, we get the fault signal through experiments. Then we use EMD to decompose the vibration signal into a series of single signals. We can extract main fault information from the single signals. The kurtosis coefficient of the single signals forms a feature vector which is used as the input data of the BP neural network. The trained BP neural network can be used for fault identification. Through analyzing, BP neural network can distinguish the fault into normal state, inner race fault, outer race fault. The results show that this method can gain very stable classification performance and good computational efficiency.

The condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of rolling element bearing is a very important research content in the field of gas turbine health management. In this paper, a hybrid fault diagnosis approach combining S-transform with artificial neural network (ANN) is developed to achieve the accurate feature extraction and effective fault diagnosis of rolling element bearing health status. Considering the nonlinear and non-stationary vibration characteristics of rolling element bearing under stable loading and rotational speeds, S-transform and singular value decomposition (SVD) theory are firstly used to process the vibration signal and extract its time-frequency information features. Then, radical basis function (RBF) neural network classification model is designed to carry out the state pattern recognition and fault diagnosis. As a practical application, the experimental data of rolling element bearing including four health status are analyzed to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach. The results demonstrate that the present hybrid fault diagnosis approach is very effective to extract the fault features and diagnose the fault pattern of rolling element bearing under different rotor speed, which may be a potential technology to enhance the condition monitoring of rotating equipment. Besides, the advantages of the developed approach are also confirmed by the comparisons with the other two approaches, i.e. the Wigner-Ville (WV) distribution and RBF neural network based method as well as the S-transform and Elman neural network based one.

Fault diagnosis is an important problem in the process of chemical industry and the artificial neural network is widely applied in fault diagnosis of chemical process. A hybrid algorithm combining ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm with back-propagation (BP) algorithm, also referred to as ACO-BP algorithm, is proposed to train the neural network weights and thresholds. The basic theory and steps of ACO-BP algorithm are given, and applied in fault diagnosis of the continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR). Experimental results prove that ACO-BP algorithm has good fault diagnosis precision, and it can detect the fault in CSTR promptly and effectively.
