In providing acceptable navigational solutions, Location-Based Services (LBS) in land navigation rely mostly on integration of Global Positioning System (GPS) and Inertial Navigation System (INS) measurements for accuracy and robustness. The GPS/INS integrated system can provide better land-navigation solutions than the ones any standalone system can provide. Low-cost Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs), based on Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) technology, revolutionized the land-navigation system by virtue of their low-cost miniaturization and widespread availability. However, their accuracy is strongly affected by their inherent systematic and stochastic errors, which depend mainly on environmental conditions. The environmental noise and nonlinearities prevent obtaining optimal localization estimates in Land Vehicular Navigation (LVN) while using traditional Kalman Filters (KF). The main goal of this paper is to effectively eliminate stochastic errors of MEMS-based IMUs. The proposed solution is divided into two main components: (1) improving noise cancellation, using advanced stochastic error models in MEMS-based IMUs based on combined Autoregressive Processes (ARP) and first-order Gauss-Markov Process (1GMP), and (2) modeling the low-cost GPS/INS integration, using a hybrid Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) and Second-Order Extended Kalman Filter (SOEKF). The results obtained show that the proposed methods perform better than the traditional techniques do in different stochastic and dynamic situations.

Characterized by small volume, low cost, and low power, MEMS inertial sensors are widely concerned and applied in navigation research, environmental monitoring, military, and so on. Notably in indoor and pedestrian navigation, its easily portable feature seems particularly indispensable and important. However, MEMS inertial sensor has inborn low precision and is impressionable and sometimes goes against accurate navigation or even becomes seriously unstable when working for a period of time and the initial alignment and calibration are invalid. A thought of adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is relied on, and an assistive control modulated method is presented in this paper, which is newly designed to improve the inertial sensor performance by black box control and inference. The repeatability and long-time tendency of the MEMS sensors are tested and analyzed by ALLAN method. The parameters of ANFIS models are trained using reasonable fuzzy control strategy, with high-precision navigation system for reference as well as MEMS sensor property. The MEMS error nonlinearity is measured and modulated through the peculiarity of the fuzzy control convergence, to enhance the MEMS function and the whole MEMS system property. Performance of the proposed model has been experimentally verified using low-cost MEMS inertial sensors, and the MEMS output error is well compensated. The test results indicate that ANFIS system trained by high-precision navigation system can efficiently provide corrections to MEMS output and meet the requirement on navigation performance.

A dual-axis rotational Inertial Navigation System (INS) has received wide attention in recent years because of high performance and low cost. However, some errors of inertial sensors such as stochastic errors are not averaged out automatically during navigation. Therefore a Twice Position-fix Reset (TPR) method is provided to enhance accuracy of a dual-axis rotational INS by compensating stochastic errors. According to characteristics of an azimuth error introduced by stochastic errors of an inertial sensor in the dual-axis rotational INS, both an azimuth error and a radial-position error are much better corrected by the TPR method based on an optimised error propagation equation. As a result, accuracy of the dual-axis rotational INS is prominently enhanced by the TPR method, as is verified by simulations and field tests.

A constrained low-cost SINS/OD filter aided with magnetometer is proposed in this paper. The filter is designed to provide a land vehicle navigation solution by fusing the measurements of the microelectromechanical systems based inertial measurement unit (MEMS IMU), the magnetometer (MAG), and the velocity measurement from odometer (OD). First, accelerometer and magnetometer integrated algorithm is studied to stabilize the attitude angle. Next, a SINS/OD/MAG integrated navigation system is designed and simulated, using an adaptive Kalman filter (AKF). It is shown that the accuracy of the integrated navigation system will be implemented to some extent. The field-test shows that the azimuth misalignment angle will diminish to less than 1°. Finally, an outliers detection algorithm is studied to estimate the velocity measurement bias of the odometer. The experimental results show the enhancement in restraining observation outliers that improves the precision of the integrated navigation system.

MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical-Systems) technology applied to the field of Radio Frequency systems (i.e. RF-MEMS) has emerged in the last 10-15 years as a valuable and viable solution to manufacture low-cost and very high-performance passive components, like variable capacitors, inductors and micro-relays, as well as complex networks, like tunable filters, reconfigurable impedance matching networks and phase shifters, and so on. The availability of such components and their integration within RF systems (e.g. radio transceivers, radars, satellites, etc.) enables boosting the characteristics and performance of telecommunication systems, addressing for instance a significant increase of their reconfigurability. The benefits resulting from the employment of RF-MEMS technology are paramount, being some of them the reduction of hardware redundancy and power consumption, along with the operability of the same RF system according to multiple standards. After framing more in detail the whole context of RF MEMS technology, this paper will provide a brief introduction on a typical RF-MEMS technology platform. Subsequently, some relevant examples of lumped RF MEMS passive elements and complex reconfigurable networks will be reported along with their measured RF performance and characteristics.

AbstractVitrinite reflectance (VR) is considered the most used maturity indicator of source rocks. Although vitrinite reflectance is an acceptable parameter for maturity and is widely used, it is sometimes difficult to measure. Furthermore, Rock-Eval pyrolysis is a current technique for geochemical investigations and evaluating source rock by their quality and quantity of organic matter, which provide low cost, quick, and valid information. Predicting vitrinite reflectance by using a quick and straightforward method like Rock-Eval pyrolysis results in determining accurate and reliable values of VR with consuming low cost and time. Previous studies used empirical equations for vitrinite reflectance prediction by the Tmax data, which was accompanied by poor results. Therefore, finding a way for precise vitrinite reflectance prediction by Rock-Eval data seems useful. For this aim, vitrinite reflectance values are predicted by 15 distinct machine learning models of the decision tree, random forest, support vector machine, group method of data handling, radial basis function, multilayer perceptron, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, and multilayer perceptron and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, which are coupled with evolutionary optimization methods such as grasshopper optimization algorithm, bat algorithm, particle swarm optimization, and genetic algorithm, with four inputs of Rock-Eval pyrolysis parameters of Tmax, S1/TOC, HI, and depth for the first time. Statistical evaluations indicate that the decision tree is the most precise model for VR prediction, which can estimate vitrinite reflectance precisely. The comparison between the decision tree and previous proposed empirical equations indicates that the machine learning method performs much more accurately.

The application of Beidou Satellite Navigation System (BDS) is developing rapidly. To satisfy the increasing demand for positioning performance, single-frequency precise point positioning (SFPPP) has been a focus in recent years. By introducing the SFPPP technique into the INS/BDS integrated system, higher navigation accuracy can be obtained. Cycle slip, which is caused by signal blockage during the measurement of the carrier phase, is a challenge for SFPPP application. In the INS/SFPPP-BDS integrated system, cycle slip can cause serious bias in BDS carrier phase measurements. In this paper, a new INS/SFBDS-PPP tightly coupled navigation system and a robust adaptive filtering method are proposed. Using a low-cost single-frequency receiver integrated with INS, an observation model was built based on the pseudo range and carrier phase by PPP preprocessing. The cycle slip was introduced into the state vector to improve the estimation precision. The test statistics, comprising the innovation and its covariance, were used to estimate the time at which cycle slip occurred and its amplitude to compensate for its effect on the observation. Finally, the proposed system model and algorithm are validated by simulation.

The adequate automatic detection of driver fatigue is a very valuable approach for the prevention of traffic accidents. Devices that can determine drowsiness conditions accurately must inherently be portable, adaptable to different vehicles and drivers, and robust to conditions such as illumination changes or visual occlusion. With the advent of a new generation of computationally powerful embedded systems such as the Raspberry Pi, a new category of real-time and low-cost portable drowsiness detection systems could become standard tools. Usually, the proposed solutions using this platform are limited to the definition of thresholds for some defined drowsiness indicator or the application of computationally expensive classification models that limits their use in real-time. In this research, we propose the development of a new portable, low-cost, accurate, and robust drowsiness recognition device. The proposed device combines complementary drowsiness measures derived from a temporal window of eyes (PERCLOS, ECD) and mouth (AOT) states through a fuzzy inference system deployed in a Raspberry Pi with the capability of real-time response. The system provides three degrees of drowsiness (Low-Normal State, Medium-Drowsy State, and High-Severe Drowsiness State), and was assessed in terms of its computational performance and efficiency, resulting in a significant accuracy of 95.5% in state recognition that demonstrates the feasibility of the approach.

This paper describes an integrated MEMS IMU and GNSS system for vehicles. The GNSS system is developed to accurately estimate the vehicle azimuth, and the integrated GNSS/IMU provides attitude, position and velocity. This research is aimed at producing a low-cost integrated navigation system for vehicles. Thus, an inexpensive solid-state MEMS IMU is used to smooth the noise and to provide a high bandwidth response. The integration system with uncertain dynamics modeling and uncertain measurement noise is also studied. An interval adaptive Kalman filter is developed for such an uncertain integrated system, since the standard extended Kalman filter (SKF) is no longer applicable, and a method of adaptive factor construction with uncertain parameter is proposed for the nonlinear integrated GNSS/IMU system. The results from the actual GNSS/IMU integrated system indicate that the filtering method proposed is effective.

Henry’s constants for different existing compounds in water have great importance in transfer calculations. Measurement of these constants face different difficulties including high costs of experiment and low accuracy of measurement apparatus. Due to these facts, proposing a low cost and accurate approach becomes highlighted. To this end, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) have been used as Henry’s constant predictor tools. The molecular structure of compounds has been used as inputs of models. After training the models, the visual and mathematical studies of outputs have been done. The coefficients of determination of LSSVM and ANFIS algorithms are 0.999 and 0.990 respectively. According to the comprehensiveness of databank and accurate prediction of algorithms, it can be concluded that LSSVM and ANFIS algorithms are accurate methods for prediction of Henry’s constant in wide range of chemical structure of compounds in water.
