Rotor stability and rotation accuracy, which are highly dependent on the dynamic coefficients of supporting hybrid bearings, are two important issues of high-speed water-lubricated spindles. To improve the spindles’ performance, the dynamic coefficients of high-speed water-lubricated hybrid bearings were experimentally identified by the noncontact harmonic excitation method and the additional unbalance excitation method, respectively. Comparisons between experimental results and theoretical predictions were made. The experimental technique and the identification model were validated to be effective. Besides, the influence of supply pressure and rotating speed on dynamic coefficients was also presented. As for different operating conditions, valuable guides were provided to investigate the dynamic performance of high-speed and ultra-high-speed spindles.

In general, the oil-film forces can be characterized by linear oil-film coefficients of hydrodynamic bearing. This paper proposes an experimental method to recognize the dynamic coefficients of a water lubricated high-speed hybrid bearing with stepped recesses. A test rig is constructed and experimental data are acquired under different conditions. And the unbalance responses method is used to identify the dynamic coefficients of the hybrid bearing system. Comparisons are made to verify the validity and accuracy of the theoretical analysis. The influence of operating parameters, such as supply pressure and rotating speed, on the dynamic coefficients of the system is discussed. The results indicate that the dynamic coefficients increase with the rotating speed when the supply pressure is low.

Under high and super-high speed, oil film of the journal bearing is easy to crack and then becomes cavitation. The existence of cavitation has an important effect on the work characteristics of the shaft. On the journal bearing experiment rig the cavitation characteristics of the three-groove journal beaing were studied. The influences of the shaft rotating speed and supply pressure on cavitation shape were investigated. The results show that rotating speed and supply pressure have a clear effect on the cavitation shape, and the number of cavitation strip in the rupture zone decreases when the supply pressure increases.

The dynamic performance of continuous girder under the train in a series of speed is studied through examples, and the main conclusions are given in the following. The resonance mechanism of continuous girder is similar to simply supported beam. The vehicle wheel load forms regular moving load series, which induces periodical action and resonance of the bridge. The damping ratio of bridge itself has less effect on the amplitude at the loading stage, but significant effects appear when the load departs from the bridge. The count of continuous spans also has less impact on the dynamic coefficients, so three continuous spans can be adopted for calculation and analysis. Span and fundamental frequency have significant influence on dynamic coefficients of bridge structures. To extend the span of the bridge structure can reduce the dynamic coefficient while keeping its frequency invariant. The fundamental frequencies of different bridges are corresponding to certain resonant speeds, which calls for the attention in the design.

The cavitation mechanism of a spiral oil wedge journal bearing was investigated on the experimental rig. The effects of rotating speed and supply pressure on the cavitation shape of oil film and the number of cavitation strip in the rupture zone were analyzed. The results show that the cavitation shape of oil film is a long strip. The number of cavitation strip increases when supply pressure has been improved, and the location of oil outlet must be designed optimally.

Cavitation boundary of a three-groove journal beaing was investigated on the journal bearing experimental rig. The influences of rotating speed and supply pressure on cavitation boundary were studied. And experimental equations of reformation location and the percent of rupture area are established. The results show that rupture location of oil film is not related with rotating speed and supply pressure, otherwise reformation location of oil film is effected greatly by them. The experimental equations lay foundations for next research on cavitation theory model and stability.

Abstract Trajectory synthesis for robot manipulators with redundant kinematic degrees-of-freedom has been studied by numerous investigators. Redundant manipulators are of interest since the redundant degrees-of-freedom can be used to improve the local and global kinematic and dynamic performance of a system. As a robot manipulator is forced to track a given trajectory, the required actuating torques (forces) may excite the natural modes of vibration of the system. Noting that manipulators with revolute joints have nonlinear dynamics, high harmonic excitation torques are generally generated even though such harmonics have been eliminated from the synthesized trajectories and filtered from the drive inputs. In this paper, a redundancy resolution method is developed based on the Trajectory Pattern Method (TPM) to synthesize trajectories such that the actuating torques required to realize them do not contain higher harmonic components with significant amplitudes. With such trajectories, a robot manipulator can operate at higher speeds and achieve higher tracking accuracy with suppressed residual vibration. As an example, optimal trajectories are synthesized for point to point motions of a plane 3R manipulator.

The development of technology requires higher load capacity, rotating speed, power-weight ratio, lower vibration, and noise with respect to the gear transmission. The new type microsegment gear’s tooth profile curve is composed of many microsegments. Previous researches indicate that the microsegment gear has a good static performance, while the dynamic behavior of the microsegment gear has never been investigated. This paper will focus on the dynamic performance of the gear. The profile deviation between microsegment gear and involute gear is regarded as a displacement excitation in the proposed dynamic model. The numerical analysis for three cases is conducted and the results shows that, in low-speed and heavy-load, medium-speed and medium-load conditions, microsegment gear and involute gear both exhibit a good performance, while, in high-speed and heavy-load condition, microsegment gear has a better performance than that of involute gear. The influence of backlash on the dynamic performance is also studied. It is found that the variation of backlash does not change the type of motion, but the vibration amplitude and the stability of the motion are much affected. The main idea in this paper is supposed to provide a novel method for the precision grinding of the microsegment gear.

This research investigation is focused on providing system performance under different operating conditions, with special focus on variations in the supply pressure. The investigations have been carried out for different system designs. The analysis of the results introduces the effect of system designs on its static and dynamic performance. Also, the investigations provide the effect of variations of system operating conditions and load value. A hydraulic system has been designed with variable velocity, pressure and load. The detailed examination has been carried out on a system that consists of a hydraulic power supply unit, control valves (pressure control valve, flow control valve, throttle valve and directional control valve). We have investigated the effect of adding a flow control valve (FCV) in the chosen circuit and also replacing the FCV with a proportional flow control valve (PFCV). In order to study the effect of this valve on system performance we examine the role of change of operating conditions and loading values on the system performance. Thus the displacement and speed of the piston of the hydraulic cylinder has been experimented under different values of supply pressure, flow rate, and load. We make this investigation to develop the performance evaluation by replacing the (FCV) by proportional flow control valve (PFCV) via position control so that one can achieve the static and dynamic performance of the system more accurate. Apparent improvement in flow rate ranges from 8% to 29.5% and dynamic response from 30 to 64%. The results reveal that this methodology allows one to achieve high quality of the product.

An analysis is conducted and solutions are provided for the dynamic performance of high speed hybrid thrust bearing. By adopting bulk flow theory, the turbulent Reynolds equation is solved numerically with the different orifice diameter and supply pressure. The results show that increasing supply pressure can significantly improve the bearing stiffness and damping, while the orifice diameters make a different effect on the bearing stiffness and damping.

Tilting-pad gas bearings are widely used in high-speed rotating machines due to their inherent stability characteristics. This paper advances the analytical method for prediction of the dynamic performances of tilting-pad gas bearings. The main advantage of the analytical method is that the complete set of dynamic coefficients of tilting-pad gas bearings can be obtained. The predictions show that the perturbation frequency has the strong effects on the dynamic coefficients of gas bearings. In general, at lower perturbation frequency, the equivalent direct stiffness coefficients increase with frequency, whereas equivalent direct damping coefficients dramatically reduce. For higher perturbation frequency, the dynamic coefficients are nearly independent of the frequency. Moreover, the equivalent dynamic coefficients of four-pad tilting-pad gas bearing obtained by the method in this paper are in good agreement with those obtained by Zhu and San Andres [(2007), “Rotordynamic Performance of Flexure Pivot Hydrostatic Gas Bearings for Oil-Free Turbomachinery,” ASME J. Eng. Gas Turbines Power, 129(4), pp. 1020–1027] in the published paper. The results validate the feasibility of the method presented in this paper in calculating the dynamic coefficients of gas-lubricated tilting-pad bearings.
