Background.Skin Cancer Index (SCI) is a specific questionnaire measuring health related quality of life (HRQL) in patients with cervicofacial non-melanoma skin cancer (CFNMSC). The original scale has recently been adapted and validated into Spanish.Objectives.Evaluate the responsiveness of the Spanish version of SCI.Methods.Patients with CFNMSC candidate for surgical treatment were administered the questionnaire at time of diagnostic (t0), 7 days after surgery (t1), and 5 months after surgery (t2). The scale and subscales scores (C1: social/appearance, C2: emotional) were then evaluated. Differences betweent0-t1,t1-t2, andt0-t2were determined and a gender-and-age segmented analysis was performed.Results.88 patients, 54.8% male, mean age 62.5 years, completed the study. Differences betweent0-t1andt1-t2scores were statistically significant (p<0.05). The lowest values were found at time of diagnosis and postsurgery. Women and patients under 65 years showed the lowest values at the three times.Limitations.Concrete geographic and cultural area. Clinical and histological variables are not analysed.Conclusions.Our results confirm responsiveness of the Spanish version of the SCI. Further development of the instrument in Spanish-speaking countries and populations will make it possible to extend worldwide research and knowledge horizons on skin cancer.

Abstract Background Evaluation of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is considered an important aspect of clinical assessment and health research. Chronic Otitis Media (COM) is related to the quality of life deterioration subsequent to COM symptoms, social communication impairments and lower work performance. However, there is no reliable information regarding the impact of this disease on health and quality of life in many resource-poor countries. Therefore, we translated into Spanish and culturally adapted the Chronic Otitis Media Questionnaire-12 (COMQ-12) for the evaluation of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) of Chronic Otitis Media (COM) in adult patients. Also, we assessed the psychometric properties of our version of the questionnaire. Methods Two otology referral centers in Bogotá, Colombia were included. The Spanish version of COMQ-12 was applied twice to 200 adult patients with confirmed COM diagnosis and to 31 healthy controls in order to perform the validation process and assess the internal consistency of this questionnaire. Psychometric characteristics (replicability, reliability, and validity) of the COMQ-12 were assessed. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were conducted via structural equation modeling (SEM) in order to test the questionnaire’s structure. Results The Spanish version of the COMQ-12 showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s Alpha=0.8526, McDonald’s Omega = 0.8901). Coefficients corresponding to Lin’s Concordance test and test-retest reliability were 0.945 and 0.82 respectively. Correlation between the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the COMQ-12 was = 0.676 (IC 95% = 0.593; 0.745). Factor analysis of the Spanish version of the COMQ-12 indicated a questionnaire structure with three domains: smelly discharge related symptoms; hearing loss related symptoms; and impact on work, lifestyle and health services. Conclusion This Spanish version of the COMQ-12 showed high reliability and high internal consistency. This questionnaire can be used as an objective clinical tool to assess the HRQoL of patients who have a COM diagnosis.

Background: The SF-12 has been used to measure health-related quality of life in populations with various health conditions. However, few studies have examined the conceptual equivalence and psychometric properties of the SF-12 in Hispanics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Spanish version of the SF-12v2® in Hispanics with type 2 diabetes and their family members. Methods: Data were collected as part of an intervention study for Hispanics with type 2 diabetes and their family members. Participants (N=182) were recruited from clinics and communities in the Southeastern U.S. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews. Reliability and validity were assessed using composite reliability, principal components analysis and known-groups comparisons. Results: The reliability of the physical and mental component summaries was adequate. Known-groups comparisons revealed lower average health-related quality of life for every subscale of the Spanish version of SF-12v2® as well as for the 2 component summaries. Factorial validity was supported for the 8 subscale structure but less so for the 2 component summaries. Conclusion: The Spanish version of the SF-12v2® showed good reliability and validity. Healthcare providers can use the SF-12v2® to measure health-related quality of life in Hispanics with type 2 diabetes and their family members.
