A novel feature extraction and selection scheme is presented for intelligent engine fault diagnosis by utilizing two-dimensional nonnegative matrix factorization (2DNMF), mutual information, and nondominated sorting genetic algorithms II (NSGA-II). Experiments are conducted on an engine test rig, in which eight different engine operating conditions including one normal condition and seven fault conditions are simulated, to evaluate the presented feature extraction and selection scheme. In the phase of feature extraction, theStransform technique is firstly utilized to convert the engine vibration signals to time-frequency domain, which can provide richer information on engine operating conditions. Then a novel feature extraction technique, named two-dimensional nonnegative matrix factorization, is employed for characterizing the time-frequency representations. In the feature selection phase, a hybrid filter and wrapper scheme based on mutual information and NSGA-II is utilized to acquire a compact feature subset for engine fault diagnosis. Experimental results by adopted three different classifiers have demonstrated that the proposed feature extraction and selection scheme can achieve a very satisfying classification performance with fewer features for engine fault diagnosis.

Three-phase induction motors are extensively used in industrial processes due to their robustness, adaptability to different operating conditions, and low operation and maintenance costs. Induction motor fault diagnosis has received special attention from industry since it can reduce process losses and ensure the reliable operation of industrial systems. Therefore, this paper presents a study on the use of meta-heuristic tools in the diagnosis of bearing failures in induction motors. The extraction of the fault characteristics is performed based on mutual information measurements between the stator current signals in the time domain. Then, the Artificial Bee Colony algorithm is used to select the relevant mutual information values and optimize the pattern classifier input data. To evaluate the classification accuracy under various levels of failure severity, the performance of two different pattern classifiers was compared: The C4.5 decision tree and the multi-layer artificial perceptron neural networks. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Aiming at the local fault diagnosis of planetary gearbox gears, a feature extraction method based on improved dynamic time warping (IDTW) is proposed. As a calibration matching algorithm, the dynamic time warping method can detect the differences between a set of time-domain signals. This paper applies the method to fault diagnosis. The method is simpler and more intuitive than feature extraction methods in the frequency domain and the time-frequency domain, avoiding their limitations and disadvantages. Due to the shortcomings of complex calculation, singularity and poor robustness, the paper proposes an improved method. Finally, the method is verified by envelope spectral feature analysis and the local fault diagnosis of gears is realised.

Feature extraction is one of the most difficult aspects of mechanical fault diagnosis, and it is directly related to the accuracy of bearing fault diagnosis. In this study, improved permutation entropy (IPE) is defined as the feature for bearing fault diagnosis. In this method, ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), a self-adaptive time-frequency analysis method, is used to process the vibration signals, and a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) can thus be obtained. A feature extraction strategy based on statistical analysis is then presented for IPE, where the so-called optimal number of permutation entropy (PE) values used for an IPE is adaptively selected. The obtained IPE-based samples are then input to a support vector machine (SVM) model. Subsequently, a trained SVM can be constructed as the classifier for bearing fault diagnosis. Finally, experimental vibration signals are applied to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, and the results show that the proposed method can effectively and accurately diagnose bearing faults, such as inner race faults, outer race faults, and ball faults.

SAR based ship detection and classification are important elements of maritime monitoring applications. Recently, high-resolution SAR data have opened new possibilities to researchers for achieving improved classification results. In this work, a hierarchical vessel classification procedure is presented based on a robust feature extraction and selection scheme that utilizes scale, shape and texture features in a hierarchical way. Initially, different types of feature extraction algorithms are implemented in order to form the utilized feature pool, able to represent the structure, material, orientation and other vessel type characteristics. A two-stage hierarchical feature selection algorithm is utilized next in order to be able to discriminate effectively civilian vessels into three distinct types, in COSMO-SkyMed SAR images: cargos, small ships and tankers. In our analysis, scale and shape features are utilized in order to discriminate smaller types of vessels present in the available SAR data, or shape specific vessels. Then, the most informative texture and intensity features are incorporated in order to be able to better distinguish the civilian types with high accuracy. A feature selection procedure that utilizes heuristic measures based on features’ statistical characteristics, followed by an exhaustive research with feature sets formed by the most qualified features is carried out, in order to discriminate the most appropriate combination of features for the final classification. In our analysis, five COSMO-SkyMed SAR data with 2.2m x 2.2m resolution were used to analyse the detailed characteristics of these types of ships. A total of 111 ships with available AIS data were used in the classification process. The experimental results show that this method has good performance in ship classification, with an overall accuracy reaching 83%. Further investigation of additional features and proper feature selection is currently in progress.

Auralization is a suitable method for subjective noise evaluation of virtual prototypes. A basic requirement is the accurate modelling of the sound sources. This includes a dynamic and parametric description at multiple operating conditions. In the case of wave propagation including flow, such as aircraft or vehicle noise, aeroacoustics or fluid dynamics simulations are practically limited to the acoustic near field due to high computational costs. Especially challenging are simulations of rotating systems, such as fan noise radiation. For better applicability, the proposed method is based on in-situ recordings of flyovers. The processing chain compensates for source position and movement as well as atmospheric and soil damping effects on recorded data. The compensated source signal is decomposed into partial sources in spectro-temporal domain with nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) and can optionally be enhanced by physically-based source information. The format of the source model obtained is ready to use for dynamic sound synthesis in real-time virtual reality applications.
