Background. Developing countries like Ethiopia contributed highest level of maternal mortality due to obstetric complications. Women awareness of obstetric danger sign to recognize complications to seek medical care early is the first intervention in an effort to decrease maternal death.Objective. To assess knowledge about danger signs of obstetric complications and associated factors among postnatal mothers at Mechekel district health centers, East Gojjam zone, Northwest Ethiopia, 2014.Methods. An institution based cross-sectional study was conducted from August to October, 2014, in Mechekel district health centers. Systematic random sampling was used to select four hundred eleven study participants. A pretested structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were entered to Epi Info version 3.5.3 and exported to SPSS 20.0 for further analysis. Descriptive and summary statistics were done. Logistic regression analyses were used to see the association of different variables. Odds ratios and 95% confidence interval were computed to determine the presence and strength of association.Results. According to this study, 55.1% participants were knowledgeable about danger signs of obstetric complications. Maternal and husband educational level ((AOR = 1.977, 95% CI: 1.052, 3.716) and (AOR = 3.163, 95% CI: 1.860, 5.3770), resp.), family monthly income ≥ 1500 (AOR = 2.954, 95% CI: 1.289, 6.770), being multipara (AOR = 7.463, 95% CI: 1.301, 12.800), ANC follow-up during last pregnancy (AOR = 2.184, 95% CI: 1.137, 4.196), and place of last delivery (AOR = 1.955, 95% CI: 1.214, 3.150) were variables found to be significantly associated with women’s knowledge on danger signs of obstetric complications.Conclusion. Significant proportion of respondents were not knowledgeable about obstetric danger signs and factors like educational status, place of last delivery, and antenatal follow-up were found to be associated.

Background Globally, nearly half of all under-five deaths occur during the neonatal period. About two million dies within the first week, of which 75% come from low-resource countries, such as Rwanda. Many neonatal deaths are preventable or avoidable if parents are knowledgeable of Neonatal Danger Signs (NDS), and do not delay seeking care at a health facility. Objective To assess the parents’ knowledge of NDS and associated factors within the neonatal period at four health centers in Kigali. Method This study was a descriptive cross-sectional design. A proportionate stratified probability sampling strategy was used to select 209 parents who attended selected health centers in Kigali. Data analysis used descriptive and inferential statistics. Results The findings showed that 67% of participants had some information on NDS. Logistic regression showed that educational level, parity, number of antenatal visits, and information from healthcare providers was significantly associated with parents' knowledge of NDS. Conclusion Our findings indicate the need to enhance education of parents’ knowledge of NDS in the study population. Educational efforts also should target NDS in health centers where most Rwandan women attend antenatal care. Rwanda J Med Health Sci 2020;3(2):128-138

Abstract Background: Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin essential for the proper functioning of the immune system. It fondes both animal and plant sources in the form of retinol from animal sources or beta-carotene from plant source foods. Due to increased nutrient need and the severity of the potential health consequences are associated with vitamin A deficiency (VAD), preschool children and pregnant women are considered as the most at risk segments of the community. Hence, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of VAD and associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in Dera woreda, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods: Community based quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among children aged 6-59 months in Dera woreda from December 1/2018 to January 1/2019. Multistage random sampling was used to select the required samples (267). Data were coded and entered into Epi-data version 3.1 and exported to SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 20 for analysis. Binary logistic regression was fitted. Both bivariable and multivariable analyses were used to identify factors associated with VAD. Those variables that were showed significant association in multivariable association at P value less than 0.05 declared as statistically significant factors of VAD among children age 6-59 months. Results: Two hundred sixty seven mother-children Pairs were included in the study making a response rate of 94.7%. The overall prevalence of Vitamin A deficiency among children age 6-59 months was 7.8% (95% CI (4.7, 11.3). Antenatal care follow up (AOR: 0.446,95 % CI (0.155, 0.980)); birth interval within 2 year (AOR: 0.392, 95 % CI (0.107, 0.839)), and age group of24-35 months (AOR; 1.206, 95 % CI (1.037, 6.129)) were significantly associated with vitamin-A deficiency. Conclusion: The overall prevalence of vitamin A deficiency in this study was found to be lower than the national and regional prevalence. According to this study, VAD is a mild public health problem. Age of children, birth interval, ANC follow up, remain the most important associated factors for vitamin A deficiency. Therefore to decrease the prevalence of VAD, ANC service should be strengthened and we should focus on older children birth interval and age- based food needs.

Vitamin A contains breast milk after the post-weaning period and their increased nutrient demand of children from 6-59 months, they are considered highly affected segments of the community. Hence, study assesses vitamin A deficiency and associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in Dera district, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods: Cross-sectional study design was conducted via multistage sampling techniques. Data were coded and entered into Epi-data version 3.1 and exported to Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 for analysis. The bivariate and multiple variable logistic regression analyses were fitted. Results: Total response rate 94.7%. Prevalence of vitamin A deficiency among children age from 6-59 months was 7.8% (95% CI: 4.7, 11.3). Anti natal care (ANC) follow-up (AOR =0.446:95 % CI; 0.155, 0.980), and birth interval (AOR= 0.392: 95 % CI; 0.107, 0.839), reduces the odds of developing vitamin A deficiency; whereas age group of 36–47 months (AOR= 1.911: 95 % CI; 1.305, 11.969) increases the odds of its deficiency. Conclusion: Age of children, birth interval, ANC follow-up, Post natal care (PNC) follow-up, and place of residence were associated factors for vitamin A deficiency. Therefore more efforts should be encouraged to produce and purchase a variety of foods rich in vitamin A.

Abstract Background: Danger signs in the neonatal period are non-specific and could be a manifestation of almost any newborn disease. Early recognition of these signs by mothers is a pre-request for increasing neonatal care-seeking behavior. There four this study aimed to assess knowledge of neonatal danger signs and associated factors among mothers who gave birth at home and health institutions in Meicha District, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods: A community based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among Home and Health institutions delivered mothers two months before the survey. A simple random sampling method was used to select the participants. Data was collected by face to face interviews of mothers. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify associated factors. The odds ratio with 95% CI was computed to assess the strength of the associations. Result: A total of 650 (325 health institution delivered and 325 home delivered) mothers were interviewed. Among this, 50.7% (AOR=2.19, 95%, CI (1.594-3.003)) of the mother were knowledge of neonatal danger sign in the district. Mother knowledge of neonatal danger sign was higher among mothers who give birth health institution (60.1%) than home (41.1%). Age of the mother (AOR:3.99, 95% CI:(1.45-11.03)), age of new born (AOR:0.53, 95% CI:(0.36-0.78)), parity (AOR:1.27, 95% CI:(1.37-5.31)), postnatal care attendance (AOR=2.42,95% CI: (1.47, 3.96)), distance of health center (AOR:0.46,95% CI:(0.27,0.78)) were significantly associated with overall mother’s knowledge of neonatal danger sign. Whereas, residence (AOR: 3.09, 95% CI:(1.44, 6.64)) and occupational status of husband (AOR:0.23, 95% CI:(0.201,0.67)) were significantly associated with health institution delivered mother. Age of new born (AOR: 0.50, 95% CI:(0.28,0.896)), parity(AOR: 0.29, 95% CI:(0.113,0.74)), antenatal care (AOR: 12.04, 95% CI: (5.9,24.65)) and postnatal care attendance (AOR:0.27,95% CI:(0.138,0.51)) was significantly associated with home delivered mother. Conclusion: The overall mother’s knowledge of neonatal danger signs was low. However, health institutions delivered mother more knowledge about danger signs than home-delivered mothers. Therefore, it is better if the district Health Office should investigate the implementation of educational programs in the community and strengthen the health extension program.

Abstract Background: Globally, khat chewing practice becoming an alarming and common among the youth generation especially in higher educational institutions. It may also leads to frequent misbehavior, poor academic performance and memory impairment among students. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of khat chewing and associated factors among medical students in University of Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia, 2019.Method: An institution-based cross-sectional study was employed on 422 medical students. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS 20 software. Stratified followed by random sampling was employed to select the samples. Multivariable logistic regression model was fitted to identify the predictors. P ≤ 0.05 was used to select statistically significant factors.Result: The current prevalence of khat chewing among medical students was 21.5%. The odds of khat chewing was higher among males [AOR=3.353; 95%CI (1.460-7.701)], Muslims [AOR=6.390; 95%CI (1.903-21.460)], fifth and six year students [AOR= 3.391; 95%CI (1.354-8.488)], smokers [AOR=5.081; 95%CI (1.898-13.601)], alcohol users [AOR=4.872; 95%CI (2.094-11.332)], students who had khat chewer close friends [AOR=30.645; 95%CI (12.261-76.589)].Conclusion: Since a significant proportion of students chew khat, continuous awareness creation on the impact of khat chewing and counseling services are recommended.

Background. Vaccine- preventable diseases constitute a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children under-5 years of age in Ethiopia and other developing countries. There are limited studies conducted on this aspect in Ethiopia especially in Gozamen district. Objectives. To assess missed opportunity for routine immunization and its associated factors among children aged <24 months in Gozamen district health centers. Methods. Institutional based cross-sectional study exit interview was conducted on 422 mothers with under 2 years old children. Data was collected using the standard World Health Organization’s missed opportunity tool. Vaccines examined in this study were BCG, OPV0, OPV1, PCV1, rota 1, penta valant 1, OPV2, PCV2, rota2, pentavalant 2, OPV3, PCV3, IPV, pentavalant 3, and measles vaccine. The vaccination status of the children was assessed by a structured questionnaire based on vaccination cards or mothers/caregiver verbal responses. Binary and multivariable logistic regression analysis were used to identify factors associated with missed opportunities for routine immunization among children aged <24 months. Result. The prevalence of missed opportunity for this study was 74.9% ; major vaccines with high missed opportunity were OPV0 (67.8), BCG (17.3%), and Measles (14%). Home delivery, lack of vaccination center near the village, unable to attend formal education and younger age (0-12 months) were independently associated with missed opportunity for routine immunization. Conclusion. The prevalence of missed opportunities for routine immunization in Gozamen district health centers was high. Health centers should give routine immunization services regularly.
