Fluorescent or metal halide lamps are widely used in therapeutic applications in dermatological diseases, with broadband or narrow band emission UVA/UVA1 (320–400 nm) obtained with suitable passive filters. Recently, it has been possible for us to use a new machine provided with solid state source emitting pulsed monochromatic UVA1 355 nm. In order to evaluate the effects of this emission on immunocells of the skin, human skin samples were irradiated with monochromatic 355 nm UVA1 with different energetic fluences and after irradiation Langerhans cells were labeled with CD1a antibodies. The immunohistochemical identification of these cells permitted evaluating their modifications in terms of density into the skin. Obtained results are promising for therapeutical applications, also considering that a monochromatic radiation minimizes thermic load and DNA damage in the skin tissues.

Lanthanum magnesium hexaaluminate (LaMgAl11O19, LMA) has attracted much interest as its widely used in solid state lasers, TV phosphors and fluorescent lamps. In this paper, LaMgAl11O19 ceramic was pressureless sintered at 1650 °C for 10 h in air atmosphere using LaMgAl11O19 powders prepared by solid-state reaction at 1500 °C for 4 h. The result indicated that the synthesis temperature of LaMgAl11O19 powders was about 1500 °C. The LMA ceramic sample was dense and had a microstructure of platelet-like gains. The excitation spectrum shows two wide bands with the peaks at about 254 nm and 265 nm by monitoring the strongest 362 nm emission, and the emission spectra is consisted of a broad band emission with their peaks near 362 nm with a half-width about 5 nm exciting with 265 nm wavelength.

In this paper, a Re(I) complex [Re(CO)3(E2)Cl], where E2 = 2-(naphthalen-2-yl)-1-phenyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline(E2), was synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR successfully. Experimental data confirm that Re(I) complex [Re(CO)3(E2)Cl] is high-energy-emitting one. The broad band emission upon excitation at λ = 400 nm with the emission maximum locates at λ = 581 nm in solid state and 614nm in CH2Cl2 solution were observed.

The 6 GHz transitions of the 2π3/2, J = 5/2 excited state of OH are present in emission in the direction of several OH-emission regions (Rickard et al. 1975; Knowles et al. 1976), and in absorption in compact thermal sources (Gardner and Whiteoak 1975). This has suggested that transitions in the next highest state near 13 GHz (J = 7/2) might also be widely observable. A single detection has already been reported in W3OH by Turner et al. (1970). In this paper we report the observation of narrow-band emission in several other sources.

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are prevalent, potent carcinogens, and 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) is a model PAH widely used to study tumorigenesis. Mice lacking Langerhans cells (LCs), a signatory epidermal dendritic cell (DC), are protected from cutaneous chemical carcinogenesis, independent of T cell immunity. Investigation of the underlying mechanism revealed that LC-deficient skin was relatively resistant to DMBA-induced DNA damage. LCs efficiently metabolized DMBA to DMBA-trans-3,4-diol, an intermediate proximal to oncogenic Hras mutation, and DMBA-treated LC-deficient skin contained significantly fewer Hras mutations. Moreover, DMBA-trans-3,4-diol application bypassed tumor resistance in LC-deficient mice. Additionally, the genotoxic impact of DMBA on human keratinocytes was significantly increased by prior incubation with human-derived LC. Thus, tissue-associated DC can enhance chemical carcinogenesis via PAH metabolism, highlighting the complex relation between immune cells and carcinogenesis.

We present a 67-orbit HST/WFPC2 exposure on the weak radio galaxy 53W002 at z=2.390 and its surrounding cluster. Color Plate 1 shows 12 orbits in IF814W & VF606W, and 24 in BF450W. Potential cluster members were identified through 15 orbits in F410M, optimized for narrow-band searches for compact Lyα objects at z≃2.4 (P96), and confirmed through spectroscopy (W91, P96); 16 candidates were found with significant narrow-band emission in F410M: 4 out of 5 had a confirming MMT spectroscopic redshift at z≃2.40 (P96). All are located within 60″ from 53W002, or ∼ 0.24h–1100 Mpc (qo=0.5) at z ≃2.4, the physical scale of a group or small galaxy cluster. One object contains a weak (variable) AGN, another is a merger with two companions. Their underlying young stellar population is very compact, with rh.l. ≃0.2″ (≃ 0.8h–1100 kpc), and considerably fainter than the L∗-value at z∼2.4, implying sub-galactic sized objects. These results may explain why ground-based Lya searches for PG's have been largely unsuccessful. The narrow-line galaxy 53W002 was imaged in the PC at ∼0.07″ FWHM (WK95, see also W94). Its AGN component is ≤ 20±4% of the total continuum, surrounded by an extended r1/4-envelope with rh.l. ≃1.1″ (4.3 kpc), and has an SED of ∼0.3 Gyr in the center to ∼0.5-1.0 Gyr at ∼4 kpc. A one-sided cloud is seen ∼1.8 kpc West, ∼0.3 mag bluer than the SED, aligned with the radio source and its Ly-α cloud, presumably weak scattered AGN light, and/or jet-induced star-formation.
