The present study reports the use of raw, iron oxide, and aluminum oxide impregnated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) ions from aqueous solution. The raw CNTs were impregnated with 1% and 10% loadings (weight %) of iron oxide and aluminum oxide nanoparticles using wet impregnation technique. The synthesized materials were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Batch adsorption experiments were performed to assess the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) ions from water and the effects of pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration of the Cr(VI) ions were investigated. Results of the study revealed that impregnated CNTs achieved significant increase in the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) ions compared to raw CNTs. In fact, both CNTs impregnated with 10% loading of iron and aluminum oxides were able to remove up to 100% of Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solution. Isotherm studies were carried out using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Adsorption kinetics of Cr(VI) ions from water was found to be well described by the pseudo-second-order model. The results suggest that metallic oxide impregnated CNTs have very good potential application in the removal of Cr(VI) ions from water resulting in better environmental protection.

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and iron oxide impregnated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-iron oxide) were investigated for the adsorption of hazardous toluene and paraxylene (p-xylene) from aqueous solution. Pure CNTs were impregnated with iron oxides nanoparticles using wet impregnation technique. Various characterization techniques including thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, elemental dispersion spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and nitrogen adsorption analysis were used to study the thermal degradation, surface morphology, purity, and surface area of the materials. Batch adsorption experiments show that iron oxide impregnated CNTs have higher degree of removal of p-xylene (i.e., 90%) compared with toluene (i.e., 70%), for soaking time 2 h, with pollutant initial concentration 100 ppm, at pH 6 and shaking speed of 200 rpm at 25°C. Pseudo-second-order model provides better fitting for the toluene and p-xylene adsorption. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models demonstrate good fitting for the adsorption data of toluene and p-xylene.

Wastewater containing pharmaceutical residual components must be treated before being discharged to the environment. This study was conducted to investigate the efficiency of tungsten-carbon nanocomposite in diclofenac removal using design of experiment (DOE). The 27 batch adsorption experiments were done by choosing three effective parameters (pH, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration) at three levels. The nanocomposite was prepared by tungsten oxide and activated carbon powder in a ratio of 1 to 4 mass. The remaining concentration of diclofenac was measured by a spectrometer with adding reagents of 2, 2′-bipyridine, and ferric chloride. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to determine the main and interaction effects. The equilibrium time for removal process was determined as 30 min. It was observed that the pH had the lowest influence on the removal efficiency of diclofenac. Nanocomposite gave a high removal at low concentration of 5.0 mg/L. The maximum removal for an initial concentration of 5.0 mg/L was 88.0% at contact time of 30 min. The results of ANOVA showed that adsorbent mass was among the most effective variables. Using DOE as an efficient method revealed that tungsten-carbon nanocomposite has high efficiency in the removal of residual diclofenac from the aqueous solution.

Purpose With respect to two new subjects, i.e. nanofluids and microchannels, in heat transfer systems and modern techniques used for building them, this paper aims to study on effect of using aluminum oxide nanoparticles in non-Newtonian fluid of aqueous solution of carboxy-methyl cellulose in microtube and through application of different slip coefficients to achieve various qualities on surface of microtube. Design/methodology/approach Simultaneously, the effect of presence of nanoparticles and phenomenon of slip and temperature jump has been explored in non-Newtonian nanofluid in this essay. The assumption of homogeneity of nanofluid and fixed temperature of wall in microtube has been used in modeling processes. Findings The results have been presented as diagrams of velocity, temperature and Nusselt Number and the investigations have indicated that addition of nanoparticles to the base fluid and increase in microtube slip coefficient might improve rate of heat transfer in microtube. Originality/value The flow of non-Newtonian nanofluid of aqueous solution of carboxy methyl cellulose-aluminum oxide has been determined in a microtube for the first time.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have become the focus of attention of many scientists and companies worldwide. CNT-based filters have a prospective advantage in comparison to the commercial filters already in operation because they are light weight and do not require electricity to operate. This investigation handles the filtration efficiency of manganese and iron from aqueous solution using commercial multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) (Taunit). The effects of different parameters such as CNT filter mass, concentration of manganese and iron in aqueous solution and pH of aqueous solution on removal of these heavy metals are determined. From these investigations, the removal efficiency of manganese and iron could reach 71.5% and 52% respectively for concentration 50 ppm, suggesting that Taunit is an excellent adsorbent for manganese and iron removal from water. There was a significant increase in removal efficiency at pH = 3 for manganese and pH = 8 for iron. The effect of oxidation on the structural of MWCNTs was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) techniques to investigate the functionalization with oxygen-containing and outer diameter distribution. It was found that functionalized CNT-based filters are more efficient at removing manganese and iron from aqueous solutions. Oxidized MWCNTs may be a promising candidate for heavy metal ion removal from industrial wastewater.

AbstractWater pollution is a major global challenge given the increasing growth in the industry and the human population. The present study aims to investigate the efficiency of TiO2 and γ-Al2O3 nanoadsorbents for removal of copper (Cu(II)) from aqueous solution as influenced by different chemical factors including pH, initial concentration, background electrolyte and, ionic strength. The batch adsorption experiment was performed according to standard experimental methods. Various isotherm models (Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich) were fitted to the equilibrium data. According to geochemical modeling data, adsorption was a predominant mechanism for Cu(II) removal from aqueous solution. Calculated isotherm equations parameters were evidence of the physical adsorption mechanism of Cu(II) onto the surface of the nanoparticles. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm model could well fit the experimental equilibrium data at different pH values. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of TiO2 and γ-Al2O3 nanosorbents were found to 9288 and 3607 mg kg−1 at the highest pH value (pH 8) and the highest initial Cu(II) concentration (80 mg L−1) respectively. Copper )Cu(II) (removal efficiency with TiO2 and γ-Al2O3 nanoparticles increased by increasing pH. Copper )Cu(II) (adsorption deceased by increasing ionic strength. The maximum Cu(II) adsorption (4510 mg kg−1) with TiO2 nanoparticles was found at 0.01 M ionic strength in the presence of NaCl. Thermodynamic calculations show the adsorption of Cu(II) ions onto the nanoparticles was spontaneous in nature. Titanium oxide (TiO2) nanosorbents could, therefore, serve as an efficient and low-cost nanomaterial for the remediation of Cu(II) ions polluted aqueous solutions.

In this work, batch adsorption experiments were carried out for the removal of Methylene Blue (MB) from aqueous solutions using Typha australis leaf as a low cost adsorbent. The effects of some variables governing the efficiency of the process such as adsorbent mass, pH, ionic strength, contact time and temperature were investigated. The adsorption kinetic data were analyzed using the Pseudo First Order (PFO) and Pseudo Second Order (PSO) models. The experimental equilibrium data were analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The results show that the PSO model is the best for describing the adsorption of MB by Typha australis for all initial MB concentrations. The equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir model with the monolayer adsorption capacity for MB-Typha australis leaf system was of 103.12 mg g-1. The values of activation parameters such as free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°) and entropy (ΔS°) were also determined as - 4.44 kJ mol−1, 55.13 kJ mol−1 and 203.21 J mol−1 K−1, respectively. The thermodynamics parameters of MB-Typha australis system indicate spontaneous and endothermic process. These results indicate that the Typha australis leaf can be feasibly employed for the eradication of MB from aqueous solution.
