Crossing the legs at the knees, during BP measurement, is one of the several physiological stimuli that considerably influence the accuracy of BP measurements. Therefore, it is paramount to develop an appropriate prediction model for interpreting influence of crossed legs on BP. This research work described the use of principal component analysis- (PCA-) fused forward stepwise regression (FSWR), artificial neural network (ANN), adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), and least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) models for prediction of BP reactivity to crossed legs among the normotensive and hypertensive participants. The evaluation of the performance of the proposed prediction models using appropriate statistical indices showed that the PCA-based LS-SVM (PCA-LS-SVM) model has the highest prediction accuracy with coefficient of determination (R2) = 93.16%, root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.27, and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) = 5.71 for SBP prediction in normotensive subjects. Furthermore, R2 = 96.46%, RMSE = 0.19, and MAPE = 1.76 for SBP prediction and R2 = 95.44%, RMSE = 0.21, and MAPE = 2.78 for DBP prediction in hypertensive subjects using the PCA-LSSVM model. This assessment presents the importance and advantages posed by hybrid computing models for the prediction of variables in biomedical research studies.

The traditional methods cannot be used to meet the requirements of rapid and objective detection of meat freshness. Electronic nose (E-Nose), computer vision (CV), and artificial tactile (AT) sensory technologies can be used to mimic humans’ compressive sensory functions of smell, look, and touch when making judgement of meat quality (freshness). Though individual E-Nose, CV, and AT sensory technologies have been used to detect the meat freshness, the detection results vary and are not reliable. In this paper, a new method has been proposed through the integration of E-Nose, CV, and AT sensory technologies for capturing comprehensive meat freshness parameters and the data fusion method for analysing the complicated data with different dimensions and units of six odour parameters of E-Nose, 9 colour parameters of CV, and 4 rubbery parameters of AT for effective meat freshness detection. The pork and chicken meats have been selected for a validation test. The total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N) assays are used to define meat freshness as the standard criteria for validating the effectiveness of the proposed method. The principal component analysis (PCA) and support vector machine (SVM) are used as unsupervised and supervised pattern recognition methods to analyse the source data and the fusion data of the three instruments, respectively. The experimental and data analysis results show that compared to a single technology, the fusion of E-Nose, CV, and AT technologies significantly improves the detection performance of various freshness meat products. In addition, partial least squares (PLS) is used to construct TVB-N value prediction models, in which the fusion data is input. The root mean square error predictions (RMSEP) for the sample pork and chicken meats are 1.21 and 0.98, respectively, in which the coefficient of determination (R2) is 0.91 and 0.94. This means that the proposed method can be used to effectively detect meat freshness and the storage time (days).

Abstract In this paper, the trap efficiency (TE) of retention dams was investigated using laboratory experiments. To map the relation between TE and involved parameters, artificial intelligence (AI) methods including artificial neural network (ANN), adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and support vector machine (SVM) were utilized. Results of experiments indicated that the range of TE varies between 30 and 98%; hence, this structure can be recommended to control sediment transport in watershed management plans. Experimental results showed that by increasing the longitudinal slope of streams, TE decreases. This finding was observed for Vf/Vs parameter, as well. By increasing the mean diameter grain size (D50) and specific gravity of sediments (Gs), TE increases. Results of all applied AI models demonstrated that all of them have suitable performance; however, the minimum data dispersivity was observed in SVM outcomes. It is notable that the best performance of transfer, membership and kernel functions were related to tansig, gaussmf and radial basis function (RBF) for ANN, SVM and ANFIS, respectively.

This study aims to investigate the prediction of critical buckling load of steel columns using two hybrid Artificial Intelligence (AI) models such as Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System optimized by Genetic Algorithm (ANFIS-GA) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System optimized by Particle Swarm Optimization (ANFIS-PSO). For this purpose, a total number of 57 experimental buckling tests of novel high strength steel Y-section columns were collected from the available literature to generate the dataset for training and validating the two proposed AI models. Quality assessment criteria such as coefficient of determination (R2), Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) were used to validate and evaluate the performance of the prediction models. Results showed that both ANFIS-GA and ANFIS-PSO had a strong ability in predicting the buckling load of steel columns, but ANFIS-PSO (R2 = 0.929, RMSE = 60.522 and MAE = 44.044) was slightly better than ANFIS-GA (R2 = 0.916, RMSE = 65.371 and MAE = 48.588). The two models were also robust even with the presence of input variability, as investigated via Monte Carlo simulations. This study showed that the hybrid AI techniques could help constructing an efficient numerical tool for buckling analysis.

The current pandemic of the new coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), or COVID-19, has received wide attention by scholars and researchers. The vast increase in infected people is a significant challenge for each country and the international community in general. The prediction and forecasting of the number of infected people (so-called confirmed cases) is a critical issue that helps in understanding the fast spread of COVID-19. Therefore, in this article, we present an improved version of the ANFIS (adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system) model to forecast the number of infected people in four countries, Italy, Iran, Korea, and the USA. The improved version of ANFIS is based on a new nature-inspired optimizer, called the marine predators algorithm (MPA). The MPA is utilized to optimize the ANFIS parameters, enhancing its forecasting performance. Official datasets of the four countries are used to evaluate the proposed MPA-ANFIS. Moreover, we compare MPA-ANFIS to several previous methods to evaluate its forecasting performance. Overall, the outcomes show that MPA-ANFIS outperforms all compared methods in almost all performance measures, such as Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Root Mean Squared Relative Error (RMSRE), and Coefficient of Determination( R 2 ). For instance, according to the results of the testing set, the R 2 of the proposed model is 96.48%, 98.59%, 98.74%, and 95.95% for Korea, Italy, Iran, and the USA, respectively. More so, the MAE is 60.31, 3951.94, 217.27, and 12,979, for Korea, Italy, Iran, and the USA, respectively.

Modeling of suspended sediment load in rivers has a major role in a proper management of water resources. Artificial intelligence has been identified as an efficient way to model the complex nonlinear hydrological relationship. In this study, Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), in addition to two different kinds of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) i.e. feedforward and radial basis networks were used and compared to model the suspended sediment load (SSL) in Tigris River-Baghdad using the streamflow discharge as input. To this end, an intermittent data of SSL and streamflow were collected over the period 1962-1981 from Sarai station in Baghdad. 70 % of these data was used to calibrate (train) the networks and the remaining 30% for the validation (test). The coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE) were used to judge whether the observed and modelled data belong to the same distribution. Results revealed that the ANFIS model outperform the other methods. R2, RMSE, and NSE of ANFIS during the calibration phase were equal to 0.58, 75617, and 0.58, respectively and during the validation were 0.72, 27944, and 0.59, respectively. Therefore, ANFIS approach is recommended to estimate the river suspended sediment load.

The main target of this research work is to model the output performance of adsorption water desalination system (AWDS) in terms of switching and cycle time using artificial intelligence. The output performance of the ADC system is expressed by the specific daily water production (SDWP), the coefficient of performance (COP), and specific cooling power (SCP). A robust Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) model of SDWP, COP, and SCP was built using the measured data. To demonstrate the superiority of the suggested ANFIS model, the model results were compared with those achieved by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) based on the maximum coefficient of determination and minimum error between measured and estimated data in addition to the mean square error (MSE). Applying ANOVA, the average coefficient-of-determination values were 0.8872 and 0.8223, respectively, for training and testing. These values are increased to 1.0 and 0.9673, respectively, for training and testing thanks to ANFIS based modeling. In addition, ANFIS modelling decreased the RMSE value of all datasets by 83% compared with ANOVA. In sum, the main findings confirmed the superiority of ANFIS modeling of the output performance of adsorption water desalination system compared with ANOVA.

Static Poisson's ratio (νstatic) is a key factor in determine the in-situ stresses in the reservoir section. νstatic is used to calculate the minimum horizontal stress which will affect the design of the optimum mud widow and the density of cement slurry while drilling. In addition, it also affects the design of the casing setting depth. νstatic is very important for field development and the incorrect estimation of it may lead to heavy investment decisions. νstatic can be measured in the lab using a real reservoir cores. The laboratory measurements of νstatic will take long time and also will increase the overall cost. The goal of this study is to develop accurate models for predicting νstatic for carbonate reservoirs based on wireline log data using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. More than 610 core and log data points from carbonate reservoirs were used to train and validate the AI models. The more accurate AI model will be used to generate a new correlation for calculating the νstatic. The developed artificial neural network (ANN) model yielded more accurate results for estimating νstatic based on log data; sonic travel times and bulk density compared to adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and support vector machine (SVM) methods. The developed empirical equation for νstatic gave a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.97 and an average absolute percentage error (AAPE) of 1.13%. The developed technique will help geomechanical engineers to estimate a complete trend of νstatic without the need for coring and laboratory work and hence will reduce the overall cost of the well.

Acoustical measures of vocal functions are used in the assessments of voice disorders and monitoring the subject's improvement with speech therapy. In this chapter, a hybrid approach is proposed to identify the acute spots in pathological speech signals. These spots represents where the speech disorder occurs. The speech training for that specific portion of speech in particular could be given for enhancing the speeches. Dimensionality reduction is done using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) on Mel Frequency Cepstrum Coefficients (MFCC) extracted. By statistical method it is proved that overall 91.60% of the words were classified correctly. The features were trained using Support Vector Machines (SVM) for categorizing normally and abnormally pronounced words. The peaks found by Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) in abnormal words is made use of in the Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) for finding the acute spots in which the aberration has occurred in the word. This hybrid approach was found to have around 98% accuracy.

Abstract Ecological-environmental quality was evaluated for Tabriz and Rasht cities (in Iran) with different climate conditions using artificial intelligence (AI) and remote sensing (RS) techniques. Sampling sites were surveyed and ecological experts assigned eco-environment background values (EBVs) of sites. Then, eco-environmental attributes were extracted as RS derived, and meteorological attributes were observed. Three AI-based models, artificial neural network (ANN), support vector regression (SVR), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) were then applied to learn the relationship between a target set of known EBVs and eco-environmental attributes as inputs. According to the results of the single models, none of the models could evaluate EBV appropriately for all regions and classes. Thereafter, three combining techniques were applied to the outputs of single models to enhance spatial evaluation of EBV. It was observed that the modeling for Tabriz led to more accurate results. It seems that the better network performance for Tabriz may be due to a more heterogeneous dataset in this kind of climate. Furthermore, results indicated that SVR led to better performance than both ANN and ANFIS models, but the models' combining techniques were shown to be superior. Combining techniques enhanced performance of single AI modeling up to 26% in the verification step.

High blood pressure (BP) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, optimal precision in measurement of BP is appropriate in clinical and research studies. In this work, anthropometric characteristics including age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), and arm circumference (AC) were used as independent predictor variables for the prediction of BP reactivity to talking. Principal component analysis (PCA) was fused with artificial neural network (ANN), adaptive neurofuzzy inference system (ANFIS), and least square-support vector machine (LS-SVM) model to remove the multicollinearity effect among anthropometric predictor variables. The statistical tests in terms of coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) revealed that PCA based LS-SVM (PCA-LS-SVM) model produced a more efficient prediction of BP reactivity as compared to other models. This assessment presents the importance and advantages posed by PCA fused prediction models for prediction of biological variables.
