The rolling element bearing is a core component of many systems such as aircraft, train, steamboat, and machine tool, and their failure can lead to reduced capability, downtime, and even catastrophic breakdowns. Due to misoperation, manufacturing deficiencies, or the lack of monitoring and maintenance, it is often found to be the most unreliable component within these systems. Therefore, effective and efficient fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings has an important role in ensuring the continued safe and reliable operation of their host systems. This study presents a trace ratio criterion-based kernel discriminant analysis (TR-KDA) for fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings. The binary immune genetic algorithm (BIGA) is employed to solve the trace ratio problem in TR-KDA. The numerical results obtained using extensive simulation indicate that the proposed TR-KDA using BIGA (called TR-KDA-BIGA) can effectively and efficiently classify different classes of rolling element bearing data, while also providing the capability of real-time visualization that is very useful for the practitioners to monitor the health status of rolling element bearings. Empirical comparisons show that the proposed TR-KDA-BIGA performs better than existing methods in classifying different classes of rolling element bearing data. The proposed TR-KDA-BIGA may be a promising tool for fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings.

Nonlinear characteristics are ubiquitous in the vibration signals produced by rolling element bearings. Fractal dimensions are effective tools to illustrate nonlinearity. This paper proposes a new approach based on Multiscale General Fractal Dimensions (MGFDs) to realize fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings, which are robust to the effects of variation in operating conditions. The vibration signals of bearing are analyzed to extract the general fractal dimensions in multiscales, which are in turn utilized to construct a feature space to identify fault pattern. Finally, bearing faults are revealed by pattern recognition. Case studies are carried out to evaluate the validity and accuracy of the approach. It is verified that this approach is effective for fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings under various operating conditions via experiment and data analysis.

This paper proposed a new method of rolling element bearing (REB) fault diagnosis for metallurgical machinery. Mainly it stresses on the combination of spectral kurtosis (SK) and supports vector machine (SVM), using genetic algorithm (GA) to optimize the parameters of support vector machine at the same time. Thus, this study aims to integrate SK, GA and SVM in order to develop an intelligent REB fault detector for metallurgical machineries. Simulation study indicates that this method can effectively detect the REB faults with a high accuracy.

Rolling element bearings are widely used in various industrial machines. Fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings is a necessary tool to prevent any unexpected accidents and improve industrial efficiency. Although proved to be a powerful method in detecting the resonance band excited by faults, the spectral kurtosis (SK) exposes an obvious weakness in the case of impulsive background noise. To well process the bearing fault signal in the presence of impulsive noise, this paper proposes a fault diagnosis method based on the cyclic correntropy (CCE) function and its spectrum. Furthermore, an important parameter of CCE function, namely kernel size, is analyzed to emphasize its critical influence on the fault diagnosis performance. Finally, comparisons with the SK-based Fast Kurtogram are conducted to highlight the superiority of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the proposed method not only largely suppresses the impulsive noise, but also has a robust self-adaptation ability. The application of the proposed method is validated on a simulated signal and real data, including rolling element bearing data of a train axle.

The vibration response of rolling element bearing has a close relation with its fault. An accurate evaluation of the bearing vibration response is essential to the bearing fault diagnosis. At present, most bearing dynamics models are built based on rigid assumptions, which may not faithfully reveal the dynamic characteristics of bearing in the presence of fault. Moreover, previous similar works mainly focus on the fault with a specified size without considering the varying contact characteristics as the fault evolves. This paper developed an explicit dynamics finite element model for the bearing with three types of raceway faults considering the flexibility of each bearing component in order to accurately study the contact characteristic and vibration mechanism of defective bearings in the process of fault evolution. The developed model is validated by comparing its simulation results with both analytical and experimental results. The dynamic contact patterns between the rolling elements and the fault, the additional displacement due to the fault and the faulty characteristics within the bearing vibration signal during the fault evolution process are investigated. The analysis results from this work can provide practitioners an in-depth understanding towards the internal contact characteristics with the existence of raceway fault and theoretical basis for rolling bearing fault diagnosis.
